Who do you think is more influential: Koji Kondo or Nobuo Uematsu?

My pick has to be Koji Kondo. I think even non-gamers will recognize his tunes anywhere. Uematsu is called as the John Williams of gaming, but I think Kondo is the most influential composer in video games.

Him and Miyamoto make such an amazing team. It's like they think for each other. I don't know if you guys heard this story before, but there's this one story on Wikipedia that Kondo rejected the originally planned tracks for Super Mario Galaxy written by Mahito Yokota. Then Yokota presented three anonymous tracks to Miyamoto. One track was a orchestral, the second was a mix of orchestral and pop, and the last one was pop. And Miyamoto picked the orchestral one which was written by Kondo!

Pretty amazing how Miyamoto and Kondo think alike.

As someone who has barely played any decent FF games, I am completely unfamiliar with his music.

If you are purely talking influential I would probably say you would go by how many people know the tunes or the sales of the game. The mario bros theme, everyone knows.

Yeah. Everyone knows the Mario and Zelda tunes. But Uematsu is good as well, but probably not as memorable. But that Final Fantasy crystal theme song is probably familiar to most gamers.

LOL Yeah. It was probably a no-brainer, dumb topic. But I was listening to Super Mario Galaxy's music and loved it so much, it inspired me to make this thread!

I don't think either is. Respected, loved by fans who wish for them to work on more games, sure, but I don't think I've played games that try to imitate either... Big games usually have their own talented composers with their own fans... My favorite would be the Panzer Dragoon composers. I can't find much information, the most famous is probably Saori Kobayashi but she only worked on Saga from the original trilogy, and Orta. Granted, Saga was the best, but I also loved the music in Zwei and the more orchestral style in the first game. Then there are others who worked on the games like Yoshitaka Azuma and Mariko Namba. It's hard to know who did what.



Two tracks from each game as a small sample. Saga, Zwei, 1. Not that they're representative of the wholes, you may hate these (well, no, you can't) and still love others, the styles vary a lot from scene to scene.
