The fact is that these figures are guesstimates. We feel that they represent a good indication of how these products have fared on the market, but we do not suggest that they are exact or that our rankings are unimpeachable.

"Just about as good as baseball can get, and will no doubt keep fans happy for many months. Between the franchise, Road To The Show, and online modes, it’s packed with top-notch gameplay that rivals the best
we’ve seen."
- Richard Grisham, GamesRadar.

59. The Incredible Hulk

Take Two
Xbox 360; PS3; DS
1 million
July
Reviews: 85%

"Civilization Revolution's sunny presentation and bountiful depth might not be sufficient to draw legions of newcomers to turn-based strategy, but it easily the single greatest example of the genre ever to grace a console." - Cameron Lewis, Official Xbox Magazine.

57. High School Musical 3

Disney
Multiple Platforms
1 million
October
Reviews: 70%

"They're all just okay rhythm games that have the benefit of featuring the most popular teenagers in the world."
- Jack DeVries, IGN.

56. NBA Live 09

Electronic Arts
Multiple Platforms
1 million
October
Reviews: 78%

"Live 09's made significant strides, particularly in terms of innovation, but like the Houston Rockets exiting in the first round of the NBA Playoffs, it's the same old story here. NBA 2K9 continues to be the dominant basketball title, hands down."
- Todd Zuniga , 1-Up.

55. NBA 2K9

Take Two
Multiple Platforms
1 million
October
Reviews: 84%

"2K seems very comfortable with their winning formula - they've got a game that plays and looks great that improves a little each year. They've succeeded in adding wrinkles that do what should be the #1 goal of anyone who makes sports games: They stay out of the way."
- Kent Bardo, Gaming Age.

54. Dead Space

Electronic Arts
Xbox 360; PS3; PC
1 million
October
Reviews: 89%

"Buy it. Do not think about it, just buy it. The game is simply amazing, the best survival horror game in years and maybe ever. This again proves how great games can be when done by competent developers who have a clear vision and understand how to give gamers the best experience possible."
- Brian Edey, Game Focus.

53. We Ski / Family Ski

Namco Bandai
Wii Exclusive
May
1 million
Reviews: 68%

"We Ski isn't a game that will satiate your need for high-speed thrills, over-the-top stunts, and fierce competition. Rather, it's a relatively sedate game in which you can have fun exploring, taking part in friendly contests, running errands for other skiers, and posing for photos"
- Justin Calvert, GameSpot.

52. Ninja Gaiden 2

Microsoft
Xbox 360 Exclusive
1.1 million
June
Reviews: 82%

"Some things still remain true from the previous games, and while not all of them are positive carry-overs, the end result is a lot of fun to play, despite its technical issues."
- Dustin Chadwell, Gaming Age.

51. Sonic Unleashed

Sega
Multiple Platforms
1.1 million
November
Reviews: 68%

"It's too fiddly and obtuse to appeal to children, and too generic and tacky to cater towards the discerning taste of a gaming adult. The only possible reason you'd have for wanting this game is because it's cheap."
- Martin Gaston, Play.

50. Saints Row 2

THQ
Xbox 360; PS3
1.1 million
October
Reviews: 83%

"Ultimately it’s difficult to see, really, what it adds to the original Saints Row, or indeed, the GTA-formula and the macho posturing and po-faced moral bankruptcy is likely to infuriate as many people as it enthrals."
- Dave McCarthy and Jim Sterling, IGN.

49. Mercenaries 2: World in Flames

Electronic Arts
Multiple Platforms
1.2 million
August
Reviews: 73%

"Mercenaries 2 is a lot of fun if you don't get bogged down by its rough-hewn minutiae and relish the simple pleasures of blowing things up."
- Gabe Graziani, Gamespy.

48. Littlest Pet Shop (Various)

Electronic Arts
Wii and DS
1.2 million
October
Reviews: 70%

"I wouldn't even call this a game by any means. Yes, you can play minigames, but they are all uninspired and mediocre at best."
- Sandro, Fragland.

47. Midnight Club: Los Angeles

Take Two
Xbox 360 and PS3
1.2 million
October
Reviews: 82%

"The cars handle fantastically, the city is nearly perfect, the GPS stuff is awesome and customizing your ride is great. It is way too hard, however, even right from the start."
- Chris Roper, IGN.

46. Prince of Persia

Ubisoft
Xbox 360; PS3; PC
1.2 million
December
Reviews: 85%

"Ubisoft has delivered an incredibly polished, tremendously enjoyable and utterly lovable experience here. It takes all the best elements of previous franchise entries then expands and refines them to create an absolutely unforgettable adventure. It’s magical in every sense of the word."
- Matt Wales, IGN.

45. Deca Sports

Hudsonsoft / Konami
Wii Exclusive
1.2 million
May
Reviews: 54%

"Families seeking their next Wii-Sports fix will have some fun with this $30 budget title, but it hardly has the same polish of Nintendo's groundbreaking title."
- Stephen Woodward, Gamezone.

44. Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII

Square Enix
PSP Exclusive
1.2 million
March
Reviews: 82%

"Often hand-held games feel as shrunken in gameplay as they are in visuals, but Core seems unrestrained by its small screen, with a lengthy story, an interesting weapon-crafting system and e-mails that tell you more about the game’s world and offer you side missions that can be used to build your strength when enemies are too fierce."
- Charles Herold, New York Times.

43. God of War: Chains of Olympus

Sony
PSP Exclusive
1.2 million
March
Reviews: 91%

"Arguably the best PlayStation Portable game to date. There is simply nothing on the console that comes close to its polish, gameplay, and production values. To have a game as epic as God of War in the palm of your hands is absolute bliss. This game alone makes purchasing a PSP worthy."
- Arnold Katayev, PSX Extreme.

42. Burnout Paradise

Electronic Arts
Xbox 360 and PS3
1.3 million
January
Reviews: 89%

"Whether you're careening through desolate urban alleys or rocketing across a rickety railroad trestle, the game looks nearly flawless and runs at a buttery-smooth clip."
- Shane Bettenhausen, 1-Up.

41. LittleBigPlanet

Sony
PlayStation 3 Exclusive
1.3 million
October
Reviews: 95%

"There's really nothing I can say other than this: if you own a PS3 and you don't buy LittleBigPlanet, you are robbing yourself of one of the most unique gaming experiences ever designed."
- Tae K. Kim, GamePro.

40. Animal Crossing: City Folk

Nintendo
Wii Excusive
1.3 million
November
Reviews: 75%

"It is undeniably a well-made and highly polished game that offers all the interesting activities and character the series is known for. On the other hand, it’s almost identical to past titles in the series, with almost nothing in the way of new features."
- Shawn Warren, Nintendojo.

39. Resistance 2

Sony
PlayStation 3 Exclusive
1.3 million
November
Reviews: 87%

"A slightly conflicted, sometimes lacklustre but generally star-struck and - above all - massive first person shooter with a plump online underbelly."
- Edwin Evans-Thirlwell, Kikizo.

38. Devil May Cry 4

Capcom
Xbox 360; PS3; PC
1.4 million
February
Reviews: 84%

"Dismissing the game out of hand is easy: the plot is silly, the standard enemies don't vary much, and the level design amounts to little more than battle venues linked together with bland, featureless corridors and the occasional crap puzzle. But that'd be missing the point completely, and it only takes one hit to see why. Nail an encounter just right, ripping through your enemies with all the ferocity of a tornado in a knife warehouse, and you'll understand."
- Mike Smith, Yahoo Games.

37. Battlefield: Bad Company

Electronic Arts
Xbox 360 and PS3
1.4 million
June
85%

"Seeing as how most military first-person shooters take themselves dead seriously, it's refreshing to see Battlefield: Bad Company's dark sense of humor."
- Robert Workman, GameDaily.

36. Soul Calibur IV

Namco Bandai
Xbox 360 and PS3
1.4 million
July
Reviews: 85%

"Despite the minor step backwards in single player depth, SoulCalibur IV remains a gorgeous, fast-paced, accessible fighter that also has enough depth for expert level play. While online is more of a novelty than a functional feature, players looking for a next-gen upgrade to the on-the-couch weapons clasher of the Dreamcast days will find the same addicting gameplay here."
- Matt Keil, G4TV.

35. Army of Two

Electronic Arts
Xbox 360 and PS3
1.5 million
March
Reviews: 75%

"Like dysfunctional characters in a buddy flick, Army of Two has some annoying problems, but if you just want a fun cooperative experience, it gets the job done and delivers sizeable thrills you won’t find anywhere else."
- Andrew Reiner, Game Informer.

34. Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe

Midway
Xbox 360 and PS3
1.5 million
November
Reviews: 77%

"MK vs. DC isn't the best Mortal Kombat game, not by a country mile, but for the first time in years this series feels relevant and energized."
- Sid Shuman, GamePro.

33. Wii Music

Nintendo
Wii Exclusive
1.5 million
October
Reviews: 63%

"It's not a traditional videogame with challenges and goals, it's an interactive playground. While some gamers will "get it" and have some fun with it, they'll likely abandon it after a little while. Most hard- core gamers will stay far away."
- Chris Kohler, Wired.

32. Kung Fu Panda

Activision Blizzard
Multiple Platforms
1.6 million
June
Reviews: 76%

"A simple, fun and well designed game, Kung Fu Panda doesn't offer the deepest narrative or most though-provoking gameplay for the more mature audiences; it's more of a guilty pleasure."
- Chris Matel, Gamers Hell.

31. Tiger Woods PGA Tour 09

Electronic Arts
Multiple Platforms
1.6 million
August
Reviews: 84%

"A serious contender for the best golf game of all-time and rightly so. There have been no significant leaps in technology, but small steps which year-on-year takes the series forward."
- Rob Rymond, Console Monster.

30. NCAA Football 09

Electronic Arts
Multiple Platforms
1.8 million
July
Reviews: 81%

"Even if NCAA Football 09 doesn’t exactly reinvent college football video games as we know them, it’s the best version yet to grace us this generation. "
- Richard Grisham, GamesRadar.

29. Shaun White Snowboarding (includes Roadtrip)

Ubisoft
Multiple Platforms
1.8 million
November
Reviews: 79%

"It can't reach the heights of SSX or the first and second Amped, but what it lacks in precision, it makes up for in slightly mindless fun."
- Christian Donlan, Eurogamer.

28. WWE Smackdown vs RAW 2009

THQ
Multiple Platforms
2 million
November
Reviews: 80%

"While it’s not yet perfect, Smackdown vs. Raw 2009 is easily the best wrestling game we’ve seen this generation, hands down."
- Nick Chester, Destructoid.

27. Left 4 Dead

Valve
Xbox 360 and PC
2 million
November
Reviews: 85%

"It's knowing you can scream for help and someone will come running that makes this game so compelling. Co-operative play is not just about having people on the same server: it's about sticking together and maintaining communication."
- Craig Pearson, PC Gamer.

26. Fable 2

Microsoft
Xbox 360 Exclusive
2 million
October
Reviews: 89%

"No interactive world has ever felt quite so alive as "Fable 2," where many paths are open, but all choices have consequences. Deep, accessible and endlessly adaptive, it's a boundary-pushing experience that players will still be exploring long after the hype has faded."
- Ben Fritz, Variety.

25. Far Cry 2

Ubisoft
Xbox 360; PS3; PC
2.1 million
October
Reviews: 85%

"After playing Far Cry 2, I'm simply unable to go back to straight and simple first-person shooters. This game has executed my expectations. Would you, could you, go back to games with similar gunfights as this, but along a more rigid axis? I think your own expectations are going to rise dramatically. And I think you really should play this game."
- Tim Edwards, PC Gamer.

24. Spore (includes spin-offs)

Electronic Arts
PC, Mac, DS
2.2 million
September
Reviews: 85%

"Spore isn't as much a deep game as it is a broad one, culling elements from multiple genres and stripping them down to their simplest forms. By themselves, these elements aren't very remarkable; but within the context of a single, sprawling journey, they complement each other nicely and deliver a myriad of delights."
- Kevin VanOrd, GameSpot.

23. Iron Man

Sega
Multiple Platforms
2.3 million
May
Reviews: 47%

"We've come to expect a missing coat of polish on film tie-ins, but Iron Man seems to lack even a level of care, resulting in a drab adaptation that sinks well beyond simple mediocrity."
- Andrew Hayward, 1-Up.

22. Gran Turismo 5: Prologue

Sony
PS3 Excusive
2.3 million
March
Reviews: 80%

"'Classy' and 'video game' usually go together about as well as bottle of Pétrus and pre-sliced American cheese. But every couple of years, the folks at Polyphony Digital pull out their giant, oversized syringe, full of style and affluence, and inject it right into the gaming world’s giant, oversized ass. And for a little while, we all get to feel like we’re living out our virtual caviar dreams."
- Jesse Costantino, Game Revolution.

21. Pokemon (Various Games)

DS Exclusive
2.4 million
April
Reviews: 65%

"Explorers of Darkness does little to deviate from the existing formula. If you experienced Blue Rescue Team then playing this latest episode becomes an increasingly monotonous exercise in 'spot the difference'. Disappointingly, very little has altered here."
- Damien McFerran, PocketGamer.

20. Rock Band 2

Electronic Arts
Xbox 360, Wii, PS3 (some versions launched in Europe 2009)
2.4 million
September
Reviews: 92%

"We’re thrilled that Harmonix didn’t try to fix things that weren’t broken and add in silly things just to add bullet points on the box – the original Rock Band was nearly perfect already. And even if we know the setlist by heart, we still find ourselves running to Rock Band 2 every week and basking in the intoxicating clamor of the in-game crowd’s standing ovations. What can we say? We love living the lives of a bunch of rock stars."
- Alan Kim, GamesRadar.

19. Mario & Sonic at the Olympics

Sega
DS only (Wii version launched in 07)
2.5 million
January
Reviews: 69%

"Winning races as Sonic is far easier than with Bowser."
- Tracy Erickson, PocketGamer.

18. Metal Gear Solid 4

Konami
PS3 Exclusive
2.5 million
June
Reviews: 93%

"It's stupid, it's nonsensical, it's over the top, it's full of awful dialogue, it demands long sittings and it hasn't changed much from the first game ten years ago. But then, it's Metal Gear Solid, so who cares? It's undeniably brilliant, captivating, exciting and downright fantastic, definitely worthy of at least a few furrowed brows throughout the experience."
- Ian Dransfield, Kikizo.

17. Lego Batman

Lucasarts
Multiple Platforms
2.8 million
September
Reviews: 76%

"Full of surprises, humor and an all-star cast of playable characters, it's yet another solid reinvention of an established license."
- Tae K. Kim, GamePro.

16. Rainbow Six Las Vegas 2

Ubisoft
Xbox 360; PS3; PC
3 million
April
Reviews: 82%

"Rainbow Six Vegas 2 is a hell of a package. It’s sort of a shame that so much of it is recycled from the last game, but nobody stops eating their favorite food because it’s similar every time – and this is the Kobe beef of tactical FPS."
- Adam Biessener, Game Informer.

15. Fallout 3

Bethesda
Xbox 360; PS3; PC
3 million
October
Reviews: 92%

"Fallout 3 offers freedom without sacrificing a focused story. It delivers fantastic combat without forgoing a deep role-playing system. The characters you meet are engaging and oftentimes hilarious without feeling out of place in this harsh world. The game has a few flaws -- most of them technical -- but it's a case where the whole is greater than the sum."
- Erik Brudvig, IGN.

14. Need For Speed: Undercover

Electronic Arts
Multiple Platforms
3 million
November
Reviews:  65%

"Unfinished, underdeveloped racing efforts like Need for Speed: Undercover leave the acrid taste of stale engine oil and greasy do-rags in my mouth. Luckily, it’s nothing that a little time spent with Grid or PGR4 can’t wash away. Undercover attempts to return the series to its former glory, but it’s obviously lost that loving feeling."
- Jesse Constantino, Game Revolution.

13. World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King

Activision Blizzard
PC and Mac
3 million
November
Reviews: 93%

"The landscape appears more organic than in the past and new graphical flourishes like real-time shadows add emotional resonance, such as the imposing darkness that covers the player when a dangerous dragon soars overhead."
- Gus Mastrapa, Variety.

12. Lego Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures

LucasArts
Multiple Platforms
4 million (figure does not include bundles)
June
Reviews: 81%

"Simple gameplay is appropriate to the game’s primary target audience, children. But it is notable just how much fun adults can have with it."
- Charles Herold, New York Times.

11. Pro Evolution Soccer 09

Konami
Multiple Platforms
4 million
October
Reviews: 82%

Everyone has a right to demand much more from Konami's increasingly stale series."
- Guy Cocker, Gamespot.

10. Gears of War 2

Microsoft
Xbox 360 Exclusive
4 million
November
Reviews: 94%

"Just when you think Epic has pulled out all the stops - and can't fit any more Corpsers on the screen at once - it'll throw two more at you. Maybe three. And a hundred Locust foot soldiers. And blow up the floor."
- Andy Robinson, CVG.

9. Star Wars: The Force Unleashed

LucasArts
Multiple Platforms
5 million
September
Reviews: 73%

"Who knew that throwing Stormtroopers around like they were rag dolls could be so... boring?"
- Chris Kohler , Wired.

8. FIFA 09

Electronic Arts
Multiple Platforms
5 million
October
Reviews: 88%

"The best addition, though, is undoubtedly the glorious 10-vs.-10 Be A Pro online mode, which lets every participant commit to a single position for the duration. Whether you spoil a drive-by botching a play or score a gamewinning goal in the final seconds, this is the closest a game has ever come to replicating the nervous spotlight of responsibility that defines the stadium experiences of real-life players. You’ll never want to play any other way again."
- Cameron Lewis, Official Xbox Magazine.

7. Madden NFL 09

Electronic Arts
Multiple Platforms
6 million
August
Reviews: 86%

"Visually, an improved graphics engine carries Madden NFL '09, and allows us to forgive EA for shanking the PlayStation 3's Madden 08 last year with its inferior visuals and framerate. Madden NFL 09 is a performer with its spot-on 60 frames per second, 720p resolution, and very clean picture quality."
- Arnold Katayev, PSXExtreme.

6. Call of Duty 5: World at War

Activision Blizzard
Multiple Platforms
7 million
November
Reviews: 85%

"I didn’t want to play another World War II title.  I didn’t want to revisit a theater that has been done to death.  Yhankfully Treyarch’s sophomore effort has changed my mind. Call of Duty: World at War is a fantastic title. "
- Ron Burke, GamingTrend.

5. Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Nintendo
Wii Exclusive
7 Million
March
Reviews: 93%

"There are few games that can illicit a cheer from a crowd of onlookers like Smash Bros. It's something about the insanity of it all, bombs dropping here, flames bursting there, turnips being thrown with reckless abandon. Even if you're on the sidelines, you can help but watch, entranced."
- Russ Frushtick, UGO.

4. Wii Fit

Nintendo
Wii Exclusive
9 Million
April
Reviews: 80%

"With Wii Fit, Nintendo has made exercising enjoyable. Not as enjoyable as eating a giant burger obviously, but it's a good effort."
- Ellie Gibson, Eurogamer.

3. Guitar Hero - Various

(includes World Tour, On Tour, Aerosmith etc.)
Activision Blizzard
10 million
October
Reviews: 85%

"By far and away the best rhythm game available on the market today."
- Neon Kelly, Videogamer.

2. Mario Kart Wii

Nintendo
Wii Exclusive
11 Million
April
Reviews: 82%

"Mario Kart Wii's colossal roster humors fans craving copious unlockables, but Nintendo's clearly scraping the bottom of the Mushroom Kingdom's barrel in an attempt to shoehorn new characters into each successive installment. C'mon, Baby Peach and Baby Daisy? Seriously?"
- Shane Bettenhausen. 1-Up.

1. Grand Theft Auto IV

Take Two
Xbox 360; PS3; PC
13 Million
April
Reviews: 97%

"As Niko becomes mired in the death throes of American organized crime, he begins to become more self-aware. Niko's struggles with his ruthless nature never inhibit the gameplay, but instead enhance the emotional gravity of a brilliant storyline. The more absurd the action becomes, the greater we feel the very real pathos of Niko Bellic."
- Hilary Goldstein, IGN.

So from the list the games that stand out for me are Ninja Gaiden 2, it didn't do that great, but it had bad reviews for the most part. Understandable.

But DMC4, only has 1. 5 million sales across three platforms and it launched in February? Compare that with Resistance 2, a single platform exclusive that launched in November and that game is just shy of the same sales already.

Oh and that Dead Space quote is just....... a bit much.

With the RE franchise leaving the throne vacant by pursuing another horizons, you can't really blame people for receiving Dead Space with arms wide open. Franchises such as Siren and Fatal Frame are never going to be as relevant, part because they will always be niche titles, and part because they lack the skyhigh production values that the RE games (and Dead Spacem now) have.

I like it, its a good game and really well made but that quote evangalised it like crazy. There really aren't that many good survial horror games in the first place for a start and the game has no vision other than copy RE4 and beef up the graphics.

To be honest, sometimes Dead Space feels more like RE5 (meaning a worthy sucessor) than the actual RE5.

Are you trying to depress me? You know if EA DLC-ed Leon Kennedy's head on Issacs body in Dead Space..... ULTIMATE DLC. Grinning

Actually also surprised that Fallout 3 did as well as it did (and that Saints Row 2 did not).

Me too. Force Unleashed, 5 million and rising and then fire the whole team? Gears of War is going to go up. And Iron Man? Crap seeing that sell over some others. I'm a little suprised about Sonic Unleashed, seems a tad lower. I'm interested in seeing this years end sales to see if Animal Crossing indeed has legs. The DS game just blew up in sales so it be interesting to see if it does similar numbers on wii.

I know one soccer mom who bought a DS so she could play AC. She found out about it on a fitness website.  So...  I don't know what that means.  Does that translate to getting a Wii to trandfer her data over at some point... I don't know.  That's a big step.

I think it will 'splode all over the Wii.

Namco must look at their games We Ski (1 mil) and look at SoulCalibur4 (1.4 mil) and say "Well I know what we'll be making from now on".  SC had to have cost tens of millions of dollars to make and market and We Ski what? Five grand on the cover art and manuals? Two grand for development? They probably did not even develop it, it was probably what the programmers made when they were figuring out the Wii Dev Kit.

SC had to have cost tens of millions of dollars to make and market and We Ski what? Five grand on the cover art and manuals? Two grand for development? They probably did not even develop it, it was probably what the programmers made when they were figuring out the Wii Dev Kit.

LOL

 Indeed! LOL

That's disappointing to see Little Big Planet so low.

Go GT5: Demo, though! Grinning

I think that that might have been nintendo's intention when they made City Folk similar to wild world, get handheld users upgrading through data transfer sort of like Pokemon back in the day. It's doing well in Japan, but that's no suprise the DS game sold 5 million. Okay in the US, a million so far.

I think that the first We Ski benefitted from firstly being a budget game and secondly being the only other game other that Wii fit which used the balance board. You have women and men thinking, what else can I use this board for? That said the first was said to be a decent game, 1up gave it an A in their review.

"It's easy to overlook We Ski. Featuring a cast of obnoxiously cheerful anime-inspired characters, it looks silly, simple, and generic in an already crowded library of budget Wii games. But to write it off as any of those (well, maybe it is silly) would be a mistake. "

The second game, We Ski and Snowboard looks good, we have a thread here.

Family Ski 2 : nouveau trailer + screenshots

Soul Calibur 4 was weird. SC2 sold most on gamecube then SC3 was a PS2 exclusive. I don't know, one on one fighters have always been a sort of dying breed to me. But I hear that Mortal Kombat vs DC has sold 1.8 million.

I think you said: "GT5: The $40 Demo". Nyaa

With which I wholeheartedly agree.

Which won't keep me from getting it soon. The real GT5 seems so painfully away now.

There is Skate it on Wii. Type it into our search box. Not sure how it reviewed.

I will wait for Next Generation to do their yearly breakdown of the best selling games of the year, they use NPD, and as many actual game charts to get the estimates. They do a good job. This one looks off, MGS4 is near 4 million, not 2 million.

Opening myself up for revealing myself for the ignoramus I am, isn't Next Generation = EDGE?

I'd happily pay $40 for it.There's actually a reasonable range of cars and tracks. Obviously not 600 but enough to keep you going for awhile. The penalty system is full of shit, though.
