Woah, I know what Punter is, what I wanted to know was what's the deal with the localization. Why would Squeenix localize these games in ocker-english?

Not sure, I thought they would have one english american team and then run it across canada/US/Austrailia/UK

Yeah I am playing the US versions (which undoubtably is the only western version). I thought it was funny that they'd take that tack. I love it incidentally, it makes me smile quite a bit while playing -- I do think of all the people not familiar with Aussie slang and what they must make of it.
So I've played a couple of DQ DS games now, Dragon Slime and DQ4 and they are full of Australian slang and spelling. Not the obvious stuff, but deeper Aussie slang (like calling someone a "punter").
I've googled on this and found nothing. This has to be by request, as it is so obvious, so does anyone know what's going on here?
