I guess my Nephew can finally have a Nintendo Wii. They don't have Wifi to connect it to the Internet at my sisters house anyway and since it is $99 she might actually purchase it for him.
Edit* Apparantly he can't because it is Canadian exclusive for now.
SUPER MARIO MAKER LEVELS:
If he looks or she you can easily get a regular Wii for $99 now.
Yeah Walmart had the regular Wii's for $80 on Black Friday.
SUPER MARIO MAKER LEVELS:
Almost friday GG, getting excited?
I don't see the point of that new Wii at all...you mean to tell me that 6 years on and with the lowball tech that was the Wii in the first place, that they couldn't just sell that for $99 like people used to do with even high end consoles by year 4? Hell, this system was pretty much based on Gamecube tech, and they were selling that console for $99 just 2 years after release.
I still do not believe that Nintendo had to release the Wii at $250. I remember Matt Cassamassina saying it should have been $150 from the get go and I agree. I've always thought they just upped the price to make people think it was more high tech than it really was, being sold next to consoles that cost $600 and $400.
No.
I don't trust Amazon to deliver on time and I cancelled my order for a couple of games so I only have NintendoLand coming. Plus from reading the internet I know the first days are going to be updates, locking, freezing and broken controllers. Plus I have babysitting on Saturday.
Or frame rate problems.
The new wiis don't do GC support either right?
IIRC Miyamoto said the original plans were for it to be a $99 console but shrinking the components etc made it more expensive. Also at the time the motion controllers were quite expensive, I believe it was only because the price of gyros dropped that they were able to make motionplus. The controllers were like $60 or something.
So they had a console that was a very very very slightly bumped up version of a super small console that they were selling for $99, 3 years before the Wii released. And the new controller cost $60 which is pretty much what it cost to buy one. Still not seiing the need for $250.
BTW Nintendo has shipped the Gamepad..its on its way back. I think they're sending me the same one back, but not sure. I really want to know what was wrong with it.
You make it sound like they smushed a GC down with a hammer, painted it white and farted it out of the door.
You're vastly over simplifying things. If you make a list there are many, many things the Wii does which GC cannot - for a start it's 100% backwards compatible. And the base tech is better, it's better than the original Xbox too, but with no programmable shaders. Shrink everything down, miniturise components to add extra cost then add expensive-then-experimental motion controllers and pack in a game worth $50. GC didn't come with a free game or free memory card either, Wii came with in built flash, better RAM and CPU etc. Add in distribution and marketing costs.
In the end what hurt them was their aim to make a $99 console and yet the design team having the goal of making this small power efficient console that the mother of the house wouldn't object too. If they had just used the same money to make the console with no size retrictions or power consumption restrictions it would have been a more powerful console. Unfortunately the same thing can be said of wii U. Rumous say that their underclocked the CPU so it would not overheat in the small case. It's stupid bollocks.
Just make a bigger case Nintendo. FFS.
The Gamecube did not need to be backwards compatible with itself. It would have been BC with N64 if they weren't morons and put a disc drive in that console I'm sure. And I know the tech was better...as I said, very very slightly better. Gamecube was slightly less than the Xbox 1, Wii was slightly more. Which was pointless on their part because nobody gave 2 flying fucks about this console being a microscopic bump over the Xbox 1 since it really didn't matter, and other machines were doing things far in advance of this anyway, even a year before it released.
They literally SHOULD have just painted the Cube white. What they did with the Wii would be like me wasting my time trying to get 5 extra horsepower out of my car. Is it going to make a difference? Is anybody going to care? No!
I hope that's not the big holiday game 2013.
The point is that it costs money for that feature, hence why they are cutting GC backwards compat for more modern wii's to acheive a lower cost. They cut hardware level backwards compat with PS3 too.
As I said, Wii came with a $50 game and a $60 controller, inbuilt flash memory that leaves what? $140 to make a console that's also backwards compatible and some of that cost is eaten up by using more expensive, smaller components. Also the Wii has better graphics than the Cube. Lord I love Wind Wakers art buy SS shits all over it technically as Mario Galaxy does over Sunshine. MP3 has twice the texture resolution compared to MP 1 and 2.
No AAA third party pushed the console or made big budget games for it. Same thing will probably happen to Wii U once the competition comes out. There is no doubt in my mind that if the great graphics studios had made big budget AAA Wii games, they would look undoubtebly and consistently look better than Xbox 1. Did you read the full Factor 5 interview where Eggrebrecht talked about what was possible even if it was a small bump over GC?
Instead you had mostly C-teams and the niche guys making games for it. Factor 5 could have knocked it out of the park with a Rogue Squadron Wii. Rebel Strike had a huge fill rate and pushed more polys than Xbox ever did. You didn't and won't ever really see the best looking Wii game because Nintendo doesn't focus on graphics and everyone else was busy making games elsewhere. The same thing will happen with Wii U.
Seriously if you don't think the Wii is more powerful than GC you haven't been looking hard enough.
All U games will suffer from this too. Games will be made for 360 then ported over, then in a couple of years they will be made for Nextbox and downported to U. I really don't see Crytek or Valve building a ground up U game. Nintendo's next zelda is more likely to be cel shaded than realistic at this point. Even if Metroid U is a stunning game, no one will care because newer consoles will have better looking games.
In the end gamers just look forward to the next best thing like a girlfriend just waiting for a richer, better looking guy.
I wonder if this might be what Retro is working on; I doubt it but I hope it is good Yoshi's Island is my favorite 2D Platformer.
