Ask the AVERAGE gamer in this day and age, what's better:
- Call of Duty or Bayonetta?
- Halo: Reach or Super Mario Galaxy 2?
- Grand Theft Auto or GT5?
I think the answers you would get would be depressingly telling.
Well GTA is better than GT5...
I get your point. The western games are what is popular. That said you will get plenty of argument between Galaxy 2 and Halo, it will mostly depend entirely on the person you ask.
Its that Inafune talks a lot so it can feel like he represents all of Japan. I feel like those that think the Japanese market is failing or what not are trying to hard to be western rather than be themselfs. Look at Nintendo, they are confident, they are the most profitable company in the industry. Clearly the Japanese way of doing things still works.

Leo you underestimate the power of the Nintendo fan. You are asking the wrong crowd, a gaming forum will be more open to various experiences. Go to a college and ask the average 18-23 year old male.

They are not. Iwata, Miyamota, Sakamoto, Koizumi seems to be a merry band of fellows. Inafuna (or however it is spelled) and the emo squad do not speak for the whole industry.
P.S. Vader and Leo you forgot best shoot em up Sin and Punishment 2, best platformer

Shoot em up is a tiny little genre, of course a Japanese game will win that category, they are the only ones participating.

Same can be said about fighting games, 2d platformers on disc (actually that is only Nintendo) and anime rape sims.

True, shows that we need the Japanese for these genres. They are still very valuable. I don't know what is going on, there is some strange mentality going around that is trying to always distiguish a Japanese game from another kind of game. Back in the day there was no "its Japanese" there was no JRPG, it was only RPG. All games were just games, it didn't matter what country they came from.
I don't know what started the whole divide. If it was the mixing of PC and consoles, if it was the media, of it was the rise of the internet so now everyone has more information. All I know that as a kid, a game was a game. Now there are the popular games and the strange japanese games for weirdos, its like this market became a high school.
You just describe Gaming in its Infancy.
Now, its the Confused Teen looking for its Identity...
What kind of Adult will this Industry grow into?
Websites, Magazines, News Reports (Activision, MicroSoft) and the "Average" Gamer all seem to suggest Shooters are the BIggest thing,
Yet, Nintendo is on top this Generation...
Still, Japanese Developers aren't getting the $ they need to make the games they want anymore and are getting to be frustrated.
There's a Japanese Console in the lead, but all the money is going to and coming from Western Developed games...
How does this happen?
The reason why I think Kinect and Move won't catch on? Simply because Sony and MS is fighting for the Wii's market. I just don't see Wii-owners wanting to buy Move or Kinect when they already have the Wii.
As far as why Japan is trailing behind? I have no idea. Your guys' answers are as good as mine.
But Japanese developers trying to make shooters isn't the answer. Unless it's from a talented team like Mikami and Platinum since they know what they're doing. But for others like Tecmo with Qauntum Theory or Square-Enix making MindJack, those are just impending disasters.

Because the Wii isnt in the lead of the core market we are used to. The found a new audience and I believe they recaptured the children market. The market we are used to is cut mostly between PS3 and 360.
Question is then, What is Nintendo going to do to KEEP those kids they captured? Blindside them with a new technology?
...Or are they gonna "grow up" and get a PS3 or 360...?
It's gonna be interesting...
Nintendo was always good with reaching out to a younger generation. I'm still pretty amazed at how Pokemon, Mario Kart, and their party games still have insane success even though all the N64 and Gamecube kids are all grown up.
I don't know if they'll have the same success as the Wii but I think they'll be just fine because of the 3DS and the core Nintendo fans when there's a Wii2.
Also, I think Nintendo knows they're in for a challenge in the coming years. Seeing this past E3, looks like Ninty is pulling no punches and preparing for a possible change and a transition to the next gen.
I'm personally excited about the 3DS and the upcoming Nintendo future. I think we'll see new info on Wii2/Nintendo's next console soon.

They don't have to. New kids are coming along all the time. It's why Mario Kart gets on NPD. Every day a few more thosand kids get old enough to hold and use a DS.
Speaking of JRPGs, I am bummed out that we haven't seen many on consoles during this gen. Other than Square-Enix, it sucks to see them dying out. We're not even getting the Tales games anymore.
It's good to see Demon's Souls finding a market. I think JRPG developers have to think out of the box more like From Software did to reach out to the west. I'm not saying they should make more western-inspired RPGs like Demon's Souls or Project Dark, but I think they need to take more risks and do something different.
But I personally think it's not because JRPGs are becoming more niche or western gamers showing disinterest. Seeing the success of FFXIII and Demon's Souls, that proves to me that JRPGs are still relevant.
I know JRPGs will still be viable on handhelds and flourishing. But my worry is that more and more titles that I want to play will stay overseas and not get localized. I'm just very glad that a lot of them on the PSP and DS are coming over, but I don't know how long it's going to last. I'm just going to enjoy it while I can.

As of 9:30PM, the results of my poll (which is the biggest game) say the following:
Halo: Reach | 36% [37] |
Super Mario Galaxy 2 | 19% [20] |
Call of Duty: Black Ops | 13% [14] |
Gran Turismo 5 | 28% [29] |
Other | 4% [4] |

The Wii is pretty light on RPGS, as was the GC and Wii, but the 360 and PS3 have had a fair few... actually the PS3 has been a bit light this gen. I prefer hand-helds for RPGS, so I'm all good the PSP and DS have a bajillion RPGS on them. I was sad that Elder Scrolls never came to PSP though, I would have liked to have seen a WRPG on the PSP.
But anyway, my point is, I probably have something like 50-60 RPGs this gen, and that's pretty good.
Fixed.
