It's been about 5 and a half years since I did my last Top 100 list. Due to my OCD and compulsion to constantly create lists in my head I think it's time for an all new Top 100.

My first thought was to reevaluate the old top 100, but fuck it, it's easier to pick 100 new games that I didn't have on the list last time. In the past 5 and a half years I've played more than I usually have, largely due to COVID. And in that time I've played a lot of new great games.

Plus, when I made the last list, I avoided adding multiple games from the same franchises. So I can dip back into the Dragon Quest pool and a few others.

Anyway stay tuned. Starting tomorrow we're doing this shit again.

Now there’s a blast from the past. Really enjoyed Little Nemo on the NES. Yeah Capcom had a whole bunch of licensed games from back then that I really enjoyed. Another one was Mickey Mousecapades. I kind of miss those kind of games.

Mickey Mousecapades was one of those games that was far better than it needed to be. I remember a friend brought it over and I was set to dismiss it as the stupidest thing in the world, it turned out to be a lot of fun.

I think the only miss they had with all of the Disney games they made was Adventures in the Magic Kingdom. And really, I think the big crime there was they were too ambitious. They tried too many different things.

Another Capcom platformer I never played.

However, I did play my friend's copy of the other dream master game, though! Nyaa

Never played Nightmare on Elm Street. Though, I think it's kind of interesting to see that the Friday the 13th NES game has developed a cult following over the years. Whenever I scroll through twitch or tiktok, Will run across someone playing it. It doesn't look like fun at all, but there is a group of people who are into it for one reason or another.

It was certainly not fun.

My friend loved 80s horror movies and he played NES Friday the 13th and Nightmare a lot. Friday was the better game of the two.

Recently I stumbled across a guy speed running it; he beat it in just under 3 mintues:

Well thank you for sharing that video. Now I never have to play the game myself. Or watch anyone else ever play it. Or possibly think about it.

I really liked this game, not great but far better than Friday the 13th, just like the movies.

Little Nemo is awesome, quality platformers, one of the NESs best. Capcom was the next best thing to Nintendo.

Oh god! I vaguely remember what little I played of Nightmare On Elm Street but I distinctly recall playing Friday The 13th. Round and round I went from cabin to cabin. Don’t think I ever got anywhere in that game.

#61 - SaGa Scarlet Grace: Ambitions

saga.large.jpg

The SaGa series has always been a bit of a black sheep in the Squaresoft and Square-Enix catalog. And if you go by the games that were originally released in the west under the actual SaGa name, it makes sense. They're non-linear games, with weird leveling up, a little difficult to figure out, and some of them just straight up suck. So when Scarlet Grace came out I looked at the ass ugly art style I assumed it was another suck ass game and skipped it

I was wrong.

Scarlet Grace does kind of look like ass. I wasn't wrong about that. It was originally a mobile game so there was only so much horsepower they could put behind it. Plus, they artwork Tomomi Kobayashi, whose gorgeous watercolor drawings have been used as concept art for characters and settings, sadly don't quite translate well into 3D. But aesthetics aside, the game is excellent.

All the things that have been great about the series in the past are present in this game. There's an epic story, dozens of characters, and side quests up the wazoo. Plus they've added one of the most satisfying turn-based RPG combat systems I've ever played. It's a classic simple to learn difficult to master setup. Basically you try to attack in a manner that interrupts your enemies, and allow you to chain your teammates moves together. The game took me about 60 hours to finish and it wasn't until hour 50 that I really felt like I was out-thinking the enemies.

The game was just a great surprise all the way around. I picked it up because it was cheap and I had a little history with the series. Turned out, it was the second best in the series. That said, you'll find out what the best in the series is later on.
