Failure to win over an ethnocentric population that doesn't care about home consoles is not failure.

I won't argue with you, but Microsoft will.

I agree but MS will try because they hate to fail and consider anywhere or anything they can't adapt, overcome and control as a failure.

Oh, I know.  As we once discussed on a podcast, there is the smart thing to do and the right thing, and we can;t trust any of these companies to do the latter.

You have nouse. I have not questioned your savvy yet, and we've been chatting for like, 4-5 years now.

It does confuse me. Microsoft has been known to cut bait before. It didn't take them long toss the Zune aside once that was clearly a bomb. I wonder if it's because the Xbox brand has done so well everywhere else that they just can't leave the territory behind. I'm sure there's some logic behind it somewhere... though likely I'll never understand it.

Is it possible they still need to make an effort over there just to simply guarantee support from the Capcom's and Square's of the world?

Maybe they wouldn't be so willing to support MS if they didn't at least TRY in Japan, when they could easily just support Nintendo and Sony who are guaranteed some success worldwide, including Japan.
