Nintendo has announced that Punch Out is coming to the Wii on May 18th.

Not a lot of details have been announced aside from the date and this little blurb from a Nintendo rep:

"It will be interesting to see too how gamers react. I think they're going to react great to the motion control capabilities of the Wii with that game because you're used to hitting buttons and doing your blocks and your throws and kind of dodging out of the way, but now you can do all that with your own body, so it's going to feel you're right there as a boxer." - Charlie Scibetta, Senior Dir. of Corporate Communications, Nintendo of America

So it sounds like they're opting for more of a Wii Boxing style rather than the traditional controls from the NES and SNES.  I hope that they do a good job, as I was never 100% impressed with the boxing controls on Wii Sports.

Also the following boxers have been mentioned or shown in previews:

Glass Joe

Von Kaiser

King Hippo

Soda Popinski

No word has been mentioned if any new boxers are showing up, but I really hope so.  Half the fun of Punch-Out was seeing what insane boxer was next.  But if it's all the same let's just leave Don Flamenco retired.

Awesome memories indeed. I used to hang around for hours with two of my friends at the arcade playing only this game.

This game has challenges that make you want to replay the fighters over and over again.  For example, you have to knock out Von Kaiser with just five punches, or find five ways to get a star. Knock down Glass Joe three times and the let HIM win. So cool.  This will be played for a very long time. What was the final "secret"? Where's online? Sad

One more thing worth mentioning - Doc finally gives some decent advice!  It's not just "uppercut him when he's stunned" or "join the Nintendo Fun Club today."  His tips actually helped me stay competitive with Aran Ryan and showed me how to get a star out of Don Flamenco.

Not too me.  Punches seem to connect and it doesn't feel like you're just swinging a remote around to your arms get tired.  You can always use the old school controls.

There's a couple things I've discovered that I didn't see mentioned in the reviews.  Not sure if any of these would qualify as the big surprise but who knows.

1.  Unlockable headgear to make Mac more durable in the ring.

2.  "Man'ing up" - During a fight with Soda Popinski he knocked me down for what should have been the third time, but as Mac was falling backwards he shook off the punch and got some energy back (really wish I knew what the hell I did there).

3.  Mac's Last Stand Mode - This mode is available available after you've done your full title defense.  You basically go through everyone one more time and you can only lose 3 times before you are forced out of it. Plus once you're fighting you can't stop mid-match.  You cannot pause the game in this mode.  Very likely there's something special at the end of this. .  . like Donkey Kong.

That is what I was hoping for as well.
