That feeling of immense tension you feel is because a new podcast is on the way, should be up in about an hour. One Hundred and Seven podcasts. Congrats everyone involved, that's pretty cool.
Concept Grand Prix Wii U? Nice time for ludicrous rumours, before E3 LOL
Sonic co-creator joins Nintendo? Well, it's all over, Nintendo, the dick rot starts here.
EA the Worst company in America?
Come on. It's becauses gamers are more internet savvy and would vote for stuff like this.
Honestly Bear, none of the pics have any watermarks on them at all, unless you are talking about the 'Sega' gamefront has stock typed right at the bottom of the page which is what they always do to denote what publisher is making a game.
You're right, there is selective reading going on. Check everything in context below:
If you read the full quote, I think it's pretty obvious that is is saying it will be the best console version of the game technically:
"I think the machine itself will be one of the best looking versions of the game because you know, they've got more RAM then you know, some of the other things (platforms) and because they're late in the cycle so they've got this really great processor and some of the other stuff. This particular engine has the potential to really cross the generational gap between now and then."
If you look at it alongside what Gearbox said last year:
“We've got the [Aliens: Colonial Marines] engine running on the Wii U, and as far as the console goes, you're going to see textures at a resolution that you haven't seen on [the current] generation.”
And take this quote from 6 days ago, which is more talking about gameplay features:
"The Wii U version has so much more to offer ... no other platform can do what the Wii U can do," he says. "If you love [Xbox] 360 games, you are not used to being in a world where you have this new interface. But once you get used to that, you imagine the possibilities; there are some opportunities that are just not possible on any platform that does not have that device."
So he's saying Wii U has got more RAM and a really great processor compared to the other consoles, hence it will be one of the best looking versions - obviously the PC will be the best looking version. Take that in context with everything Pitchford has been saying, "you're going to see textures at a resolution that you haven't seen on [the current] generation.” Obviously the system is capable of doing textures at a resolution that you haven't seen before on PS3 and 360.
Try watching the video in the article when IGN got Wii Specs from developers prior to E3 last year and built their own project cafe from stock PC parts.
The video shows better than the pics the difference. They are just using PC ports and running the same games at higher settings on an unoptimised PC and even then the blanket improvement was that you got native 1080p output at 30FPS or higher where the console versions were only 720p. It ran Crysis 2 PC at the 'very good' setting at 1080p 30 FPS where the console versions ran it at 720p dipping to 24FPS.
You are going to see noticible performance benefits on Wii U, but it's not going to wow you like a generational leap would IMO.
Did you watch the original or the David Finch version? There are two sequels to the swedish films, very good trilogy.
IMO very disappointing if true.
This contradicts the Gamesindustry article which said the GPU was weak. These anonymous reports are saying the CPU is weak and the GPU is fine. Oh, but yesterday the Gearbox director said that Wii U was late in the cycle so had a "really great processor." So who are we suppossed to believe?
From developers we have heard about on GAF, these problems were due to middleware (software problems) and that performance had increased 400% since then. These guys must have been working on V3 devkits.
And now we have another new article today:
Read the rest of the article they say there may be an integrated GPU so it can do symetrical rendering. You know even if the 360 has the same CPU, quad core or whatever, since Kinect is built in, one of those will power Kinect alone so unless PS4 has Eyetoy as standard it should get better performance.
EDIT:
Some gaf dude said:
"Some of you guys are arrogant people who don't understand how video game development will scale over the years that the next-gen systems will arrive. 6670/7670 are not the most powerful GPUs out there today. In fact, they are of the low-end PC build today. However, they are still plenty times more powerful than what you see in the current consoles. Just don't expect great anisotropic filtering and/or true 1080p gaming if this is true (since the 6670/7670 are not great in those aspects). You will still notice a big bump in IQ.
Aside from texel and pixel rate, a 6670 is pretty close to a 9800GT in terms of performance. That alone should give you an idea of how much more powerful that card is compared to current-gen consoles. A 6670/7670 also uses a lot less power than the 9800GT.
Also to note, the manufacturers of the consoles will most likely heavily modify the card. It might end up being something very different from a 6670/7670, but the basic architecture and form will still be there. Another important thing is that Sony will not utilize DX11. They'll opt for some other API (OpenGL), which can still do what DX11 can do, mind you.
If this is true, don't expect true 1080p games next-gen, either."
"One thing looks certain though, and that's that Nintendo is sticking to its strategy of less powerful hardware combined with an innovative interface, leaving the high-end console space to its rivals."
Ok....so what happened to Xbox 720 only being 20% more powerful? These guys seriously need to get their facts straight about these consoles before they start reporting they are or aren't to a certain level.
I actually thought it looked like the control piece for one of those heating pads you'd put on your neck or shoulder.
E3 is only a couple of months away. At this point the contradicting reports are getting annoying, especially the anonymous ones. At least if we knew who they were we could sit them in a room together to hash it out. As I said before, even if PS4 and Nextbox had the exact same specs, integrating Kinect would see a performance hit unless MS compensated for it by bumping the specs over and above PS4.
I really hope they don't make Kinect the big feature of their next system...its so gimmicky its not even funny. Press a button to throw grenade, or yell at your camera like a retard? Cmon.
Honestly I'm not expecting any huge graphical bump over what Nintendo's machine that's supposedly no more powerful than the PS3 as is, can do. That card they are reporting for both consoles isn't even as powerful as my current PC card. Nintendo I am excited about because their console is a huge leap over the Wii, I like the controller, and they have lots of awesome exclusives to look forward to. Microsoft and Sony are gonna have to really show me something badass beyond a system with just a bunch of non gaming youtube, facebook, tv crap or a built in camera. And they're gonna have to bring the exclusives...lots of badass exclusives that are GUARANTEED to stay that way to get me excited.
We shall see.
From what I'm reading, even if PS4 and Nextbox are better than Wii U, they still won't be anywhere near as good as modern PC components -all the GPUs mentioned are low end PC standard?- so how are we suppossed to see this next gen leap people keep talking about? We're just going to see more PC-ish graphics right? You might have more native 1080p console games and some better lighting. What is going to make it wow? I can't wait to see UE4 and then hear how it will scale down to these new consoles. Will it be worth it?
Gamasutra is giving my internet security malicious website warnings, I would avoid today guys.
Wsippel is a confirmed Wii U dev on GAF.
And our resident french journo weighed in
It'll be a reasonable step up. My even more out of date video card puts console games to shame, but yeah, doesn't look like it's going to be a genuine generational leap.
Basically what you're saying probably. Consistent 1080P, improved textures and lightning, and there should be an improvement on massive games like Skyrim and the like too.
If it turns out like that then it's even harder to take given how fucking long this gen has been.
Yeah, I find it kind of hyperbole when people say those are low end cards....it makes them sound weak, which they aren't. I'd say more middle to high end...in that range.
You make a good point about how long this generation has been. You'd think by now we'd be able to get new consoles pretty affordable that are a really nice leap up. If these new consoles aren't going to be THAT much of an improvement, then why not just stick with 360 and PS3? Why the fuck not? Nintendo has needed to replace their dated as fuck hardware for a long time, but the other two have zero reason to outside of a major tech jump.
Again, not excited at all about new Playstation or Xbox right now. Especially when my PC as it is right now can outperform them.
Yeah that Mario dig..again, sounds like its just anti-Nintendo bullshit that every new Nintendo console seems to have gotten since the Gamecube.
Aliens actually looks really cool. Haven't checked it out much.
I read an article in Next Generation magazine back when Gamecube and Xbox were launching, where they compared all 3 consoles head to head.
They literally said that the Gamecube was nowhere near as powerful as EITHER Xbox or the Play fucking station 2!!! They said Nintendo wasn't concerned with power because cartoony games like Mario and Zelda didn't require it, but that the Resident Evil remake did show that the system could be very good at faking it.
No joke..this is really what the article said. Its then and there that I learned you can't always trust the word of people in the gaming business.
I was looking forward to it, then Duke Nukem Forever came out.
I'm still cautious but optimistic, I'm mainly interested because its one of the few wii u games development we are hearing about and the devs give an insight into the system.
Here's something to think about, even if the Wii U cpu is the same clock speed as the 360 cpu, 30% of the 360's cpu was used for sound conversion according to tech heads writing on GAF. Wii U has a separate sound chip so when everything is optimised, all things being equal, Wii U will still be able to get more out of the CPU than 360 games did.
Sony and MS released these raw power spec sheets with fillrates and speeds they would never be able to acheive.
Nintendo chose to release a realistic, real world performance tech sheet. Obviously the numbers were far lower.
They were ripped to shreds in the media and since then, they don't release specs to anyone publicly.
