To celebrate our 10 year anniversary I think it's only fair that we do the exact same thing every video game magazine did whenever they reached a milestone... create a top 100 list. So that's what I'm going to do. I've spent the last couple weeks thinking this over and I have a list in front of me that I'm pretty happy with. No one else on earth will be happy with it, but as I always say, "fuck off it's my list and I don't give two shits what you think you little pissant." At least I think I say that.

Also, if you recall I did do a top 28 list a while back. However, that was 5 years ago and many great games have come out since, so even that top 28 has some changes in it. There's a few new games, a few games my opinions have changed on, and there was one really great one that I completely overlooked somehow when I made the list the first time. So rest assured there will be some very noticeable changes.

And it's going to go by fast. Since I've got that new job starting in just over a week, my free time may be reduced, so I'm going to try to get all 100 games posted within the next two weeks. I need to sharpen up my writing since this is a PR job so it's good practice. Writing about insurance benefits and filing medical claims is just like video games right?

Yeah, yeah... I left in a sentence from the original draft of it and forgot to delete it. Oops.

#93. Bit.Trip Beat

Bit.Trip Beat can either be described as the ultimate evolution of Pong or simply Pong on acid with some really good music in the background. Tough to argue against either description. Basically it starts out as something very similar to Pong. A ball approches from the right side of the screen, and you line up your paddle to bounce it back. However it turns into something else quickly. The balls start to change and they approach with their own rhythm patterns, and when you bounce them back at the correct moment the noise it makes synches up with the game's soundtrack to create as it was intended to be heard. So basically it's a crazy music based rhythm game. And all the while the background starts flashing, with different shapes ranging from basic cubes to DNA double helixes floating in the background. Even with it's basic look and sound, it's a hell of an audio/visual experience. Despite the simple basic idea the game is tough as nails and probably could have been a touch easier. Oh and if you can, try and track down a Wii version of the game. It was since ported to the 3DS, iOS and PC, but none of them match using the Wiimote's motion control and tilt feature to move the game's paddle.

I bought this on Wii when it first released and loved it.  It was also pretty fun in multiplayer, as your unknowing friends would start off joking about pong, before getting all worked up over how psychadelic and hard it suddenly became.

I also bought Bit Trip Void, which had a great concept as well.  It's quite the pitty that the only Bit Trip games we get nowadays are nothing more than brainless endless runners.  It all started out so promisingly.

Totally agreed. On the whole I liked just about all of the games in the Bit.Trip series (never quite figured out how Core was supposed to play), until they got to the newer Runner games. The first Runner was pretty cool, but ever since they "leapt into the 3rd dimension" the games have not been fun at all. The devs can still make a fun simple game like Whoa Dave! but I guess the Runner games are still making money so they stick with them?

#92. We Ski & Snowboard

Screw Wii Fit. If someone needs an arguement about why we need the Balance Board back in our lives, We Ski & Snowboard is it. Gliding down a mountain peak at sunset, or just screwing around on some lower hills at night while fireworks are being shot off, there was no open-world game like this. It might have been hurt for the lack of any kind of story or major goals, but just exploring the mountains and discovering photography spots while pulling off tricks on my board was more than enough fun for me. And for an SD game, it really did a great job of capturing the motion and feel of skiing thanks to the balance board. If you were leaning just right your character would hit high speeds and you really did feel like you were there. On more than one occasion while I was a little too focused on the TV I would even get slightly motion sick (in a good way if it's possible to mean it in a good way) from playing. Sadly, until VR takes off (if it ever does), we're probably never going to have a game like this again and that's a damn shame.

#91. River City Ransom

Crappy box art is probably the only thing that could have held River City Ransom back from being one of the most popular NES games back in the day, and guess what? It kind of did. As a matter of fact, while I was aware of the game when it was first released, I wouldn't actually play it for another 10 or 15 years after it came out mainly because a lot of scenes were used in early internet memes and were constantly used for early videogame snark writer Seanbaby. It's a shame too because it's far better than its beat'em up contemporaries thanks to its system of leveling up your character's stats and being able to purchase new moves and fighting techniques. You could actually kind of argue that it's one of the first action RPGs because of that. It's even held up pretty well too and it's one of only a couple dozen NES games that I'd still quickly recommend. And if for some reason you haven't played it... well here's my recommendation. Go play it. It's great.

I really loved that game back in the day.

Two games I never played right there. Thought about nabbing Ski a few times but never did.

If you don't have a balance board don't bother. Then again, I think you can get them for like 10 bucks these days.

To be fair, the skiing at least works very well even without the balance board. And once again a game that is dear to me as well. I owned the original during the day's of the Wii and recently bought this sequel as well.
