Eh, it actually had little to do with time spent on it, I spent about 55 hours in the first one, and around 25-30 hours in the second. For comparison's sake, I clocked in well over 120 hours in the multiplayer portion of Uncharted 2, and I still hold ME in a higher regard.
Even with its shortcomings (the first one was a horrible turd in the technical aspect, almost to the point that made you think it was shipped unfinished), I found both of them to be outstanding action RPGs with a background so polished and well fleshed out (with political, religious, economic and technological aspects, among many others) that it could very well be released convincingly as a sci fi novel.

uh, yes? Also that's not my reason. Fallout 3 absorbed a lot of my time, but I wouldn't consider it the best game of this gen. Mass Effect 1 & 2 were the best quality for me in terms of being a polished package. No doubt there are other games I haven't played which might be more deserving of this, but alas I haven't played them
Yeah, I have not touched them yet, but I picked up ME2 based on your enthusiasm for it. I always figured they were KOTOR3 and KOTOR4 (without the licensing).
Back to the topic, I forgot The World Ends With You and Assassin's Creed.
I'll settle on No More Heroes though.

What are my other choices? NMH is the best new IP. Maybe Uncharted, but they are just doing more of the same with better everything. NMH is ploughing new ground.

Just play through ME1 first. Mass Effect is all about story, and ME1 sets things up for ME2.
