I should have the game finished up later today. I'm on the arson cases now. Right now I would describe the game as a very average story told by an excellent story teller who can almost make you ignore the faults and holes of the story.  I'll probably right up a review for it later. As I've said before I don't quite get why the game is getting as many high scores as its getting. I don't know if the reviewers are just completely ignorant of the adventure/mystery genre and think this was a landmark achievement or if they gave the game a bit of a pass because Rockstar's name was on it. It's still a very good game, but I can't honestly give it more than an 8. Maybe 8.5 if it ends strong.

I feel exactly the same ways, the 9s are way too generous. An 8 to mid 8 seems fine cause of how interesting the game is but there are so many flaws you can't be praising the game that much.

I think a lot of the reaction is like when you look at other technology jumps.

When the first "talkie" or color movie appeared, I'm sure it had some shitty things going on, but people where wowed enough by the technology to say 'great film'.

I guess you could look at the reaction Avatar (James Cameron) got.

Obviously I haven't played the game yet. Going by previous GTA games reviews on how the story was better than the Godfather and all this nonsense, the games media loves to overate games that makes gaming seem more grown up and movie like, as if it's the ultimate aspiration of games to be just like a movie.

It wouldn't be hard to beat The Godfather, though. They're probably right.

LA Noire's story is better than the Godfather? Maybe the Godfather video game.

Anyway I've finished the game, and I think I can best describe the story with a classic backhanded compliment.  It was "over-ambitious."  The story(s) was pretty good, but it just wasn't told well.  Originally I described the game as a bad story told by a great story teller, but I think I had that backwards. It was a good story told by a bad storyteller.... who compensated with good visuals.

I've tried to write this a few times without going into spoilers and it's more or less impossible so later I may write a blog to go into it further. I'll just say that stories of the individual chapters were fantastic at times. When the missions are taken as they are they can be fantastic, particularly the Vice and Arson cases. However as those missions are woven into the more complex overarching story it breaks down. A lot of climaxes to major plotlines end up taking a swerve as opposed to being resolved, and it felt like the easy way out.

As far as the people who are praising it, I think they just don't quite understand what a good story is. These are the people who think a story with a swerve or trick ending is instantly good just because they don't see it coming.

This. Yes the story itself could have been very satisfying and had strong impactful moments but the way its told stinks. The plot has sudden jumps and plot lines abruptly end plus there a few holes that never get addressed cause it seems they just want to move to the next gameplay section.

Okay so it's like The Godfather then. Good story, terrible telling of said story.
