I'm having an usual issue with my computer's monitor. A few days ago it stopped coming back on when it would power down from no use. Then it started to just go black all together. The blue "on" light stayed on during this time. If I turn it off and then back on, it might come on for a second or two, but goes right back to being black.

If I disconnect the RGB cord (the cord that connects it to the PC) the monitor turns back on and the "cable not connected" message pops up and starts floating around the screen. I got a new RGB cord today thinking that perhaps the old one was bad, but the same thing is happening now. THis morning I've blased it with canned air thinking that maybe that would help. That seemed to bring it back to life for about 5 minutes, but then it went right back to where it was, so for all I know maybe just turning it upside down caused that.

I've also plugged the monitor into my laptop and the same thing happens, so it doesn't seem to be a problem related to my PC. At this rate it looks like the monitor is busted, though it really isn't that old or rather, never got that much use. Its probably going to have to be tossed out, but before I do does anyone else have a suggestion before I drop money I really don't have on a new monitor?

From the steps you have provided above your monitor is toast. The only thing else you can try is see if it has an HDMI connector and use that or...

make sure the plug for the RGB on the monitor itself is clean (since you already know it is not the one on the PC given you tried it on the laptop... though, I am assuming when you connected it to your laptop your laptop knows that it is there and what to do (you may have to go into display settings to tell your laptop what to do whena second monitor is plugged in (the whole "detect monitor" thing.
