It's to drive people crazy. 
I did a very hard shrine early on in the game, a 'medium test of strength' or whatever it was. It was very, very hard at the time. I guess that's what you get for 'exploring' 
I encountered the easy version of this a while later while actually following the path laid out by the game, and all of a sudden it all made sense. I wasn't supposed to have been able to penetrate that deep into hostile territory back then.

You can just quit shrines and come back later.

My percentage of completion was only 28.78%. Wow. I had found 137 seeds, done 86 shrines, had the whole map filled in, found the four Great Fairies, and got all the memories. So still quite a lot left to do obviously.

If that's on the border between a snowy area and a non-snowy area, it's part of a quest.

I heard/read someone say somewhere that Korok seeds figure greatly into the completion percentage... and there are supposedly 900 of the little things.

Yeah I saw that too. I can't believe that there's 900 of those things scattered around. I imagine that there are a bunch of other little things that add up too such as havining all armours max upgraded and having your album compendium filled out with pictures of everything.

Hardest shrine in the game. It's not that hard once you get it though. It's Zelda, don't over think it. Notice the available option s to you and the weird things against the wall, what are they used for.
Watched a video of someone beating this game in just a little over 47 minutes. Quite impressive.

I've gone in there twice. I don't get it. Only four balls. Markings on the wall, numbered lanterns? Then a big portrait with more constellations. Just wut?
Oh wait, that one was fairly easy.
