At least the art style is looking good!

I'd get it just for the art.

So what's the cause for the sudden apathy towards the game? It still looks good to me, but I've not really been keeping up.

We saw gameplay footage at E3. The concept is beyond awesome but the gameplay looks very simple, here is hoping the 2D levels make up for it.

Ah okay. Yeah, I remember that, but didn't find it too disappointing. I don't mind simple gameplay, though!

For me:

1. Spector saying it'll probably come out on the other consoles, which means watered down Wii version (since they'll be developing with the conversions in mind.

2. Watering down of the art style.

3. Saying they used focus groups to define the game.

http://www.1up.com/news/spector-epic-mickey-ps3-360

In an interview with Atomic Gamer, Spector was asked whether a successful launch on the Wii could lead to a 360 or PS3 port in the future. "Before Move and Kinect I probably would have said no, because the game is built around gesturing," Spector answered. "Now, however, there's no reason technologically why we couldn't. But that decision is really above my pay grade, and no one's asked me for a port.

"Sure, it could happen," Spector went on to clarify -- but don't necessarily take that to mean it will. "I've been a Nintendo fan...well, not as long as I've been a Disney fan (laughs), but a long time, and I've been pretty open about the fact that the Zelda games are some of my favorite of all time," Spector said. "So we're a Wii exclusive and I'm happy about that."

That doesn't sound too definite then. We may end up somehow with a watered down kinect version featuring milo!

Are you serious? How did you deduce this? The game is being developed as a wii exclusive to release in a couple of months. How is it watered down? It's being built for the system.

Like I said, it's being built for the wii with a conversion in mind = compromises.  That is the least of the three reasons I gave for losing interest in the game though.  Mostly it is the artistic compromises.  Had they not shown the early art I would have had no interest, so it's no big loss.  They should not have shown their concept art pre-release -- as most games don't.

Yeah but it's NOT being built for the wii with conversion in mind. It was originally a multiformat game until Disney and Spector agreed they should focus on one platform and that was Wii because of the demographic and the paint mechanic. The game is out in a couple of months, as Spector said, no one has asked for another version, he's not working on another version. There is no other version. The game is custom built for the wii, not watered down in anyway for some hypothetical future HD port. And even in that interview, Spector seems very non-commital and is just hypothesising about the game being "possible" with other control schemes.

At this point it's even more fluffy than Ono's "SFIV could happen on Wii" BS. He even said if sales were good and it was a success they would do a version.

A further point.  Imagine you a re a sculptor and you've been commissioned to make a statue out of clay.  You have the material in mind and set forth to sculpt.  You are then informed of a patron in the next village who has heard that you were making the sculpture and wants you to make a copy for them, but instead of using clay, please use wood.  Then a third patron hears about this and asks that you do the same for them, but they want it made of steel.  This would compromise what you put in motion in clay.  Your clay form would now not be as you originally intended it.

On the other topic, that of art change, I was drawn to this game only because of the story.  That of Oswald the Rabbit, the first creation of Walt, who was sold away to cover debt, coming back in some form to bring down the favored son Mickey.  That is a dark story, one that deserves a matching art style.  Instead, we now have something that looks like Donkey Kong 64 -- because some focus group didn't want Spector to "mess with Mickey".

Fine on both points, they just won't be getting my money.

I feel like I'm talking to a wall here.

NEWS
Epic Mickey was originally for 360/PS3

Spector told ONM: "The reality is that we started Wii development in 2008, but before that we were a PC, PS3, and 360 title."

"It's burned in my brain - Graham Hopper [Disney Interactive boss] pulled me into my office one day and said 'What does it take to deliver on the goals we have for this product? And I said, well, you need enough time and enough money to be competitive. And it'd be awfully nice if we could focus on one platform."

"At that time we were talking about a Wii port and I was begging people - no, we can't just port to the Wii, it's not going to work. It needs to be its own game. A lot of the design ideas just won't work on the Wii, we need to give the Wii its dues. Graham looked at me and said 'What do you think about a Wii exclusive?' And I went 'Holy cow - yeah!'"

Spector even said:

"But that decision is really above my pay grade, and no one's asked me for a port. "

We are 8 weeks away from the games US launch, but you have it set in your head that someone has asked him to make other versions already and that the existing version is somehow being watered down because of it, when that is not the case. So close to crunch time they would be concentrating on making this game the best it can be and then only months later even start thinking on a port after looking at the games commercial success.

Game fails on so many levels, even if they are not taking into consideration the inevitable ports, because Spector is a failure for letting focus groups define the game.  Play testing is fine, defining the artistic direction of your game from a commitee of random people is not.
