Yes that is its function on a normal sword. But on a sword which can cut both ways it makes no sense.
The best part of that whole trailer was that lttle ball droid. Everything else looks like it's trying way to hard to seem cool.

It would work fine if there was some actual metal below the beam guard to stop your hand from slipping upwards. They want it to look like a sword though, how far away is the Lightshield?

OMG I would love a light shield!!! But again they are jedi, their movements are so precise they have no need for a shield. But stormtroopers would!!! Imagine an army of light shield troopers, fuck yes.
