For those who don't know, I currently work as a web developer (that is, getting paid to create things like this site...only, less interesting than this site).  There are a lot of old projects that need updating, so I get to see the handiwork of developers gone by.  And let me tell you, it ain't pretty.

It is almost inconceivable (it means what I think it means) that work this shoddy actually exists.  Nobody's going to be writing immaculate code when you have the stressors of deadlines and other projects looming, but this isn't just speeding down the highway, it's driving plastered.

So I want to hear the stories of woe from the rest of you.  Is your industry tainted by the ineptitude of the imbecile?

In my last job (hopefully my last job) I got to hire the people I worked with so I was sheltered.

To this day I am still surprised when I encounter incompetance.  It's something that stops me in my tracks, and I start thinking about how the person got hired, why do they stay in the job, do they know they are incompetant?  There are plenty of different types of jobs out there, I always wonder why people stick to something they are not good at.  They cannot be enjoying it.

Irony?

The sad part is that, in the cases I see, I doubt they know it.

Sad for you, great for them.  In the cases where I've encountered people with poor skills (in the workplace) they have always been aware of it.

For some reason I read this as impotence in the workplace.  I was like "what?"

The "don't double space after a period in the union forums or it will cause a html error" for what FOUR years now?  They should be fired.

LOL I forgot about this after you mentioned it over a year ago.  The beauty of it is that you have to go out of your way for extra spaces to matter -- by default, they're ignored entirely.  I'm genuinely curious about how many people are on the payroll for development there.

What annoys me is when the student surpasses the master like Star Wars and you have to still defer to a boss with no more, or less, intelligence than you.
