It was the director's cuts he didn't like I think.

Anyway Blade Runner:

Great atmosphere, cinematography, soundtrack, good performances of the main characters on the plus.

The minus side:
Terrible script mostly, terribly under-developed characters save a few, and very very poorly explored themes that could've been pretty interesting. Oh, and very very poorly developed plot.

It's like a 6-7/10 at the most. I still like it, it's just full of flaws that the atmosphere and Harrison Ford just barely make up for.

Oh, and the female replicant's piano playing is so horrible that when Ford says "you play wonderfully" or whatever it was made me lol way too much to take the scene that should've been poignant seriously.

I read he disagreed with ridley a lot, didn't like the idea of his character being a replicant,  thought the film should have more detective elements and possibly wanted his character to be more heroic. I'm going off of vague memory though.

Your criticism seems well thought out (what bugged you with the script and themes?) . Won't really argue about how you rate it. Unless you want to tell me that escape from new york is a nine - that would be funny.

I thought the dialogue was generally pretty bad, and really got in the way of a lot of the performances. Especially early on. That might be because they just copy and pasted the dialogue from the book which often doesn't work. But I've not read Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep so I don't know. It's worth noting that in A Scanner Darkly they had a lot of lines directly from the book and I didn't really have any problems with the dialogue in that.

Come to think of it those things do sound familiar, but I thought it might've just been with some of the latter cuts where it was more implied that he was or was likely a replicant. As for the themes I loved the ideas behind the themes, but to me they weren't very well explored at all. There were some good moments with both Ford's love interest and the main female replicant he was chasing (especially when she and the guy were with the person that designed them) from what I remember, but mostly it seemed to me it didn't really go into anything very deeply at all. I'm all for leaving things for the audience to think about, but if you are going to have the themes as a major part of the film you're going to have to have them be a bigger part than something lurking in the background, then vaguely explored on and off without cohesion.

That said they could easily have over done it too I suppose, but they didn't find the balance there for me at all.

In terms of entertainment hells yeah! Nyaa Evaluated under the same circumstances nope.

I really doubt they copy  pasted many lines from the book - the book is fairly different. And the sympathetic storyline for the replicants is totally the movie only. Although it's been a long time since I read it. The only dialogue I really thought was cringe worthy was the narration - rest seemed fine to me. Especially if they were going for a film noir detective thing. That could have been so bad.

You could look at the 'you play beautiful' thing as something that someone without a good ear for music and with his hands all over her would say.

Fair enough, one that sticks in the mind is when he's discussing the interview with whoever it was. (Right at the beginning.) That was technically really awful dialogue, and there was absolutely no way either Harrison Ford or the other guy could say it in way that didn't seem really awkward and unbelievable. Kinda hard to think specifics as I've not seen it for a few months.

The piano thing is just a hilarious bit of nitpicking. It's not really a big minus point against it. Just a humorous little aside.

But yeah, as I said I actually really like the film. I just don't think it's very successful.

Half-Life 2 I don't like however. Nyaa I wanted to. It tried so hard to be good and interesting, but unfortunately failed miserably. I need to re-review it with me talking only about HL2 so i can lower the score accordingly as the Episodes are actually pretty fun. Nyaa

Now I really don't know what you're talking about. The only line that I thought was lame was the "This is Zhora. She's trained for an off-world kick-murder squad. Talk about beauty and the beast,  she's both."   -ouch-  but considering it's a sci fi film from '82, I think it's pretty good.  Not like Star Wars when Harrison Ford said 'you can type this shit but you sure can't say it'

Bryant: There was an escape from the off-world colonies two weeks ago.
Six replicants, three male, three female. They slaughtered
twenty-three people and jumped a shuttle. An aerial patrol spotted the
ship off the coast. No crew, no sight of them. Three nights ago they
tried to break into Tyrell Corporation. One of them got fried running
through an electrical field. We lost the others. On the possibility
they might try to infiltrate his employees, I had Holden go over and
run Voight-Kampff tests on the new workers. Looks like he got himself
one.

Holden (video): So you look down you see a tortoise. It's crawling
toward you.

Leon (video): Tortoise, what's that?

Holden (video): Know what a turtle is?

Leon (video): Of course.

Holden (video): Same thing.

Leon (video): I've never seen a turtle.

Deckard: I don't get it. What do they risk coming back to earth for?
That's unusual. Why--what do they want from the Tyrell Corporation?

Bryant: Well you tell me pal, that's what you're here for.

Deckard: [funny look]. [pause] What's this?

Bryant: Nexus 6. Roy Batty. Incept date 2016. Combat model. Optimum
self-sufficiency. Probably the leader. This is Zhora. She's trained
for an off-world kick-murder squad. Talk about beauty and the beast,
she's both. The fourth skin job is Pris. A basic pleasure model. The
standard item for military clubs in the outer colonies. They were
designed to copy human beings in every way except their emotions. The
designers reckoned that after a few years they might develop their own
emotional responses. You know, hate, love, fear, envy. So they built
in a fail-safe device.

Deckard: Which is what?

Bryant: Four year life span.

Bryant: Now there's a Nexus 6 over at the Tyrell Corporation. I want
you to go put the machine on it.

Deckard: And if the machine doesn't work?
We could maybe start something with Shawshank(good movie) which I imagine you're mentioning since it is very carefully constructed. Might be too tidy for me,  everything nicely resolved and driven towards the ending. This might start to sound like a conversation I had with a studio musician,  listening to music with him dissecting it and pointing out all that was technically incorrect. Which I'm sure was true but something can be technically great and still be lacking.

Lol the script was definitely pretty awful at times in Star Wars but it was delivered in such a way that it was part of the charm for me.

Seeing it written down can you remember if it's from the book? It seems alright written down, but a whole lot of dialogue that I've seen in scripts seems terrible, but is really great in the film so I'm not too great at visualising that. (It's different with plays, though as the dialogue is used to set the scene so you get more of the effect of it when you're just reading it.)

As for The Shawshank Redemption it wasn't so much anything technical that bugged me about it, but rather I found it really overly-sentimental, and as a result it was extremely corny. But that made me like it, don't get me wrong. (And I know lots of people love it for the sentimentality so that's fair enough. Though I've not seen too many people who think it's corny.)

Okay I just checked youtube it's the video room scene that I'm thinking of. Bryant's fine in it. Ford on the other hand...:X The whole thing seems completely forced to me. "Well I don't get it, I don't get why they risk coming back to earth for, that's unusual, why, what do they want out of the Tyrell corporation?" Less like a lack of focus and confusion, and more like Ford has no interest in the scene, rather than Deckard has no interest in the case. (And at that point the strangeness of the case seems like it has actually piqued his curiosity a little.) I'll admit that the editing of the cutting from the television to Bryant to Deckard could definitely make Ford more awkward, though it doesn't make Bryant. (Hooray for using character and actor names! LOL ) Though Bryant is pretty much just staring with the one expression which is probably a bit easier to pull off. Nyaa
And I'm not someone who is big on technique unless it gets in the way of somehin. Guest House Paradiso is one of my favourite films of all time. Nyaa
Sorry about the typos that are no doubt here, but it's a bit hard to fix given that my typing continues off scren for some reason. LOL
