Been playing this amazing game, two dungeons down and it's a blast. The echo system allows you to tackle situations in different ways. Now granted most of the puzzles are traditional stuff, light torches, reach something using an item, move rocks around. But now rather than having to X item you can come up with various solutions and that's pretty neat. I also thought combat would be worse but there is something fun about spawning an army of enemies and being able to hold enemies down with this hold power. Of course sword mode is there but mostly used for the really well done bosses that use echos you learn like the dungeon item.

The world is masssive and totally open once you get certain echos. I love just going above the trees and mountains and getting to different areas from above, feels like you are breaking the game but it's all designed for that. The best is when your curiosity leads to a heart piece or sword mode upgrade piece. The towns are large, the NPCs are fun and interesting with plenty of side quests and mini games to do. This really is mixing the freedom of new Zelda with design of old. Loving it so far.

Hey, Vader. FYI, there's apostrophe title bug on our forums, which is breaking the link to this topic. Using an apostrophe in title breaks the link and the page won't open. I managed to open it by right-clicking on it but it might not work for everyone.

Confused by coverage of this game. I though it was a paint by numbers version of the last story-tale style Zelda, but reviews are saying it incorporates elements from Breath of the Wild etc...?

Yes you can do so many creative things, it's wild. It has that spirt of creativity from TOTK but the constant flow of content from 2D Zelda. No endless wandering around, there is stuff to do everywhere. Every time you kill a new enemy you gain their echo and they open up so many cool abilities. I got a bomb finally cause I found a bomb fish so now I can spawn them and set them off. I later found a flying creature that spits bombs which is better than the fish, I can spawn three at a time, then I can grab and hold an enemy down while the three spit nonstop bombs on the enemy. Find a rolling ball enemy, well now he is a projectile when you use it, spawning them spawns a ball of death that shoots forward. Later I found this cave filled with this giant wooden wheel thing that would hurt me as it rolled down hill, but I got the echo so now I can summon this massive log of death with spikes.

Before to travel up walls I would have to summon a spider that climbs walls, grab it and reverse hold meaning I follow it up the wall, it works with any solid wall so you can get pretty much anywhere except a few exceptions, it's just a little cumbersome. But later you get a water echo allowing you to spawn a square of water which can go across or vertical, make a column and float up where you want to go, that became my go to way to climb up. But later in a cave I got the Zelda equivalent of a thowmp, which is basically a platform that goes up and down, now I spawn that and just ride it up. I keep finding new better ways to do things.

Oh and that water I can spawn, I can grab an enemy and drag them into the block of water and drown them for an instant kill. The game is brilliant.

Played about 5 hours today and didn't even do one dungeon, still had a blast. Yesterday I finished dungeon 4 which afterwards leads to the next part of the game, you know how Zelda games are split up, so now the world really opens up. Better quests, a lot more mini games and even optional bosses to fight. Never has a 2D Zelda have such a large world to explore and even though it's big it doesn't feel wasteful, I am constantly finding a new cave, a hidden heart piece, a new mini game, it's all so good. The story is even pretty good, each region has some drama to solve, a lot more talkative than the normal 2D Zelda, and so many more villages to explore.

Hero mode is available from the start, so I'm playing with that on and I have died a few times. The bosses in particular are fantastic and a good challenge. They make you use echoes in different ways while transforming into sword mode for the damage phase. Dungeons are fine, really fun puzzles in different rooms but no dungeon yet has feel like a puzzle in how to navigate, they have been pretty simple. Hopefully the next half of the game they go all out.

This is easily the best 2D Zelda since ALTTP/LA and might be my GOTY.

I'm trying to resist buying this game. The overall art style seems too similar to the last 2d game.

And the Zelda as a lead make it look more like a spin off.

I'm not doubting it's value, but there are lots of smaller cheaper games, so spending £50 on this is a bit too much for me.

I hear the world is 8x larger than the last 2d zelda.

Definitely not a spin off. I love that it forces you to figure out how to defeat a lot of the enemies.

Well fellas, the damage is so extensive that I now have a two week break from work. We originally were off the 3rd-11th for fall break. Now its a full two weeks.

Almost done now and the second half while having the best dungeons never really took the gameplay to that next level. I felt the middle was the best part where every new echo felt interesting, the game was opening up new locations, new mini games, new puzzles. But then at some point you just get more echoes that do similar things just better, it's a refinement and the puzzles never get more complex. So it all plateaus to me. Still excellent but not the top Zelda game I hoped for.

I wondered why butter and milk were found in treasure chests, then the hurricane happened and I completely understand now.

Full review is up now, I loved the game but there is always that little thing in the back of my mind of why don't they push things more. I went back to oracle of ages which I left at dungeon 5 and Jesus that dungeon is so much more complex than the dungeons in this game. Now they are also way more frustrating, the amount one way traps and backtracking needed is ridiculous but I am lost in a dungeon, I have to think about navigating the dungeon, that's important. My nephew started the game and is loving it, this free form Zelda works so much better with kids. Old Zelda is too strict and boring for them.
