LOL What the hell is point of renting Endless Ocean?

The main game lasted me 20 hrs and then I played for another 23 more.

He runs his wii through a HDTV too, so jag-city.

Jag city on whales.

Not a good combination.

Ya. I don't want to play EO because of that anymore. Hauling the Wii to any of the bedrooms that have CRTs is not practical.

He might as well buy Aquaria, it's only 10 hours long, has the HD graphics he likes and is multiregion. In fact you as a PS3 owner should have it too, while I suffer in silence Sad

Wat. Aquaria on PS3?

Yeah I know how people feel. Whenever I bring to the Wii to play on the HDTV I dont even feel like playing it because of the way the scaling makes everything look. I have so many games to complete but I put them off because I want to play them where they look good and not with jaggies and crap on the screen that shouldn't be there.

It's a pain but you really should keep the system hooked up to an SDTV, all the time really. So relegate it to the bedroom or ebay a cheap, half decent SDTV.

Now the only other option is to research the newer HDTVs which make a point of having uber scaling to upscale all SD content. Things like the Sony Bravia engine 3 or Toshiba's Resolution +.

I know from my Resolution + dvd player that it does indeed work. I want to know if there is any lag in gaming though as that is different to dvds. The problem is that you have to need or want a new TV.

I guess the new Bravia HDTVs would be the more reasonable option. I have more TV sets than I actually need, it's just that I have no space for one of them in the living room. I'll probably look for an HDTV upgrade this christmas, maybe by then there will be available a number of sets with decent upscaling options at reasonable prices. I want to pick up a 40" at least. Then again, i might be moving before year's end so I might as well wait until I see the size of the new house.

Yeah my lesson is learned. I got a 50" TV that never gets used for HD and every SD thing from dvd to tv to any SD console looks worse on it than a 14" portable.

Next time I'm going to do my research. Might even test some out in store and buy online.

GAF has a thread on this just today:

Similar problems.

World at War is done. Like I said before it got extremely repetitive by the end. The last two missions relied way to much on the invisible checkpoints that allow your men to move forward. There are just waves after waves of endless enemies unless you move up, or kill certain enemies, to be honest I have no idea what triggered the men to move on. The campaign is basically a rollercoaster FPS, its almost on-rails, the game always tells you exactly what you are supposed to do but you are going to see some amazing stuff as you play. CoD4's campaign was better due to it having some standout missions like the sniper mission. Based on single player alone this game is just ok, but no one buys CoD for single player.

I didn't go in depth with the online modes but what I saw was basically CoD4 in a WW2 setting. Where that game had helicopter strikes you can call in, WaW  allows you to call in dogs to attack. Tons of modes and a great leveling up system shows that the online mode is up there with CoD4. It also has the campaign co-op, one mode is competitive co-op where you can play a level and you earn points as you kill enemies and heal teamates. Only tried it for a short while but it was a blast. Then there is zombie mode, holy shit it's awesome. You are in a boarded up house and you need to keep the zombies away. As you kill them you earn points which you can use to buy weapons or access more areas of the house.

There is no denying that CoD WaW is all around an excellent game. It might not be CoD4 but its close to it. The campaign was fun even though it started to annoy me by the end. That said its still a game I would recommend to buy as it has so much quality content.

NEXT.

They had nothing so I rented Legends of Wrestlemania. I grew up on classic WWF so its pretty cool to play as all the old fighters. Sadly the game sucks, half the time its a QTE. It's cinematic, it looks like a wrestling match but it plays like ass. But hey, its got clips of old Wrestlemania's and you get to relive them so that is pretty cool.

I'm saying you should play your wii on an SDTV like I mentioned way back. Part of what makes Endless Ocean compelling is that it draws you into its world with the animation and visuals. But the naturalistic look is killed when your HDTV has bad scaling and starts adding jaggies to your scuba tank. The colour is dulled and things look far less sharp.

And Endless Ocean isn't the kind of game you rent. It's almost a pointless rental.

If you want a better looking game, get Aquaria. If you want a better GAME get Endless Ocean.

Yeah, invisible checkpoints. You can pick a great spot and kill bad guys endlessly and wonder why the game isn't progressing, merely spawning enemies at you. Until you work out that you just have to blindly run forward to an invisible trigger point. On rails.......... I sort of see what you are saying yeah. Hey, I bought COD for single player Nyaa And I will get COD4 for its single player too.

I liked the last level in particular. Gary Oldman as the russian guy was better than Kiefer IMO. Did the banzai attacks or grenades at the feet annoy you?

Don't blame my TV for Nintendo's stupidity in keeping the Wii non-HD compatiable. Nyaa

Grenades at the feet was so damn annoying. They came from everywhere, i swear some of the places the grenades landed were impossible for an enemy to throw at me, I bet they just randomly spawn near you. Banzai enemies were awesome, I usually knifed them as they came at me. The worse thing was spawning enemies behind me, what the hell. I clear a room, a turn around a corner and all of a sudden I get shot in the back by a guy that appeared out of nowhere.

Jack Bauer is always awesome, he is the reason we won WWII. (actually I agree with you, the russian dude was a better character).

I forgot to mention the other option, an external scaler, but those things are so damn expensive you might as well get a new TV that does it well.

IMO Nintendo should do a cheap external one, mass produce it, just to scale up the image for HDTVs. If you can buy cheap dvd players that have HD scalers built in then you should be able to do it for a reasonable cost.

What bothers me about grenades at the feet is that it's so cheap. You can be doing really well in a level and then get instant death. And it can happen again and again.

I didn't like the bit with the turret on the desert level where you are waiting for the air cover to show up. If feels like you are working towards this invisible trigger point waiting for the game to tell you it's over.

What is your favorite weapon? I always find myself using the MP40 in WWII games because it has most bullets and a bigger sight.

Have you completed it then? I was suprised that a genre I thought was played out could still be as entertaining as that. I loved it when you followed behind a tank and explosions were happening and then flamethrowers were being used.

I hate the level where you start in a field and advance gently upwards in japan. The enemy hides in bushes and then grenades your feet etc.

What is your next game?

Yeah I finished CoD5, its good, I just wish it tried to do more but then it wouldnt be CoD I guess.  My favorite weapon is that huge machine gun, its like a portable turret gun.

Read above and you can see what my next game was. I finished as much as I want to play on Legends of Wrestlemania yesterday. The gameplay is atrocious, the player hardly does much of anything. You have a punch move, a grapple move and a block/counter. Depending on the direction you press with the grapple move you will do one of a few different types of moves, this sometimes takes you into a QTE segment. Most of the time in the fight you are just watching the game do all the cool stuff you just press the button at the right time. All fighters play the same way, after 4 fights you have seen all the depth the game has to offer.

It's got a good wealth of modes, it has all the match types like steel cage, royal rumble, etc. The coolest thing is the recreate a classic fight mode where you get to see a clip of a Wrestlemania event and then you need to complete objectives during the match to replicate the true match. The career mode is nothing special basically create a fighter and then you fight 10 legends in a row in a survival type mode, there are different tiers of this. There is online as well but I can only imagine how boring the online fighting is.

Overall Score: 6.0

Yesterday I picked up Overlord 2, I am still in the tutorial like area.

I am enjoying my time with Overlord 2. Never played the first so I cant do that comparison. This game is basically Pikmin mixed with the action of Fable, it has that similar art style and overworld that Fable does. It's a simple hack n' slash mixed with little minions of different classes that you get to control. If you played Pikmin its EXACTLY the same controls. Except that you dont throw the minions, you lock on and they will charge and attack. Like Pikmin, each mission has you using the different types of minions to solve puzzles and navigate your way around the world. There is a whole upgrade system in place as well where you can buy new weapons or make your minions stronger. It's all good so far.

I need to reread the reviews to see why so many don't care for this game.

I rather play games that look modern, that look nice on my TV, that has modern features like an online community even if the game doesn't use it. Plus I dont want the easy handholding version which is what many claim Dark Legend to be. I rather play something that will give me a challenge. Also this game is no 6.

Last night while playing Overlord 2 I rode a large boat around this lake with many islands to dock at in an effort to find four keys to unlock a large gate. Later I had to infiltrate an empire castle with stealth minions ( you have a spell which turns you into a minion) in a sort of MGS segment. After that I had to cause complete carnage in some town. There is plenty of variety and the stealth mission in particular was awesome. I really like the game but there are some issues which clearly holds it back.

The camera does kind of suck, its not the worst I have seen but it gets in the way at times. The lock on mechanic of which is extremely important to every situation is a mess. Sometimes it locks on, sometimes it won't, many times it will choose a target you dont want. During the stealth mission I got lost and ended up glitching the game, my minions ended up floating in air and going through walls. The home base where you upgrade your overlord is a pain to navigate. To reach each upgrade menu you need to travel to a different section of the castle, which requires a long load screen, lots of walking and time wasting when all you needed was a damn menu screen. I dont want to upgrade cause it takes forever. Some side missions are super tedious like kill all 100 townfolk, there is no strategy to it, its just you running around a town slowly killing everyone you see. While the game is very similar to Pikmin the controls just aren't as tight, I can't manage my minions as well as my Pikmin.

Iread some of the reviews like the IGN one, basically that review focuses completely on the negative (and states that the original did things better which I can't comment on). if you only focus on that then yeah I can see this game getting 6's all over. I feel like there is a really fun game in there, I love the concept of a fanatsyaction adventureoriented Pikmin game, in fact I like it more than the concept of Pikmin itself. Sadly the execution is no where near as good.
