Blurb: Metroid™: Other M, the incredible new Metroid game developed for Wii through a collaboration by Nintendo and the world-renowned Team Ninja, launches June 27. The game looks at the classic franchise from a new perspective: While much of the game is reminiscent of 2-D side-scrollers, players can switch the perspective into 3-D at any time as they explore the twisting passages of a derelict space station and delve deep into a cinematic, never-before-told story of bounty hunter Samus Aran’s past. This new approach uses a new control scheme in which players use the Wii Remote™ controller held sideways to battle enemies and navigate the expansive, gorgeous environments in classic Metroid fashion, then aim at the screen with the Wii Remote pointer to blast foes in first-person and hunt the world for clues and hidden passages.

Erm, not sure about this game now.

So its like, retro, like New Super Metroid Wii.

Wii remote sideways action. The colour palette is all wrong for Samus, instead of gold/orange and red you get puke green/yellow. And it looks a little too retro.

Makes me wonder what Retro are doing.

Looks great to me, sure it needs more polish (or less actually, to look less clean) but that's how I'd imagine 3D Metroid to look if the Prime series never existed. We knew it's not Retro making it anyway. Gameplay sounds weird but if anyone can make that combination of retro and new work, it's Nintendo.

BUT scanning was also a mode of giving you the actual story, or the lore if you like in the Prime games.  personally i loved discovering the story myself by scanning the writings of the chozo and what not, rather than having it spoonfed through annoying cutscenes.  so it makes no sense to say no scanning because focus is on the story

Yeah, scanning worked for me. I hate long cutscenes. Plus they encourage exploration and make discovering the story an actual objective. Resident evil wouldn't have been as effective if they had cutscenes replacing all the notes and journals. But I think the scanning could have been more interestingly used.

I like the shot where samus looks kind of golden but don't like the bright yellow in the others. Gameplay looks interesting, they needed to try something other than first person. Hope the shifting works well. The environment looks pretty generic sci fi to me. Hope they have environments half as interesting as retro's.

I'd rather skip the scanning entirely.  It was neat in Prime and I liked how it showed the backstory of everything that you saw, but it got old after a while.  I think Metroid is in need of just a good old fashion traditional narrative.

Must be an old-timer thing, 'cause I hate all that scanning bullshit also.  I hated the voice memo's in Doom 3 and stupid Bioshock as well.

The first person stuff sounds like its going to be a casual fest. If you use the remote only it means you can't control your movement in the first person. So do we get on rails first person sections or just a static duck hunt style screen where a boss pops up?

Don't pay attention to GG about stuff regarding Metroid.

The bigger issue is the control scheme. Even the GBA Metroids used four buttons, how are we supposed to control it all with two. Tilt to aim upwards? A to go first person? + to switch to missiles?

They should have used nunchuck wiimote scheme. It opens up more buttons and you can aim while moving in both first and third person view.

You can't move while shooting in RE4/5 either... Wasn't a casual fest was it? Here it also takes you to first person to aim instead of just get the camera closer, since the normal camera isn't over the shoulder but somewhat like a 3D platformer instead. And yes the few buttons also trouble me but it's not like they didn't do this decision conciously. They could have easily made it use the nunchuck at all times and still keep the same basic gameplay, but they didn't, so I kinda have faith they got some good ideas for it... Dude knows what he's doing. Hopefully.

Maybe to switch to FPS view you don't even press a button but instead just aim the cursor on screen, and the view switches and actually first looks to the thing you first pointed at, and then you aim manually from there? Other than that, I get the feeling there might be some automation to the combat, it doesn't look like it's a pure side scroller or anything in those screens, but rather you can still move in 3D space with the d-pad (similar to the Galaxy side scrolling sections sort of, but with a far closer camera) maybe aiming is somewhat automated (you can see some shots don't actually line up with the gun and just move toward an enemy) and the challenge in the combat comes in different forms, perhaps Zelda-ish in that regard. Enemies come from all directions, not just left/right/up/down..

Anyway, pure speculation currently.

RE4 wasn't a side scroller though and it used an analogue stick and tons of buttons too. I get the feeling that most of the time the usefulness of the first person bits here will be predetermined. It'll be interesting to see how good the environments look if they are built for two perspectives too.

I'm certainly cautious on this one.

I like how sharp they are, I think they will look great in motion with all the specular mapping moving around with the lighting and super sharp 60 fps action shooting and grappling and kicking ass in all directions like Ninja Gaiden + Samus :-)

And don't forget, it has diverse environments as well going by the previous media:

And the lava, and the frozen stuff, the dynamic camera movements, etc. Watch the old trailer again, promising :-)

I trust Sakamoto...but very worried about Team Ninja.

There's no other game I'm more worried about than this one. But either way, whether it's a disappointment or turns out to be the best Metroid of all-time (which I don't see happening), I'm still getting it and happy it's finally coming out soon.

The game just sounds weird right now, to be honest. Is it 2.5D? 3D? A FPS? Both? All three? Like Super Paper Mario? 1up says you use one button to shoot and the other to jump. So is it dumbed down and shallow?

So far, a lot of the sites who wrote impressions seem positive. Yet, they do leave with a worried tone.

I can't wait for this game, but I hope it's good.

Also, those screenshots remind me of Trials HD's 2.5D plane. It's not fully side-scrolling but slightly tilted.

1up says the transition from 2D to 3D is smooth so can't wait to see actual videos soon.

Read all the impressions so far here is all the info I can gather so far:

Controls:

  • Controls with wiimote only, sideways for 2D, point at screen to enter 3D.
  • While in 2D, d-pad moves Samus around a 2.5D like world, I guess think Streets of Rage or something, you can move in and out of the screen. Sometimes you switch to where you are running into or out of the screen. In some small rooms it goes into a RE4 like over the camera view.
  • 1 button fires lasers, hold to charge. In 2D you auto-aim at anything in front of you. Just face your enemy and you will fire at it.
  • 2 button is jump, they say it feels very Super Metroid like. She moves very quickly. You can wall jump by simply jumping at a wall and then hitting jump over and over, no need to point at the other wall.
  • In 2D A button is morph ball, 1 becomes bombs (which are like Super Metroid, you may lay a ton of bombs at once as quickly as you like), hold 1 to use a super bomb, 2 jumps.
  • When you point at the screen you enter first person mode, you may move your guns reticule anywhere on the screen in a fixed postion. If you hold the B button then you can move your head around by moving the wiimote at the edges of the screen. You cannot move in first person.
  • In 1st person A is laser and B locks on to stuff, if its an enemy or door you fire a missile. If its an object you can scan it using B much like Metroid Prime
  • There is a new mode called concentration mode, hold the wiimote up toward the roof and press A. When you do this you refill your missles and gain some health if you were at critical, you gain a full tank.
  • Samus can dodge attacks by tapping the d-pad in any direction right as an attack is about to hit.
  • Samus can do up close attacks by getting up close and hitting A, this results in a cinematic kill.
Gameplay:
  • Very fast paced, moves like Super Metroid not slow like Prime.
  • There were missile upgrades and energy tanks hidden in the demo. Missile upgrades only give you 1 more missile.
  • Use first person to "explore", look around the areas for hidden paths and items. If you scan a room and it has a hidden item an icon will show up in your mini map that states an upgrade is in the room.
  • Enemies are more aggressive, usually coming in groups.
  • From the demo it seems like upgrades to Samus weapons come from orders from the commander, Adam, the same Adam that the computer was based on in Fusion. In the demo Adam authorizes the use of certain weapons in certain areas like the ice beam for a boss fight.
  • You can only fire missiles in 1st person view. There did seem to be slots for chosing different missiles or beams in 1st person view.
  • If you charge your beam and then enter ball mode you will drop 5 bombs in circle
  • There was a boss fight where Samus and some marines take on this purple thing with tentacles. You had to freeze the tentacles in 1st person then switch to 3rd person to run in and hit the eye of the monster
  • The area they played felt very old school Metroid like, lots of paths, platforms.
  • Doors dont need to be shot to open, the open doors open automatically.
  • Seems to be story driven, Samus talks to herself.
  • You can jump on enemies head to either shoot at them at close range or jump behind them.
  • After boss fight some areas that were previously locked were now opened.
  • The demo started with CG movie showing the final battle of Super Metroid.
Reaction
  • Seems to me that most impressions were positive
  • They all say it feels unlike anything they have played
  • It is awkward to go from 3rd to 1st person in the middle of battle, too much time to flip wiimote in your hand. Also not being able to move in 1st person was an issue.
  • Feels very Super Metroid like in 3rd person
  • Auto aim is not as bad as it sounds, seems like they upped the action to make it work
  • Voice acting could use some work
  • Jeff G. found that if he just tapped the d-pad during a boss fight rather than holding it down to move, Samus would dodge every attack.
  • All optimistic but want to see more.

I dont know what to think about Metroid, all impressions are positive but it sounds so weird. Auto aiming, no missiles in 2D, having your upgrades being activated by the story, 3rd to 1st person switching, it all sounds very un-Metroid like. We need a demo.
