The greatest horror game franchise returns to it's roots with what seems to be another great entry. The action RE has been retired, RE7 takes the series back to the days of limited ammo and inventory, maze like locations and a focus on scares and atmosphere.  Much of the marketing and it's controversial change to first person made this seem like a clone of the hide and seek horror games that have been flooding the market, but that is not the case. This is clearly a Resident Evil game, there are guns, there are monsters, you will fight a lot.

Post impressions as you play, please mind the spoilers, tag them.

Here is the metacritic link for the reviews so far, sitting at an 86.

The start of this game is bonkers!  They hid it well, I was like what in the fuck shit!!! Ahhhhhhh!!! OMG!!! It totally takes inspiration from my favorite horror movie series Evil Dead. Right away the change in atmosphere is so telling of the kind of game this will be, it's creepy as hell and scary once again. But I feel I am playing a gimped version of it as it's so clearly made for VR, everything about that opening would have been better x10 if i was in the game, having that in my face, chills.

I only played a little of the first main section, in looking everywhere for herbs and bullets. This fucking asshole jack is chasing me, it's just like nemesis. I am defenseless right now so I have to hide and run so I am not to thrilled about that, can't wait to fight back. You have a block which negates some of the damage. Your character is slow, jack is faster which means running away can be problematic I feel you don't get a head start. It's hard as hell to get around him in the cramped hallways, for sure you will take damage unless you time your backing away right to avoid his attack then make a run past him. So there is some strategy to "dodging" but it's kind of crappy.

I am sure once I get strapped I will be fine. Feels like old RE!!!

OMG this is old RE!!!!!! I ran out of space in my inventory, I was passing so many things I wanted to grab and then boom a save room, YES!!! Still early on.

I have a bunch of ammo and healing items though, Im pretty sure this game will be easy on normal. No where near as tough as the older games which were pretty easy but they felt more dangerous than this game so far.

But man I am loving this, it's what the series needed.

Just finished the second boss, holy shit this game is amazing! This is nuts, we have classic old RE again in crazy modern first person view. I am just loving everything. The environment is super detailed, I love searching every nook and cranny. I love finding a key and running all the way back to that door I left locked way back when and finding a new weapon or stache of items. I love managing my ammo, weapons and space they way I used too.

So far the pacing has been fantastic. There is always something new every few minutes. Each area has its sort of theme and enemy type. There is just a great constant flow to the gameplay to keep things going. Boss battles have been awesome so far. I died one on each but the second time I came prepped and just wrecked them, shows how important item management is. The difficulty is at a great spot on normal, every time I feel I have a bunch of ammo and health there is some tough moment that drains me of my items only to have me build it up again. But I am reaching the point where I have so much ammo my item box is getting used a lot to store them.

I hate hide and seek games so I was pleasantly surprised at how sparingly that whole mechanic has been used. And really with Jack I just ran, never really had to hide. It feels more like a Nemesis chasing you than some dumb thing that is invincible and instant kills you.

I guess the cons is combat is really basic, again going back to the old games, its mostly about just having the right amount of ammo and unloading. Now here they do have weak points and stuff but its still more just doing damage and running to avoid damage than any action game strategy that occurred in the last three games. Puzzles have been mostly meh, way to many shadow ones.  And enemy types and the look of them has been a disappointment. The monsters are one of my favorite things about these games and this one doesn't really impress in that regard.

Still this is easily one of my favorite games this gen so far. Can't wait to play more tomorrow.

Great impressions and the game sounds amazing.Does the game deliver the type of gameplay of RE4 or slower pace?

Way slower pace than RE4.....I just took a break from it, started it a few hours ago. It totally has the pace of the older RE games but plays more like Silent Hills and Outlast with a better story. I'm really liking it so far. I'm at a point now where it seems like the gameplay might open up a bit more which has me intrigued. Controls are good, graphics are nice and sometimes looks really great, some really freaky moments too. It may disappoint you because it doesn't feel like the old RE games at all but then you'll be enjoying it so much you forget about it.

Ok so here are my full thoughts after one playthrough. The first half, maybe two thirds is an excellent return to form and almost everything I can hope for in a modern take of the old formula. It's creepy, the locations were beautifully design with incredible attention to detail. My favorite part was that I was back to managing items, ammo, health. Making decisions to go back into enemy invested areas to maybe look for a new weapon I might have missed and so on. The exploration mixed with the danger was working great.

It also had what I feel were very well done boss battles. People complain about not having damage indicators, old RE never had that and this game does a far better job of clearly marking weak points. They are fun and varied but at the same time show the limitations of the combat as it's not as good as any of the RE action games. Still the point is more about how well did you save your ammo so that these battles feel like a battle against survival more than a test of skill, which is how it was in the old days.

They nailed mostly all of it. Sure the puzzles could have been better, the locations a bit more complex and there absolutely should have been better enemy variety but hey baby steps.

Then came the final third and the game has a tonal shift and all of a sudden all that item management you did gets thrown out the window and now you are playing fake RE4. The problem with that is that the combat is ass compared to RE4. Now it's not fully RE4,
the ship is a creepy area with lots of secrets and ways to get ammo which I did. It's just way way too much ammo, I had so many bombs I could put bomb bomber man. The balance is totally thrown out of whack, if the anmo remains scarce that section could be brutal and extremely intense. Instead for me it was a shooting gallery against enemies that aren't that interesting. Maybe madhouse fixes this.
The final area is a big disappointment. Further continues the thread of abandoning what worked before.
Yes you get your items back but now you get all of Mia's stuff which I was like Rambo and there is so much ammo everywhere that even if I had no ammo saved up throughout the game I would have had enough to kill everything. Now yes by the end of every RE game I have enough ammo to kill a small country, but I feel I earned that through my playstyle. In this game I felt it's like "bah here you go, go nuts". Besides being a really bland area there wasn't much of anything interesting to do. It's just a series of battles with more and more molded ending in what is NOT a final boss. It's just an elaborate QTE.

That's the cardinal sin, a RE game without a final boss are you ducking kidding me?! The whole point of saving all that ammo all game long is so that I laugh as I absolutely destroy the final boss with all my super guns. But when you have no final boss it just feels like a waste.
So yeah the ending let me down and brought the experience down a few notches. Also there is the story which is just so poorly done. There was one moment toward the end where it showed some heart and I was like wow, where is the focus on that. RE has always been cheesy and melodramatic but they owned that with awesome characters. Ethan is boring as hell, I still don't get what his personality should be. The events of the game don't feel they have any gravitas to it. Whatever made the old games work so well with is b-movie energy was kind of missing here. But I don't play RE for story, still I am used to being super hyped up by the end of every game as the alarms are going off, the action music is pumping and you go battle that fucking asshole scientist/monster/sunglasses wearing douchebag.

So those are my thoughts for now. This is not a review yet, I have a lot more to play before I have a final opinion on this game as a whole. I just know it went from omg this is top third RE game to middle of the pack RE game for me by the end of it.

What's funny about this game is that it really didn't need to be a Resident Evil game at all...I mean they could have created a new IP and called it "The Hills of Silence" or some shit and the game would probably be generating even better word of mouth.

The Resident Evil brand still has a lot of goodwill attached to it. I think people genuinely want the series to be great again, and it looks like they got it. Plus, with a new movie coming out you want to get the name out there as much as possible. Rising Tides raise all boats, or whatever that cliché is.

No chance. If this was named something else it would get worse sales than The Evil Within. No one would pay attention. Because its RE its a major event title and already shipped 2.5 million and will probably ship 4 million by march. RE4 could have been a new IP but its far better being a RE game. The franchise deserives the best Capcom teams and the best production values for whatever horror ideas they have. As this game shows they can cover some pretty unique stuff in this universe.

But RE4 still used the same characters and storyline of the past games. This one does not...it really has zero in common with the past games other than healing herbs. I have more faith in new IP that they can actually do well with proper marketing. There was a time Resident Evil itself was a new IP.

It connects to the other games.

Half way through madhouse. It started off a lot worse than it became. Mia was hell for me, Jack a pain. But once I settled in and started to manage stuff well Its classic RE. I was hoping for a lot more remixing. There are a few awesome, oh what thats different moments, but so far its just a few random items in different spots. Almost none of the main stuff has changed, the structure is basically the same. A few more enemies here and there. I was hoping for a really big mix up, key items in different locations and stuff. Maybe do parts in a different order.

Still its a ton of fun. Definitely the more traditional RE approach. I am playing it like a new file, not using any of the unlockable stuff.

Seeing as the general consensus seems to be that the game is a return to classic RE feel, and it looks interesting from the game play I've viewed I really want to try this. Only one problem; in my old age I've become a cheap bastard who will only pay full retail for a game that I'll get my money's worth out of. 10 hours of play with limited replay value? That's a $20 game for me, so I'll wait for a sale or when it hits the bargain bin.

Do you valued  hard mode that remixes a few items and changes the enemy placement? If so you can get double the time out of it. I am already on my third run, put close to thirty hours into it. But I do that with most RE games, I like to master them.
