I've been playing a lot of Dawn of War for the past two weeks. I'm probably around 20 hours deep, and have so far 10 missions of the human campaign under my belt (out of 11).

Dawn of War is an RTS game developed by Relic set into the Warhammer 40,000 universe, with four races quarreling, including humans, chaos armies, orks and eldar. The game has 4 campaigns, one for each race (as far as I know), and has a number of features that do away with several anachronisms of the genre; the most important of them being the automatic gathering of resources by means of the required facilities.

This is important because it makes each scenario of the campaigns a white-knuckled struggle towards domination, as opposed to the slow build-up stages that other RTS games force you to endure by means of manually gathering resources through individual units. Playing sim city on an RTS is a game within a game, sometimes entertaining, but not too rewarding in the bloodshed department. By skipping the tedious early stages, the game forces you to fight for your survival since the first minute of each scenario, allowing you to focus of skirmishes, army build-up and tech tree advancements, in order to crush your oposition in the latter stages of the battle.

Considering that I'm just reaching the end of the human campaign, this game could easily last me another 50 hours. Once I finish it, I'll have three expansions at my disposal, already installed: Winter Assault, Dark Crusade and Soulstorm. Each one with tens of hours of gameplay. I guess I'm all set for a good while.

Some things can only be cleansed through fire.

I always wanted to play Soulstorm but the darn price doesn't drop with this game! I do want to try it though.

And I'm a huge fan of Company of Heroes, which is my favorite RTS of all-time. Exactly like Dawn of War but set in WWII. It's great!

Both series are definitely different from the traditional resource gathering RTSs, which gives it a different strategy. I enjoy RTSs and love both styles. But Company of Heroes is awesome!

Age of Mythology and Warcraft III are some of my other favorites.

From what I played of it it I couldn't get into it. (Played very little, though.)

For once the rip-off of something (Starcraft) is better than the original!

I fucking LOVED the first Dawn of War game. It was my first proper experience in the 40K universe, and everything about it really quite worked, from the atmosphere (everything is so over the top and AWESOME) to some of the unique gameplay additions (such as the squad mechanics, the cover system). The Dark Crusade expansion is probably one of my favourite games of the decade.

If any one of you guys gets DoW2, hit me up, I'd love to co-op with anyone here.

I'd avoid Soulstorm ASK. I hear it's not as good as DC.
