I feel that its one of the coolest, most innovative FPS's ever made, & one of the N64's shining moments of glory. I wish more games made me feel the way Goldeneye and Perfect Dark did back then.
Playing the enhanced version of Xbox....I had more fun than I did playing any of the current FPS's out this year. I think that says something.
I got a woody the first time I played Perfect Dark. It was so cool and fun. The only thing I disliked about it was how easy it is to get lost in some levels.

Get the XBLA version. DO IT!

You're missing out man...download the Xbox version NOW....really.

Tell me to get back to rewriting this site so it's not horrible on mobileDvader said:Rented it one time many years ago. It was good.
Good? Just good?
I thought the frame rate made it unplayable. I'd probably love it otherwise. My favorite FPS of the era is Exhumed (Powerslave) on the SEGA Saturn, it's basically an Egyptian fantasy Metroid Prime. The engine may appear a bit like Doom but it's much better with actual 3D levels that expand horizontally and vertically. You find artifacts that grant you new skills you then use to reach new areas in previous levels that then lead to other levels or artifacts, weapons, keys, etc. This guy plays pretty bad but good players have speedrun videos that skip stuff...
It's such a shame the sequel never happened, Lobotomy was an awesome studio... Here's a better player, though he skips everything and is more concerned with finishing levels than not taking damage etc, but at least you see him pick up an artifact that increases jumping strength (height and length).
It's the reason I really liked this Source mod (it plays quite differently but the theme is so good).
It seemed like it would have been fantastic, though.

Wow, that's the first I've heard of this. The only problem, and to be fair it wasn't really a problem, just a comparison to Goldeneye - it's levels were less circular and far longer than GE's levels, so they weren't as easy to replay.
Exhumed looks very Doom like. Do you guys remember the first Thief? Or Hexen?
I bought it new from target for $9. I was shocked to find it so cheap, as it had only been out for a few months.
I tried playing it twice, about 3 years apart and found it unplayable due to the graphics. And I got lost a lot -- I don;t think I ever made it past the first level.
So what Agnates and Rave said applied to me.
I'll try it again someday -- I intend to focus a lot of my time on the N64 at some point in the future.

Were you playing it in high-res mode? I remember trying to play the game in that mode, and the framerate was awful. Putting it in standard-res with letterbox helped a lot in that regard.

Getting lost? I've always gotten lost in Rare's games. Their games are like mazes. I'm a hamster, dammit! Not a lab rat!
High res mode? WTH? I thought the ram pak was required just for the single player?

The graphics were antiquated only 9 months after launch? If you play it again start on the easiest difficulty and then try each level on the next level up in difficulty. It adds new objectives and gives you a feel for the level.

You could turn on or off Hi-Res mode. Playing without it made the game run MUCH smoother. It was unplayable in Hi Res IMO, sure it didn't look much better than Goldeneye in low-res, but it ran pretty smooth. I can't remember if the ram pak was required to play the campaign, but either way you DID NOT HAVE TO PLAY IN HI-RES MODE.

I remember high res mode in Turok 2 and in Hybrid Heaven. Not in Perfect Dark. I wish my system still worked so I could check this out. I remember the visuals being much better than Goldeneye.
In hi-res it did look a lot better than goldeneye...but it ran like shit.
Turok 2 ran fine in hi-res...so apparently many of those guys that left Acclaim and joined Retro Studios were great with maxing frame rates even then.
I guess this thread was spurred by Goldeneye nostalgia and me remembering what Vader said about how he played Perfect Dark N64 a lot later after release and never took to it.
In my eyes, it still stands out as probably the most innovative FPS I ever played. To me it was a game about ideas, it was almost bristling with them. Instead of a standard Doom like shooter, or even let's say a COD like shooter, it was all about design and invention.
When I look back and remember its innovations, it's almost like the game was years ahead of the curve. Things like the laptop gun that could turn into a turret, or the remote camera you could move about to scout around, or the gun that could see through walls. Or the Robocop like lock on gun where you painted targets. Or having secondary fire modes on your weapons.
I still enjoy it over many modern shooters. How did you feel when you first played it and how do you feel about it now?
