But lately, I just can't get into console RPGs anymore and I've been craving to play more action-oriented games and FPSs.

What's happening to me?!

Am I growing up? Are my tastes changing? Am I becoming more casual?

Maybe, I guess so, and of course not.

I admit that it's been getting harder and harder to get into console RPGs lately. I picked up Dragon Age, Last Remnant, and got Fallout 3 GOTY Edition during the holiday period. I think these games are great, but I'm getting a little tired of committing to these games. I don't know what it is but for some reason, I just don't have the patience to play these for long periods of time anymore. I think I only played an hour of Dragon Age and didn't come back to it since. Same with Last Remnant. I only played the prologue and didn't care to continue.

I guess I've been bogged down by work, my personal life, family, stress, and most of all, time. I think that's it, time. Playing JRPGs or WRPGs are very time consuming. I don't want to think anymore. I don't feel like reading anymore. I'm getting sick of micro-managing items, building character relationships, or investing in hours upon hours in a narrative that may or may not hook me like it once did in the past. In other words, RPGs are feeling like a waste of time. It feels weird to finally come to grasp with this, that maybe, just maybe, I'm not into RPGs like I used to be.

But I still love handheld RPGs. I can still find time to enjoy those. But that's because they're convenient and comfortable to play. I can turn it on and off anytime, play in spurts, put it away, and come back to where I left off. I can play them on the toilet, on my bed during a sleepless night, on long car rides, on the job site, etc., etc. Yeah, I still love handheld RPGs, which is why the DS is, IMO, the best system for JRPGs.

But when it comes to console RPGs....*sigh*...I don't think I can take it anymore.

Instead, I see myself enjoying action oriented games or shooters like Modern Warfare 2, Bayonetta, Darksiders, Ghostbusters, Wet, Super Mario Galaxy, Call of Juarez Bound in Blood, and fighting games like Street Fighter IV or BlazBlue. I enjoy casual crap like puzzle games as well, although I don't know if Gyromancer or Might and Magic Clash of Heroes are casual.

Anyway, these games are fun, you can play in spurts, and you don't have to really commit to them or think when you play. They're just fun and stress relieving. These are the games I'm seeing myself enjoying more lately.

Maybe it's just a phase I'm going through, but I don't think it is. I'm not excited about FFXIII and don't care about Mass Effect 2. And I think this change can also apply to sandbox styled or open-world games, which is why I haven't picked up Ass Creed 2 yet. Some feel that open-world/sandbox games are stress relievers, but I feel that they're also time consuming and takes some commitment to play, which is basically how I feel about RPGs.

I'm just glad games like Bayonetta and Darksiders just came out. These games are really fun and although they're not as deep as RPGs, maybe that's just the type of gaming experience I need, which is, dumb mindless fun.

I have been playing action/adventure games since I was little, my tastes have not changed. Now it helps that they are the shorter games but overall I just never cared that much for RPGs.I do go through periods where all I want to play are classic games, or periods where I don't want to play anything at all. But my favorite genre will forever be my favorite genre, give me a good action/adventure game and I am happy.

With the exception of the two Golden Sun games (GBA), I don't play JRPGs. I can only stomach battling in those two games because the battles usually go quickly and there's usually no reason to grind. I HATE grinding. So EXTREMELY repetitive and it takes FOREVER to make any progress. I would probably give Pokemon another try if those games were anywhere near the top of my game wish list (but I hate grinding in those, too).

As far as JRPGs with less traditional battle systems go, I haven't really liked what I've tried of those, either (Star Ocean 3, Tales of Symphonia, FFIV, FFVII). I just dislike battles being cordoned off from the rest of the game world and then forcing me to do things with, usually (at least among the aforementioned games), some time limit or limit to the space I can use. It seems really contrived and restrictive. Random battles make this even worse, so I'm glad to hear that some/many modern JRPGs have ditched them.

My preferred type of RPG is of the western style, where I'm more free and there are more character- or conversation-influencing choices to make (Elder Scrolls, The Witcher). I guess it's kind of like a loose action/adventure game with item and stat management thrown in. I really like to explore, which, in my admittedly limited experience, WRPGs are better with... or at least the type I've become attached to.

So it's not like I don't do JRPGs because they're not pick-up-and-play enough to fit into my schedule... rather, it's because they're so boredom-inducing and frequently too repetitive for my liking (again, I admit my experience is rather limited).

time constraints mean that I can only play about 1 jrpg a year.  last year I played dragon quest IV on the DS and i thoroughly enjoyed it.

i really like mario rpgs or mario and luigi games, wish there were more of those

I used to be all about the RPGs.  In the 16 and 32/64 bit era I'd say about 75% of my gaming library was made up of RPGs in one format or another.  Two things sort of combined to kill most of my interest in the genre.  The first was EverQuest, which I felt few raised the bar by putting a great social feature into it.  The second was FFX which I consider to be one of the worst games I've ever played and is everything bad about jRPGs.

I stayed away from the genre for several years and now I pick one or two up a year.  Still fun, but it takes something extremely innovative to get me excited or it has to be a Dragon Quest game which for some reason strikes a great nostalgia chord with me every time.

My guess is you've tired on the genre as anyone will when they play one predominant type of game for so long. In another year or so you'll start seeing games that appeal to you again and you'll be excited to play them again.

Yeah, aside from the Dragon Quest and DS JRPGs (buying DS JRPGs has become a compulsive religious tradition for me now), I'm interested in Resonance of Fate and a couple of Wii RPGs like Sakura Wars and Fragile Dreams.

I'm not sure if these will be interesting enough for me to play them through, but they caught my interest.

I also picked up Star Ocean 4 Last Hope since it was cheap. Played it for like an hour. Can't play it anymore. Edge Maverick just isn't cool enough for me!

Game quality has increased greatly, so there are many temptations to drag you away from that 30-80 hour JRPG quest.  That's usually what gets to me, but after investing a tonne of time I stick with it (which is why I am judicious about choosing a JRPG to start with.

I think the key is to get a JRPG with perfect pacing and no frustrating bottlenecks where you are bored. Why do JRPGs have to be a zillion hours long for instance? Why not make them shorter and more cinematic.
