Fixed.
Looks like it was my save that was the problem. So I'll start over on easy until I get back to where I was up to (which works out given I am finishing up the book and fully invested in Artyom at this point).
I tried playing it in November but decided to stop playing games that might overheat my (laptop) computer in the heat of summer. And then I played System Shock 2. I expect to get back to it in the (fittingly) colder weather of autumn or winter.
