50 hours in now, about 75% complete and I still love playing this non stop. Even though I have fought every robot I am still thrilled when I battle them. There is this unpredictability to some of these fights, especially when you get an odd mix of robots that makes each encounter special. I am more badass than ever so I get a bit more bold taking on bigger groups than ever. Plus some of these later robots, oh man its a boss battle in any other game.

I also have advanced the story quite a bit and it is great. It is full on sci-fi goodness, incredible world building that is very detailed. Now be prepared to read files and listen to audio tapes but its all worth it as the mystery of what occurred is revealed.

The missions themselves might be the weakest aspect of the game, not that they are bad its just they tend to put humans all over the place and they are easily the worst part of the game. When you go from using all your tools while fighting these amazing robots to a stupid guy you can kill with one arrow it is a jarring contrast. Now they mix it up a bit by mixing humans with robots but still its forced. Also most missions take place in more enclosed locations, I prefer the open world. The majority of my time has been spent outside missions and nearly all my favorite moments in the game happened while exploring.

Now this is not to say the story in these missions are bad, I think the side quests are pretty damn great. They clearly went right to the witcher 3 handbook and stole the side quests from that. They take you to off beat locations, usually have some cool story involving interesting new characters. Some put you into battles with robots in the open world which I like more than the main mission sticking me in some enemy base. But best of all you get to see what an amazing character Aloy is. She is just the right amount of sarcastic, heroic, and a pure hearted good hearted character. The voice acting is fantastic across the board, I cant praise the story elements enough.

These later story missions are amazing! This is one of my favorite new universes in gaming, the lore is so rich and detailed, it has all the elements of great sci-fi. Aloy is probably my favorite new lead character in a game this gen. The side quests are witcher 3 level of quality, there are some good story lines there, the difference is horizon has great gameplay. And these late story missions are getting really exciting.

This is the best new franchise this gen. This is my favorite PS4 exclusive. Play this game.

Back to this game, since my OCD requires I beat it.

When they make a sequel there should be an expansion to the weapon wheel to account for all your ammo options, or fucking streamline the game to have one fucking bow, that uses all the different arrows. It's a redundancy, and needing to pause to switch weapons interrupts flow. Otherwise I've rarely if ever bothered with the Warbow or the trip caster since the sling is more useful given the explosives, fire arrows n tearblast arrows are far more useful, and ropecaster+crit hit/heavy hit are stronger combinations. The machines have been solid in the case of corruptors, ravagers, and yeah that Thunderjaw. Oh and snapmaws. Wildly unimpressed by the others, especially glinthawks. Cauldrons are fairly unimpressive dungeon areas, with those type of throw away puzzles in those tombs in the new tomb raider games.

All human combat is dull n unsatisfying in this game, and it's only hurt more by how fucking pathetic the stealth is. It is has 2 functional states. Throw a rock or whistle them to you. And the whistle them to you is a wildly superior move, making throwing a rock utterly pointless. Breaking line of sight is appreciated, but again who cares, the sneaking is dull as fuck.

The story is so fucking lame. First and formost the character is poorly directed. The rest of them speak like tribal primitive english, but this bitch is juggling that and being a cali white girl (this is what actual cali white girls sound like Tomas), and the line delivery is consistent awful. Routinely there isn't a pause between sentences so you have these ridiculous shifts in the characters tone that never feel natural or fluid like an actual conversation would work. It doesn't help that for all the prettyness of the game, it's shot/reverse shot cutscenes, where the models stand perfectly still while they jaw jack. Half the reason why cutscenes in Naughty Dog's games are good, is because they actually animated and present the characters in a manner that makes them come off as expressive. Not the case with the Horizon. And Guerilla isn't exactly Bioware (when they were good) in terms of directing dialogue. Much less writing dialogue.

There was one fucking exchange right between some bitch named Sona and Aloy (dumb name), where the chief because she saves her in a cutscene tells her how in a half heart beat Aloy would have been dead. Red head responds with half a heart beat, I would have killed. And I mean it wasn't even a second after she said that she goes, and I quote " Uhhh you are war-chief sona", and I cracked up for all the wrong reasons. The first part of Aloy's response is a clear come back to dismiss Sona's statement, which works when she doesn't fucking respond with "uhhhhhhhhhhhh" in less than a second after that. Its a sudden as fuck tone change A, B comebacks work better when you don't rush over to your next talking point in a comeback, you let it marinate. Was the entire staff of this game white? Do they not have black friends? And C again, conversations have natural pauses, its why we have paragraphs. Switching subject matter.

And this shit happens constantly in this game. It's either straight up awful acting or its poor direction (it's probably both), and its jarring for anyone well versed in better cinema. And game or otherwise, your using film language to express yourself, so I'm not lowering my expectations because you decided to take your hack work to video games. Otherwise everything in the city of the sun stuff has done nothing more than bring the plot to a screeching halt. I don't care about some dude's sister, I don't care about any of this shit that is getting us nowhere. Not that I care for these tribes people whose god is a fucking door, but you know its the common problem of open world game story telling leading to the middle act being utterly filler, taken to another level of filler.

Otherwise the machine combat stuff is fine enough that I am engaged, if not actually entertained. The game needs genuine depth, and more interesting links between your tools. The part where its an open world game means there is a shit ton of filler.

-Climbing longnecks - boring

-finding pottery - boring

-finding vantage points - boring

-errands n side quests - watered down versions of quests you're already doing, thus yeah pretty boring. Little to no deviation

-detective vision/witcher sense/focus tracking quests - these are never good, who started this? Was it you Batman? You piece of shit.

One day someone will make the all killer, no filler open world game, but it sure as fuck isn't Horizon. Other than it looks pretty. At least it has that going for it.

Playing the frozen wilds expansion, this game is still incredible. The new enemies are great and I love how this area has new ways to stop the overpowered strategies and force the player to use new tactics and weapons. The story is mostly throw away but Aloy is still an excellent character and you meet interesting people. Quests have been great, almost no human enemies. It is more of the same and that same is great.
