Andriasang
Additional Details Surface on Nintendo 3DS
Mainstream news publications unearth details on control inputs, rumble and display technology.

Following up on Nintendo's announcement of the Nintendo 3DS today, a few mainstream sources have issued reports containing some possible details.

Nikkei reports that Nintendo plans on including a stick for controlling characters in 3D and will also include rumble in order to communicate attacks and strikes to the player. Nintendo acquired patents related to these control methods last year, the site reports.

The Nikkei report also states that the wireless speed and battery life are expected to improve greatly. Nintendo is also looking into including an accelerometer, which would allow players to control the action by tilting the system. The screen is also expected to be smaller than 4 inches.

Reagrding the timing of the announcement, the Nikkei report states that due to decreased software releases, Nintendo believed it was necessary to bring out a new system.

Nikkei also mentions a more specific time frame for the system. Nintendo announced a release for some time in the coming fiscal year, which starts on April 1 and ends in March 2011. The Nikkei report states that the expected release time frame is the second half of 2010. This appears to be calendar 2010.

Yomiuri Shimbun reports "it is believed that the system will use a Sharp 3D LCD panel." This display technology, according to the site, covers the screen with a small film, separated from the screen by a small space. The 3D effect is achieved by the slight differences in the image seen by the right and left eyes.

Mainichi Shimbun reports that some software developers have been briefed on the system and that software will be available at launch. This, of course, isn't really saying much.

Typical for mainstream publications, none of the sites listed sources for their information. It's unclear how much was heard directly from Nintendo and how much is educated speculation.

I'm still going through the training modes, but it feels really good so far. It takes a LOT of force to do strong sword swings. This game definitely requires your full arm movement. It's not just wrist flicks anymore.

The graphics are absolutely amazing! This is how mature games should be done on Wii; nay, on EVERY console!

EDIT: Okay, after adjusting the sword swing sensitivity to relaxed, you can do strong attacks with just quick wrist flicks.

I find this speculation on gaf interesting

This will be incredible if they put all their technologies together. Hearing about the rumors about them patenting rumble on the stylus, I'm fairly confident they'll do what I mentioned earlier, which is stick an IR LED near the end of the stylus (which the DSi Camera could track), which would allow you to manipulate things "above" the touchscreen.
I think you've probably nailed it. People keep mentioning analog stick, but if that's what they're using, why isn't that word used? "3D control stick that Nintendo got a patent on late last year" sounds like something new. And what you've described turns a stylus into a Wiimote in a similar way to Sony's Move. That makes a whole lot more sense than going back to old tech. Not Nintendo's style. At all.

Sounds good. You know you can adjust the swing force? And I think someone recommended that you put auto targeting on manual- don't remember why though.

There you go. I think I might adjust my sensitivity up when I get it.

With all the wrist action you get on a daily basis, swingin' that sword shouldn't be annnny problem for you.

Yeah, so I go to pick up MY copy of Red Steel 2 --NOT-- from my usual GameStop but from one I pre-ordered in 'cuz it was close to where I needed to be today.

I go to pick it up and the manager has an opened copy in his hand and he says to me: "Oh. I didn't think anybody preordered it without the bundle. I juuust opened this copy now. This is yours."

...and proceeds to try and sell me an opened copy of the game.

He tells me they only got ONE copy w/out Motion-Plus and he juuust opened it. Yeah. Right. They had the game in the store for the last week because of the street date. You KNOW some employee had that game at home, spinnin' in his dirty Wii, playin' it to death...

...I said "No thanks!" used the $5 towards a copy of Just Cause 2 for PS3 and left the store. I'll go to my usual GameStop, and get a nice, sealed copy there. They know me very well there and would never try to pull that crap with me!

Grrr... Still angry --AND-- I landed up buying yet ANOTHER game this week/month 'cuz of the shadey manager dude.

Oh well. Impressions later!

Red Steel 2 review embargo must have lifted at 9am PST as all the reviews have flooded in.

Examiner Red Steel 2 review

http://www.examiner.com/x-12218-Video-Game-Examiner

"If Red Steel 2 was what Red Steel was back in 2006, then this series would be the top Wii third-party franchise. You have to disregard the existence of Red Steel and go into this series with untainted eyes because Red Steel 2 is everything Ubisoft promised and plenty more. It's one of the best video game sequels ever made and not playing this groundbreaking Wii game would be an injustice. Ubisoft has finally shown us what kind of games can be made for Wii and has set a new benchmark for Wii FPS titles and any Wii game that may use a sword. Red Steel 2 is the top Wii game of 2010 right now."

Gamesradar review Red Steel 2

http://www.gamesradar.com/wii/red-steel-2/review/red-steel-2/a-20100322174021138019/g-20090430135117953091

"The first let so many down, while part two succeeds in just about everything it set out to do. Maybe it’s the bundled MotionPlus, maybe it’s just better programming, but we left Red Steel 2 thinking it could be the most improved sequel of all time. If you’ve given up on Wii shooters, here’s a reason to rethink your stance."

3D stick stuff

Sounds great, if its possible. But wouldn't the camera and your hand be a little too close for it to work properly?

Yeah, no idea. I just subscribe to the idea that Nintendo wouldn't reveal everything about it before E3-that there might be more to it than just 3d screens.

I picked mine up from Best Buy this morning. They had around 10-15 bundle copies, but only 4 or 5 disk-only copies. I almost left without mine because I only saw the bundles at first. Thankfully, an employee showed me where they put the others, which wasn't even in the Wii section. Sad
