She was the Boss of the FIRST. DUNGEON. WTH is wrong with me?!
I knew I had to take her down with the Crossblades and some bombs, but MY GOD...! I kept on getting hit by her fire breath, her atomic drops or simply when she would swing her claws! Imagine fighting Gohma a dozen times! This is embarrassing! So that means I will beat it on my first try with no issues right.
Either that, or it will confound you as much as me, forcing you to lower your review score to an unprecedented 9.2 ! ! !
That's the score he gave Tenchu Shadow Assasins.
They give you the ability to see into the Shadow Realm; With that ability you need to go and hunt down Shadow Lurkers to break the curse, freeing them from captivity (getting them to move out of your way). The Shadow Lurkers are basically just big eyeballs, but in order to get THEM to appear you need to complete a specific challenge.
I've mentioned these before, but I just wanted to reiterate because I am finding them more and more enjoyable as I discover more of them. They are similar to Devil May Cry's secret areas, but these are tasks you MUST complete to progress. This morning I've done two: One involved me killing Five enemies using the Block/Counter Attack move ONLY. The other had me use the environment to kill 30 foes. (Throw cars at them.)
I enjoy these things for two reasons: One, these arena-like challenges throw sooo many enemies at once at you sometimes, you just HAVE to think to yourself: "Jeez! If I was some blonde headed elf-boy with just a fairy and a sword right about now, I'd be crapping in my green leotards and running in the opposite direction!"
Translation: You fight A LOT of guys at once sometimes and it's cool!
Two, These challenges REALLY get you to learn your Combos, Counters and Additional Moves, other than just your Square, Square, Square combos most games of this type have you rely on! This game neither has the overly simply Lock-On and Attack structure of Zelda, nor the overly complicated Combo Strings of DMC or even God of War. It sits VERY comfortably in the middle. It's totally learn-able, a lot of fun and the game introduces them to you gradually, reinforcing them individually in challenges like those mentioned above.
The developers of this game have Pacing and The Introduction of New Concepts in Digestible Chunks down to a Perfected Art Form here! AWESOME!
Edit: Oops! I did play through a third challenge before and it slipped my mind. In that one, you had to use your Chaos form to kill 30 enemies within a time limit. Awesome fun!
The final of the four challenges to free this particular gate was to DEFEND 6 Enemies from oncoming waves of other enemies. That was completely unexpected, but falls in line with the rest of the diversity of this game, and again was tons of fun!
=
(Notice how you have Four Separate Tabs in Darksiders for collectibles, weapons, etc. Look familar?)
...but then I got past it and was introduced to one of my favorite Characters in any game in a loooong time:
You were sent by Samael to take care of him, which I thought meant to kill him, but instead you end up fighting against Angels WITH him...
You and Ulthane run through an abandoned city, trying to find a subway entrance as Angels flock all around you. The game actually KEEPS SCORE of who's killed more angels, you or him! FUCKIN' AWESOME!
You just HAVE TO love this guy! He tosses you around like a rag-doll so you can lower bridges for him; He smashes through "indestructible" ice-pillars with his hammer with ease, allowing you access to areas you couldn't reach... all the while crushing angels with his hammer, mockingly calling them all "Pigeons!"
Even better: as you are going through this sequence, IF you take down the right angel... He drops a G-U-N ! ! ! Yep, the game suddenly switches Gears (of War) on you and you enter a third person perspective shooter game mode ! ! !
Had I played this game a month ago, it would have been one of my GOTY. It just keeps getting better and better and better and better ! ! !

Spirit_of_87 said:Let me start off by saying that it doesn't help my view of this game that I started playing it after I finished Bayonetta. Also, I am sick of anything Zelda like. I love the series but, how many times can a I pull the freaking master sword and run through the same formula with minimal differences? Also, God of War was a good game but, I felt the combat was a bit dull particularly the finishing moves.
I am a huge Mad fan (never could spell his name right) and I absolutely loved his run on the X-Men but, his abitlity to consistantly miss deadlines was always annoying. Still, good things are worth waiting for. I agree that the game is virtually his comic book art in motion, most notably Battle Chasers, it's the only thing that keeps me from blowing my head off and trading in this game sooner than I would like too.
I find the game play completely uninspiring and it does borrow a lot from the God of War and Zelda franchises. A little bit too much for my liking. You see, I want entirely new experiences from my 10 hour plus games, simple because I have a short attention span and anything that doesn't catch my attention within the first 30 minutes is quickly dismissed. Did I really have to pull my freaking sword out of a freaking stone. That segment alone had me cringing at the thought of what the rest of the game had to offer.
Then I came across the first dungeon which, like the rest of the dudgeon's just seem to drag on a bit to long. The dudgeon's them selves are right out of the pages of the Zelda formula. Right down to the new weapon you get in each one. The controls are a bit to complex, mostly because of the button layout, which has you doing some pretty awkward button combinations. The combat is a bore, especially if you're coming off of something like Bayonetta. There simply isn't much to it and it's certainly not anything you haven't seen before. The problem with finishes is that they happen to often and they get stale quickly. It never changes and your moves are limited and are virtually the same for each weapon.
I could see why someone would like this game. Mostly fans of Zelda and God of War but, I don't think it's worth the time or money. I would say rent it unless, you are a big fan of this formula. As for me, I litteraly have to force myself to play this game. I want to finish it before No More Heroes 2 is released this month so I can trade it in.
phantom_leo said:For me, I haven't been able to finish a Zelda game since the 2D versions; I found the combat in the 3D games absolutely, mind-numbingly boring and tedious. Then again, games like Devil May Cry (and possibly Bayonetta, if I ever actually play it) go too over the top for me too. Darksiders sits squarely in the middle of those two games. Combat isn't at the forefront of gameplay, but it's fun enough for me to look forward to it. It's simple enough for me to "get" the combos, but it's more complex than Lock-On and then Swing, Stab or Jump at my target.
Did you get a secondary weapon? Like the Scythe? Adding it's moves to your Swords combos, since you can combo them together, makes fighting a lot more fun! It's flashy, you can juggle whole groups at once and you can send out vertical slices at your enemies in front of you while defending yourself from the rear with your sword. It adds totally new dimensions to your combat.
I hope you've played past the first dungeon. The set-pieces after that get to be very diverse and fun! I just finished a run through some city streets with Ulthane, Angels attacking all the while! Not only does the game keep a score of who's killed more angels, Not only does the game give you a Weapon Mod token for beating Ulthane's score --BUT-- that is the first segement in the game where you can pick up a GUN and go all Gears of War on the Angel's asses!
I would think, if you do indeed have a short attention span, you would appreciate Darksiders even more, as they introduce a new concept, or throw an unexpected gameplay mode at you every hour! I've played a bit of Zelda, a bit of CastleVania, a bit of God of War, A bit of Panzer Dragoon and a bit of Gears of War in the first 4 hours alone! I can't wait to see what the Hookshot brings or the Portal Gun does to the dungeons!
I'm the exact opposite of you when it comes to this game; I haven't been able to finish a Zelda game for years, so it makes me appreciate this game even more! I see the finishing moves differently also. You probably realize this already, but HOW you kill an enemy yields different results. Killing a Bat using the finishing move, yields more Life Pick-Ups for example. Killing the Bat by beating it to death with your combat moves, yields more Souls. If you want to play the game as an action game only, replenish your life. If you want to buy every Weapon and Every Sub-Weapon and all of their moves, earn more Souls. The weapon mods you can purchase add an RPG element to the game and will lend themselves to your playing styIe. Purchase a mod to refill your Rage meter gradually --OR-- Put the mod in your sword to release more Souls when an enemy is killed, for example. The choice is up to you and I VERY much appreciate that. I am at a section of the game where you are exploring submerged subway tunnels; there are insect-like creatures buzzing around ALL over the place in there. I find it INTENSELY gratifying to be able to nimbly leap into the air and rip their wings off with one motion, using one button, over and over again. It's satisfying and practical too as I seem to be burning through my life bar pretty quickly in there! Problem is, I'm not earning a lot of souls... Much like the rest of the game, I'm having a lot of fun doing it, either way!
I appreciate your differing opinion and, if anything, it makes me wonder how I am going to react to Bayonetta when I play it. If it TRULY is that much better than Darksiders, I should really enjoy it. I'll let you know when I get to it!
...I've made it past (what I hope will be the only) Water Temple equivalent in Darksiders.
By no means is it as complicated as Zelda's water dungeons. But MY GOD... it was sufficient enough and lengthy enough for me to have black spots in front of my eyes both last night and this morning as I played.
I'm both shaken and angry that this STILL affects me as much as it does, but proud of myself that I was able to endure it enough to get by this section and to NOT put me off the game entirely as it has done to sooo many other games in the past.
Thanks Pop! Just another friendly, random reminder that someone at some time hated my existence so much that he wanted me dead. Fuck You Very Much! It didn't stop me this time!
...I was awarded with a Firearm from Ulthane! Think Ebony or Ivory (if you prefer)... So far it is the most underwhelming of the secondary weapons, unless I am just using it wrong! I'll have to see if Vulgrim has any combos or move-sets available for it for sale and get back to you on that!
*Griever's Dungeon takes place around the Drowned Pass area in Submerged Subway tunnels. I know it was a proper dungeon as I received the Tremor Gauntlet Weapon/Tool during that section of the game, which, in turn, I used to defeat Griever. His (Her?) battle was far easier for me than Tiamat's and was able to be done without me dying once!
Presenting Griever's Heart to Samael gives you the ability to use Chrono-spheres. As the name suggests, these are spheres found in the environment that allow you to manipulate Time! (Which equates to you slowing time to solve puzzles!)
So many interesting concepts in this game. So. Much. Diversity.
I forgot about your water phobia. So I'm guessing you dont go swimming or bathe? In a bath I mean? What about sauna?
I can go in pools, but am not as anxious as others to do so.
It's usually games that give you some kind of air meter, where you could potentially drown, that sets off my phobia.
Weird thing is, War CAN'T drown. He has no air meter. He can stay underwater indefinitely. There's got to be something to the underwater "sound" that games make. The gurgling of bubbles, the rush of the water, the muffled noise. THAT seems to get me.
The more I am into a game, the more it seems to affect me. Last night especially, I was literally clutching my chest, worried I was going to faint. It almost turned into a full blown panic attack. I stepped away from the game, came here to post and then put it away for the night.
I was able to go back to it this morning, which almost never happens...
...guess I must really like this game...
...you think?
