also keep in mind not to view the feature through the lens of the current news display.  As I mentioned, I'd want to redesign it to make it viable, though I can see the concern about how much actual usage and viewing it would get.

^You mean change the news so it automatically scrapes instead of relying on Geek and me?

that wasn't what I was talking about.  There's been plans of that sort of thing a long time, but there hasn't been the right concept and time for testing/execution to make it happen.  A lot of stuff I've been behind on here for development :

^Good, as personally, I think it'd be tricky to pull off.  There is so much duplication in stories that if we went to an automatic feed it would take more effort to edit it than it would to continue the curation method we currently employ.

Loathe as I am to suggest this, given my disdain for Facebook, but I was thinking of the possible benefits of using a univeral log-in service like Facebook Connect for this site... hey hear me out...

For the people who lurk the site, if they were able to login through a trusted system, such as Facebook Connect, it may encourage them to comment.  Most of the people who have registered here know you (Yoda) from the other site, or trust you on the basis of knowing one of the regulars, but I can imagine that to a more recent reader of the site, those who don't know any of us from elsewhere, it must be a bit scary setting up a profile given that we are more than a bit underground.  I assume also it would make it easier for people to promote content from the site into their Facebook Wall etc...

I don't know what other unified login solutions are out there (if google does it) or how this would go about setting up a regular profile here, but if you don't like the idea don't take this post as anything more than a way for me to get this idea out of my head.

If ever there were a time for Aspro-style revisionism it is now.

The idea of OpenID was a consideration at the start, and it's not something I particularly like.  There are benefits to a unified service, but I think the negatives outweigh it.  The biggest issue being that it's completely contrary to the basic security practice of not using the same password everywhere.

Hi Yoda, hope your new PC is cool.

I was wondering if it would be possible to arrange search results by date at all as an option?

Please, please increase the character limit for news stories, just 10 more please.

It's so much work for me otherwise having to shorten everything, delete things, rearrange titles or change symbols. You don't see it on the user end but for me, posting the news it can be a lot of hassle.

Is there any interest in an IM system?

That's a little like how GGweekly is used, no?

Generally my experience with IM chat clients on websites has been poor, but if people used it here I probably would too.

Without expressing pro or con, it would be a persistent peer-to-peer chat available along the top toolbar, and would display recently spotted as "online".  It makes sense to merge it with PMs, then offline IMs would just be unread PMs.  For those familiar, basically like Facebook chat.

The top of my development queue is to make the forum more dynamic, loading in posts (still gotta work out the design to make it intuitive), so yeah, GG weekly would be directed more towards being like a public chat.  The IM would be private.

I like as much of our content to be web searchable as possible, so not sure if that would be an option.

It would certainly be useful for special events like e3 conferences, but as an ongoing feature it might suplant ggweekly.

IM chat would be awesome! That'll be especially useful during E3. Grinning

I think people are ignoring the private part of the private chat.  No worries of supplanting anything, and it's content that you wouldn't want web-searchable.

Dynamic loading of comments on the forum is happening regardless.  I'm just gauging interest of IM.
