They had a 30 minute behind closed doors presentation, what the hell Kojima, why.

So here is the reaction:

http://www.ign.com/articles/2014/06/10/e3-2014-metal-gear-solid-5-the-phantom-pain-is-spectacular

Phantom Pain is an immediately stunning game. The scope of the mountainous landscape littered with canyons, livestock, villages, and creeks is staggering. Riding your horse across the plains brought shades of Red Dead Redemption, even down to the way the music would swell as you neared a dangerous area.

What’s even better is that you can chopper your way back to your fully-customizable Mother Base at any point in the game and wander around your creation. Seeing the spoils of my actions wandering about your base brought to mind shades of Skies of Arcadia and Suikoden, and I couldn’t be happier about that. Troops were practicing at shooting ranges, Snake could spare with his men to raise their levels, and we even spotted a young Revolver Ocelot gazing off longingly into the sunset.

Then the demo took a comedic turn. Apparently, the Fulton recovery system can be used to abduct a number of things–not just humans. Sure enough, I saw a goat, a storage container, and a military SUV hoisted into the air via balloon. Depending on the weather conditions and your surroundings, there’s the chance that the recovery won’t go as planned. You’re given an indication of the success rate in the form of a percentage, which is typically around 80% in good weather. Interestingly, rather than call for a helicopter when you want to be evacuated to Mother Base, you can take a seat in a vehicle, or hop on top of a container, and use the Fulton system for a quick escape. However, if you try to do so in a sand storm, there’s a chance that you’ll be thrown off course, and likely die as a result.

After the presenter snuck away from his box, he went around a building and spotted a nearby enemy. It was then that he demonstrated Snake’s new method of wall knocking; the technique that beckons nearby guards. Rather than rapping his knuckles against a wall, Snake spins his prosthetic hand at the wrist, which emits sparks and a series of audible clicks and clacks. You no longer need a wall to knock. However, Snake was leaning against a wall, and when a soldier came around to investigate, Snake scooped him up by his neck, turned 180 degrees, and slammed the soldier’s head into a wall. Similarly, when you’re hiding in a dumpster, you can pop out and wrench an enemy inside, incapacitating him.

Then Snake approached the base where he hoped to find information regarding Miller’s whereabouts. Sure, Snake can mark guards and track their movements, but there are some guards that remain out of sight. Always the man with the plan, Snake has a way to monitor the movements of soldiers over the course of an entire day. How does he do this? By smoking an e-cigar, of course. Yes, it’s absurd, but while Snake puffs away on his smokeless cigar, which emits fake, holographic smoke, time passes unusually fast, and you can use the iDroid to keep track of different patrol patterns. Once you’ve got a good idea of where soldiers like to go, you can set multiple markers and use them as waypoints to steer yourself clear of harm’s way.

WOW! Man so many new elements. The base sounds awesome.

Yeah this is going to be insanely badass if Ground Zeroes is any indication.

Horses take a next gen shit.

Here is a great read up on it all

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2014-06-11-managing-mother-base-in-metal-gear-solid-5-the-phantom-pain

roxima, sans-serif;font-size:14px;">Before Snake heads towards the enemy camp, he surveys his surroundings. It's a gorgeous scene. The Phantom Pain's stunning open world is 200 times bigger than Ground Zeroes', we're told. This is true next-gen gaming, I think. Then Snake's horse takes a dump, right in front of the camera. We see everything, from the rear, in all its 1080p60 glory.

roxima, sans-serif;font-size:14px;">Back at Mother Base, which you can return to at any point during a mission if you fancy a quick escape, Snake inspects his Diamond Dogs. Welcome back, Boss, they say, saluting. Then that sheep pops out.

roxima, sans-serif;font-size:14px;">"Baa."

roxima, sans-serif;font-size:14px;">I bloody well love it.

In the past, it was used for gaining new recruits.

So I saw the whole video and its fantastic of course. Though I hope people are ready for what this game will be. It is not a straight story that starts at one point and you progress to the end. It will be broken up into a ton of missions just like Peace Walker. The base will serve as your hub and managing it will play a large role.

From GZ we know how some of these missions maybe like, from this demo we know the ranking is still there, of course that means you can replay any mission. I did not see the side objectives but they probably show up on subsequent plays, I hope they stay in cause they were a blast to play. I assume hidden collectibles will be around the game world, probably unlocks special missions.

The big question is if there are side missions in the middle of the world map like most open world games. If Boss runs off will he find some NPC giving out a quest or some dynamic mission. There has been no indication of that and this demo does not show any random side missions. I dont know how that would fit with the mission structure of Peace Walker, so that is something to watch.

The best thing to take from this demo is the base attacks. YOUR BASE CAN BE INVADED BY OTHER PLAYERS! That is not confirmed but it seems to be what the narrator hinted at. I would guess this would be partly how Metal Gear Online works, perfect way to integrate it into the main campaign. The whole base looks INCREDIBLE. Fully customizeable, I love how boss can basically platform jump his way down. You can play mini games, interact with soldiers. Who knows maybe you get to drive a Metal Gear.

The fulton system is a big topic at gaf, how easy does it make the game. The demo had infinite fulton in the main game there should be limits. But yeah removing everyone is not as interesting as hiding bodies. That said collecting stuff is fun but in PW after a while there was no need to do it anymore. It needs to be balanced. Same with the amount of support your base can give. It seems you have god powers, being able to rain down death at any moment with giant missiles. I assume you can have ammo and weapon drops, those that hated the gun system in MGS4 will not be pleased.

One of the hidden aspects of MGSV are the bosses and Kojima said in an interview (got this from gaf)

Mr. Kojima mentioned interesting things about upcoming MGSV bosses battles; in particular, he said (and I’ll paraphrase it) that they are “designing something completely different than what they’ve done before for boss battles”, including “the necessity for the player of doing very specific triggering events to unlock some of the encounters, while others will be present during more linear missions” that the player will have to affront to progress in the story, similarly to previous games in the saga.

Well that sounds fantastic. I was afraid it would be a shit fest like PW bosses.

Did you notice Boss is a mute now? This is what happens when you get a big celebrity, you can tell Keifer didn’t record that much.
