Hmm, I was hoping Super Mario Odyssey was going to be the killer app that would convince me to buy a Switch this year, but after watching a bunch of gameplay videos, I'm just not feeling it. It looks odd and kinda boring gameplay-wise. Oh well, I skipped NSMB 2 and Mario Maker for similar reasons. Hopefully, something else will strike my fancy later on in the system's life.
GT Sport is the game I'm most excited for. Hopefully, it actually comes out later this year.
Godamn, had some awesome Arms matches today.
I've been playing the Grand Prix, going up in difficulty one level and changing characters. When you hit level 3, suddenly the AI becomes much more aggresive. I'm eeking out battles and loving the challenge. I had a match where we had wild swings in momentum until the end we were just about dying each and I backed off into a corner to eek out the timer. So good
This game is so addictive, it has that Splatoon like one-more-time aspect about it. The gameplay feels so good, you just want to play because it's fun to do so. The extendable arms idea is kinda genius. That split second between your opponent throwing a punch and when it arrives at you gives you that half second to strategise your next move. I'm also getting used to the elemental aspect of things and the depth it adds to the game. With electricity you can disable their arms and go for throws. When an opponent is getting in your face, fire punches knock em off their feet, gives you a chance to regroup.
Each character has a speciality about them that fundamentally affects the way you play as them, so trying out different characters is a blast. And the more I play the better I get - yet the challenge gets greater too so your satisfaction when you win is enormous. I can avoid 70% of rushes now and I can spot when to throw, when to block and when to back off or push forward.
I love some of the stages too, the ones with special aspects or layout like the cars in a parking lot, or the stage where blocks appear from the ground. There's also this mario kart like aspect where random items drop in the arena and you have to move towards it to guard it from your opponent and what you and they do there is a choice that can win or lose batttles.
It's also going to be a complete blast in local multiplayer if you can afford 4 joycons.
This is an awesome new IP, I think it's better than Pikmin and Luigis Mansion.
Why not just wait for reviews?
EDIT:
Edge mag reviews
ARMS (Switch, Nintendo): 9
Dirt 4 (PS4/Xbox One, Codemasters): 7
Injustice 2 (PS4/Xbox One, Warner): 8
Tokyo 42 (Xbox One, Mode 7 Games): 7
Tekken 7 (PS4/Xbox One, Bandai Namco): 6
Polybius (PS4, Llamasoft): 9
Star Trek: Bridge Crew (PS4 PS VR, Ubisoft): 8
Farpoint (PS4, Sony): 7
A review wouldn't make the game look anymore fun to me. I'm sure it'll be a great game for most; it just doesn't appeal to me so far.
I've been replaying The Last of Us PS4 this weekend. Such a great game! Can't wait for TLOU 2.
This past weekend, I played a bit of Mario Kart 8 on the Switch. However, I played way more Uncharted 4 multiplayer, the game I just can't quit. I'm getting back into a groove usually getting first or second. I won't be home until next Saturday so I'm going to have some serious withdrawals.
