I did my first online mission today.  I was feeling pretty cocky since I had just graduated into the 2nd tier missions and had what I thought was a slick light bowgun and good armor.  I thought I was going to be the fucking man, and decided it was time to show off.

So after fooling around with everything for a few minutes I managed to get a group of 3 together and we chose a mission where you kill 4 Great Jaggis.  One guy dropped off so it was actually just me and this one other guy, and thank god he came along. He was a freaking badass.  Pretty much did the whole thing on his own.  I died one time and I don't think he ever came close.  He was just running around slashing shit up while I kind of just hung around with my pee-shooter.  It put things in perspective for me.

But it truly was awesome. Got to get Wii-Speak for it I think.  It wasn't necessary, but it would have helped. If you haven't gone online yet do it.  The loot was TREMENDOUS. Best stuff I'd gotten in the game so far. I'm going to get practicing a little more off line before I go back in though.

By the way, I took a screen shot of the first time I went online today!

Played a bit online for the first time, haven't put as much time as I'd like into it. Hunted Great Jaggi and Qurupeco with a couple other dudes, all using Great Swords, they went down pretty fast. Qurupeco barely even called for help, it does it more in the single player, then again attacks seemed to do more damage, and it was only 1 star mission. It was fun, smooth, no lag or anything else. Though I tried to do a third quest with the same group, to kill 4 Great Jaggi in one, and the thing disconnected. After we started it too, I probably cost them the quest if the problem was only on my end and they continued. Maybe not, the Great Jaggi hit harder than in single player but they were all decent and it didn't really hit them, I only got hit once myself in the first quest. Anyway, fun,  perhaps I'll play more online than I expected to, but I'll still put more time into the single player first, I'm only in the beginning, just captured a Qurupeco and moving on to a Barroth, though it kicked my ass once so I'll probably invest time in making a nice lance and/or new armor from other monsters first.  What a sweet, sweet, very unlike PSO game Nyaa

Did you see the other guys fighting phantom enemies which only they can see?

Nope, I saw them carve phantom bodies though. Then again bodies disappear after you carve them so maybe on their end they're still there so everyone can carve? I know everyone can carve boss bodies for their loot as if they played SP, but their bodies don't disappear. I've heard some people say it's intentional for minion enemies though, to keep bandwidth usage low and focused on the boss syncing, and that it even happens on the PSP games with local ad-hoc co-op. That said, if that's really the case, how the heck does it work if I see a small enemy attack another player on my end? Does he see it too? Do I see it go through him and he doesn't even know? I'm pretty sure at times we were fighting the same minions since I also did a quest to kill 8 small ones with another dude. Either way, if it does happen, I totally didn't notice it in the heat of the action with everyone trying to strike the bosses and not strike each other and avoid the minions to not waste time on them. Even had a Great Jaggi and Qurupeco in the same area once, when it finally called for help, and those two (bosses) were definitely synced.

So can you be hit by these enemies that other players see but you don't? Or can you join the attack on an enemy you can't see?

Like I said I didn't notice it happening so I can't tell you. I'm sure we fought and interracted with the same minions at parts, but if there were any de-synced then I didn't notice it. If it does happen then my guess is they can't attack players they're invisible to, that'd be pretty broken even if a small part, we'd probably have heard.

Had a 40-minute battle with the Quer...

Quap...

Queze...?

The big bird in Monster Hunter with swollen red balls for a chin!

I hunted and hunted. It called Great Jaggis at me. Those charging Rhino thingees. It lit my ass on fire; which was handily doused by rolling in water. It spit poison globs at me. I tried to pitfall trap it, got the Jaggi instead.

Sent it limping time after time. It made me faint once. It tried to recoup as I worked my way back towards where it was nesting.

Sent it running a few more times. Trapped it in the pitfall finally. Hacked it up but good! Got it to cry the Wyvern Tear. It was an upward swing of my Switch Axe in Axe form which finally connected, delivering the death-blow!

For a while my Switched-Sword just wasn't working! I don't know if it was because it had a fire-affinity and so did the bird, but FINALLY it went down!

I did that about 20-minutes before leaving my apartment this morning and it got me psyched for the rest of the day ahead of me!

Last night I finally did the solo Great Jaggi quest again. It was harder than I remember from the demo. Seems like there are a lot more of the smaller Jaggis running around. I made a huge mistake beforehand though. I thought I'd switch from the light bowgun to the medium bowgun.

In the demo that was the gun I usually used, but I hadn't touched it since I got the full game.  And I just wasn't used to it being so slow.  The light bowgun is weak, but you sacrifice nothing in mobility, speed, and manueverability.  Anyway, to make a long story short the Jaggi make fairly quick work of me.

It was a good death though.  It ended up inspiring me to go back to my light bowgun, and then start working on making some more exotic ammo.  That was the best move I could have made. I can't remember what it was called, but I ended up with a strong type of ammo that shoots out in a spray. The result was I was able to mow down the Great Jaggi and all his little bastard minions.

I wasn't completely satisfied with the victory though, so later this afternoon I'm going to go back and beat my time with him and get it down to a more respectable level.

You should try melee weapons as well, managing ammo can get too much later on, it's kind of advanced play, hence why the gunner's pouch inventory has 4 pages instead of 3 as it is for melee. And you can't use the spread ammo on bosses online if your teammates are melee. It may be more grindy as well, requiring you to scavenge for items much more than melee characters in order to make your ammo and later fancy types of it.

I just beat the Barroth in SP with a Great Sword after the third attempt. The first it owned me, the second I got a time over as I dodged too much and hit too little, and the third I did it in 40 minutes. Bitch. Now to farm it in even less time to make its armor, it has like +50% starting defence than my current upgraded Hunter's set.

I've experimented a little bit with a lance, sword, and a hammer.  The issue I've had is just trying to balance multiple suits of armor.

Woot, I haven't lost the touch this month or so I couldn't play. I just beat the Gigginox, first try ^_^

Man, I'm so behind. Thankfully I didn't notice any weird pixels so I guess they did replace my Wii.

No, they suck, just a black t-shirt with a bowgun dude on the front and a baseball hat with the logo.

I just beat the Rathian, it was way too easy, but I'm sure Rathalos won't disappoint when I get to it.

Next stop, the Lagiacrus!
