Wow, where did this song come from?

nowisee - nano

It sounds like it could be right at home in Violet Evergarden (Netflix anime show)

(Che’Nelle) - Happiness ft. Nao Matsushita

This girl sings a ballad with a super clear voice, r&b style. Even the english words she sings sound great. Name is stupid though. Che'crap

Asian, is it? Here's Iranian pop and Israeli metal. Or here's some Korean music.

Twice, Heart Shaker love the scene transitions in this video, so seamless.

I chose this one at random to listen to and, though the music didn't appeal to me that much, the video was interesting. I do like dancing in videos.

There are so many Korean girl groups, lots of great videos.

Probably, Twice and Mamamoo are the best. Fromis 9, Red Velvet.

Steer clear of Black Pink.

This was originally a Japanese music thread, long abandoned since no one was interested. I've gotten back into it since so just rebranded it. We used to have a Music Recomendation thread but no one used it so it's lost in the mists of time. I'm going to check out your picks in a second.

Such a plenitude of links. I'll check a few after Rufus Wainwright.

I know a bit of Japanese music, such as DJ Ozma (pop/rock/hip-hop/dance/etc, and genuinely one of my favourite groups), Midori (jazz punk), An Café (pop rock/oshare kei), 385 (more jazz punk), and Yosi Horikawa (instrumental electronic music).

  • OMG DJ Ozma, the hair is like Jojo's Bizaare Adventure.
  • Midori sounds like a horro anime opening intro tune. Why is the one person in all gold? lol
  • An Cafe, I'm seeing a theme here. You like amazing headpieces/hats/wigs.
  • 385, I see you like punk/chaotic music a lot. I like smoother mellower, jazzy, funk, synth, indie or pop like music I guess.
  • Yosi Harakawa  - wow that's unique. At first I thought it was random background sounds.

The Korean track, another headpiece. laugh

So I was listening to some genuinely great Korean tracks last night, Zico, Heize and Kisum.

I particularly like Kisum No Jam which has a really fun video and vibe to it. I particularly like how they strap a steady cam to her back and front at times.

Here is another Radio FM802 collaboration track of various Japanese artists that is good: Stay Tune Buzz Connections

Did someone say punk/chaotic Japanese music?

Try Block B if you liked a Zico song (he's in it).

Yeah I tried a few Block B tracks last night. They sound quite different to Zico's solo career. Will listen to this one later.

Koi by Gen Hoshino was the top selling track in Japan last year.

Its a great track. His music has a intergenerational quality that all ages can appreciate. Other good songs are Sun and Family Song. https://vimeo.com/196141254

Gg, I would say most of this just isn’t my thing.  Which artist should I focus on?  I thought of downloading an album by Gen Hoshino and giving it a listen for about a week.

Ohhyuk and Cifika, particularly the former, are pretty damn solid.

In this song, the two are combined.

Indie rock, alternative.  Some dance rock, mostly.

Kisum - "No Jam" - I might have liked this with entirely different vocals.

Gen Hoshino - "Koi" - This sounds like something that could grow on me if given the chance.

My favourite DJ Ozma song.
And a song from his rock band Kishidan (there's also a DJ Ozma version that's very different and with female vocals).

Not sure what exactly you mean by those bolded?

Indie is my favourite genre regarding Asian music, especially Japanese bands - and we are well catered for in this genre. If you check the OP there are a couple of tracks linked from: Sumika and Goodwarp. There are going to be a lot of top picks here.

Sumika "Regret" Top Pick

Sumika Soda

Goodwarp?

Fly High! by Burnout Syndromes is a high energy tune from the excellent sports series Haikyu!!

There's tons of other great bands like:

On the whole if you want to just deep dive into a particular band, I would say Sumika, Nico Touches the Walls, Mrs Green Apple, Go Go Vanillas and The Oral Cigarettes have the most consistently great stuff.

Bit too dischordant for me. As Bugs pointed out, I like sugary sweet melodies.

Toyko Boogie back is my kinda jam. Kishidin sounds very Naruto, me likey. Thanks.

Here's a funky soul like track which I like as much for the video as for the music.

Heize and Dean, Shut up and Groove.

This is Daoko, she usually does more synthy, rap, alternative style music, but this is an awesome pure POP song:

DAOKO 『BANG!』 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8WN0JnAnASY

If you like this you will probably like Daoko Step Up Love with Yayusuki Okamura

This is the song that was in many ways led me into Asian music:

Anata - L'Arc en Ciel (Live@Madison Square Garden) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eK-y3pAzadk

This is such a great live performance. The stage is set, thousands of nerds grouped together, to share what they love. Happy faces all around, they start singing before the song actually starts. It creates a magical atmosphere. Then the lead vocal is super smooth and encourages audience participation. There is an epic guitar solo too.

BALLADS

Namidairo by Kana Nishio: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HnUuWe1Orfg

Ikimono Gakari - Egao

Ikimono Gakari - 1 2 3 Koi Ga Hajimaru https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vUPaDTaMOyc

MeloMance(멜로망스) _ Gift(선물)

And this is an awesome tribute to Michael Jackson.

RAIN(비) _ The Best Present

Really great dance too. Because of Rains' physique it's very different to the usual boy band dancing.

POP

kANA nISHINO - bELIEVE

Now this is an artist everyone should pay attention to.

Kyary Pamyu Pamyu - Furisodation

You may not liker the music but she's unique, very Kawaii the music is pretty catchy and each of her music videos are well worth watching, they really go all out to make them interesting too.
