IGN has a number of new clips from Gamescom uploaded to youtube. Off screen footage but includes the player using the Wii U gamepad at the same time. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1SWFcvd0JJg http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=thzzjGiYvAY http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QjfWQxGJlkY http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6gXMbqzjQ0M http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iRbQMuFAHEo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qEiAmBAFbyg http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v4lF0KQNdMg |
Two things are stopping me from getting one at launch.
1. E3. I recently listened to our coverage of it, and nothing has changed since then.
2. I have no idea at what price this will launch at in Australia. Probably $499? And if it is, then there is no way I'll buy it. There is still plenty of gaming to be done on the 360 and PS3 before I need to get another console with a launch line-up that includes no games for me.
EDIT: For the record, I did get Wii and Gamecube at launch. The Gamecube launched with almost nothing. The Wii however had a pretty good launch, much better than the PS3. The launch line-up on this one is fairly good if you ignore the fact that the ones that are showing off the HD capabilities are not fresh games. I got the Gamecube because I was a Nintendo fanboy (there was no other reason to get it at launch), and I go the Wii because I bought the hype.

Amen .... that being said I might still buy if it's a decent price, Pikman 3 looks good, along with Zombie U as my launch games.
POTENTIAL LIST OF Wii 1 GAMES YOU CAN PLAY ON THE U-PAD SCREEN
The Wii U may allow you to play Wii 1 games on the U Gamepad screen. The advantage being that the Upad screen is 480p which is the native Wii resolution. If you have been playing Wii on an HDTV for all these years you may be suprised at how much better they look in SD, so there is a clear advantage to using the UPad screen.
If so they would be have to be games that did not involve IR aka direct pointing. Or any game which has classic controller support. The pad should theoretically be able to handle motion controls though. Can we think of games that you could play on the U-pad screen?
- A Boy and His Blob
- Arc Rise Fantasia
- COD Black Ops
- COD MW3
- Castlevania Judgement
- Conduit 2
- Dirt 2
- Endless Ocean 2
- Earth Seeker
- FIFA 9, 10, 11, 12
- Fire Emblem
- Geometry Wars Galaxies
- Klonoa
- The Last Story
- Muramasa
- No More Heroes 2
- NIGHTS
- Opoona
- Pro Evo 9,10,11
- Rayman Origins
- RE Archives
- RE4
- RE0
- Rune Factory Frontier
- Sin and Punishment 2
- Sky Crawlers
- Sonic Colours
- Sonic All Star racing
- Smash Bros Brawl
- Super Mario All Stars
- Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Ultimate All Stars
- Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Smash-Up
- WWE series of games
- Zangeki no Reginleiv
- Super Monkey Ball
- Dewys Adventure
- Mario Kart Wii
- Xenoblade
- Donkey Kong Country Returns
- New Super Mario Bros Wii
- Monster Hunter Wii
- Goldeneye 007
Some games may even be better to play on the Upad screen, the tilt games like Monkeyball would be wicked on it and the 2D platformers will be very fun to play like a portable.
Let me know of any more you can think of.
White Classic controller spotted
Is this confirmed?
Nintendo shouldn;t be half-assing this. They should just say, "Play your Wii games on U, here's a sensor bar".
Please Nintendo don't fuck up this fundamental point like MS did withthe 360.
I get that this might just be a list of games you can play on the gamepad, but don't confuse issues PR-wise. Just give us a sensor bar and be done with it.

You can play ALL Wii U games on the TV. You use the sensor bar that is on the gamepad. The gamepad comes with a stand, you simply put it in front of your TV to play IR games. The graphics will be on your TV screen.
Is that confirmed? I heard you say that to Steel yesterday. That's not a real solution.
C'mon Nintendo, it has to be a 70 cent part at this point.
If Wii U doesn't come with a normal sensor bar, I'll laugh my ass off. Nintendo are cheap bastards. so it wouldn't surprise me.
Mass Effect 3 on the U has me so intrigued that I may be willing to buy it again. I was gonna replay it on the PC again at some point, but I'm really interested in the U version:
That's cool if you can use the pad as a sensor bar...I think I'd prefer that honestly, as its getting tough to huddle so much crap on or around modern thin TV's. And I'm sure 3rd-parties will produce some kind of regular bar for it.
GG, great point about playing Wii 1 games on the Gamepad...that may be a great way to go. Though hopefully you can still run the sound through your stereo, as I've heard the speakers in the Pad are pretty shit. I wouldn't play ANYTHING on the Pad if I had to use that sound.
REmake is another game that should work on the Gamepad.

It's got a headphone jack, though right? Just plug that into your amp if you're using a stereo.

I'm not sure, does it?

I seem to remember it having one, but I wouldn't trust me.

They built a fully functional sensor bat into the gamepad, it's there, it's just built in. Placing a wireless controller in front of your TV is hardly a make or break move.

It has speakers and a headphone jack too and a wiiUware dev just said that they can route different audio to the pad and TV at the same time.
This comes free with the directors cut of Trine 2 on Wii U

Im too lazy to watch the video. Why is it so intriguing?
You can play stuff like Darksiders on your PS3/360 but hey, if you're getting a new console and the game is on it and the same price, it's tempting to just pick it up there so you have stuff to play. I didn't expect Darksiders 2 to be as good as reviews suggest but I was always planning on picking up Ass creed 3.
Wow, flashback. Were the lineups really that bad? Kameo? Excitetruck? Ridge Racer?
I guess the U lineup is better than I thought. Jesus fuck, Perfect Dark Zero. You have a lot of great Wii 1 games to play you should be able to play these on the Wii U gamepad with any luck:
Basically any game which has a classic controller option or no IR. With the pad screen being 480p it could actually be a very good option for getting the games looking how they should look if you don't have an SDTV hanging about the house.
For me definite buys are:
Highly likely:
Possibly maybe:
Longshot:
I forgot to mention in the OP, Ninja Gaiden 3 is being reworked for Wii U with full dismemberment among other things and tested by the Mario Club.
Ninja Gaiden 3 on Wii U to be the 'hardcore fan package'
"We left out some of the things the series was well-known for. We did leave some of our fans out. We had this opportunity to put those hardcore aspects back in. It's kind of the hardcore fan package of Ninja Gaiden 3." - Team Ninja boss Yosuke Hayashi
Also I don't know if this is a proper full exclusive, I doubt it but it is definetely a timed exclusive:
This is from the trailer^
You have to see them full size though
