Have recently finished Act 1 and have done a bit in Act 2. Combat is a lot of fun. Am very much enjoying the story and characters. Dialog and voice acting are very well done.
It's fucking crazy. The whole game is madness with crazy shit going on at all times. Having said that the combat, flashy as it is, is underused in the sense that there are no actual skill checks, or bosses that truly demand of you actual mastery of the mechanics. I keep reading there's endgame content that is precisely that so we'll see I guess.
Presentation is top notch. Visuals, music, art direction. The story is much more enjoyable than what I initially expected.
Also Cid is truly a man's man.

This game is just balls to the wall action and insanity. This is what GoW used to be and should be in modern day consoles, these battles are wild. I am loving the story, it's clearly game of thrones inspired with lots of adult themes but still has that Japanese hero to save the world vibe. It's also very very heavy handed about slavery and bigotry, good topics to cover to be sure but I don't know if it has the finesse to really pull it off. I love the family dynamics and how exciting the story is, it moves at such a great pace.
This game is not an RPG in anyway. The whole leveling up and stats thing seems like a hold over just to say hey it's there but you level up and all stats go up evenly, you don't get to do anything. There is almost always one better weapon and armor to pick, they don't even have secondary stats to customize anything. The only real building you get to do is pick accessories which are a stat bonus to offense, armor or specific moves and the abilities you choose to have for battle. It's obviously more DMC than anything FF, status effects don't really matter, just mash away and make sure you are dodging at the right time and you will be fine.
sadly most of the general battles around the world are push overs, you can have fun with the combo system and look cool but there is no real threat. The time the combat really shines are the action levels where there are plenty of amazing boss battles. Here every ability you have should be used at the right times to reach stagger as fast as possible and inflict as much damage as you can. Then there is arcade mode which lets you replay these levels but with a scoring system and limited health, this is where it really feels like DMC. The fights are just fun to do, combat is great, good thing cause that is all there is to this game.
I do miss building a party, having strategies for different enemies. Overall I think FF7R is the right balance for a FF game. But I can't deny just how strong the story and combat is, these boss fights are incredible. The summon battles are show stoppers and have some good variety to them. This is a non stop thrill ride.and the graphics, production values are at a level on FF games ever achieve for RPGs, something special about them.
I wanted to find my FFXV review and I can't seem to find it anywhere. My last post in the OT was "review soon", where?!. Not in my reviews, it's not in a blog, or the Gamathon thread. Did I never write one, damn.
This game is INSANE!!!! The setpieces are some of the greatest I have ever seen in video game history!!! This is true next gen wild stuff, what a boss fight!! The story continues to be excellent. The locations and graphics are just eye candy. Combat when in the action levels if really fun, the bosses are top notch for sure.
But The stuff after that last incredible setpiece has been a letdown. From a story point of view it’s been good, lots of getting to know characters on a deeper level, the story is great.
The gameplay however is totally mind numbing outside the action levels and bounties. None of these trash mobs in the open world provide any semblance of a challenge, the rewards are mostly pointless, the combat isn’t deep enough to feel like I want to fight them. The quests have been a series of go to marker, do thing, go to marker, do thing (usually kill something or worse, press x on object).
So it's uneven, so I get some of the lower scores, for me though these action moments alone make this one of the best games in the series, I love it. I do prefer FF7R though but they will be close, at least cause remake isn't a full game.
Too many games to play. I'll be lucky if I play Diablo 4 this year!
I think I’m getting close to the end. There’s been a number of really crazy boss fights that would put the end game bosses of some games to shame. Love the combat in this game. So many cool moves to play with. Really intrigued with the story. Some great characters with well written dialog and are well voiced.
Finished my first playthrough and what an excellent game it is. Really enjoyed the story and characters. Combat is great and a hell of a lot of fun. Some cool enemies and bosses to fight. The boss fights are epic af as the kids would say. Great music as well. Got some meandering side quests but a lot of really good ones as well. Could be better polished on the performance side but it’s still a very nice looking game nonetheless.
An solid 9/10 for me.
My FF16 review is up. The down time between big moments and the combat being kind of boring outside the big fights hold it back a bit for me from being a 9... so I gave it a harsh 8.9. Lol
So yeah.
