What do you guys think?

It's about £65 for a solution. $95 USD

The HD Gaming Pro upscales to 1080p but it outputs via VGA. Most HDTVs have VGA inputs.

The HD Universal series outputs/upscales SD content to 720p HDMI output.

A proper video scaler in amplifier form costs like over £175 for a budget one, anything up to £1000 or more for a professional one.

This is a low budget option. But I wouldn't be willing to pay more.

  - SCART & COMPONENT (Ypbpr) to HDMI
  - AV, S-VIDEO & COMPONENT (Ypbpr) to HDMI

HD Universal Converter will rush the converting market indeed for its comprehensive input sets and advanced capabilities. Both editions are complying with HDCP Standard, and they are able to convert the analogue signals into digital format. We’ve written a logical formula into chipset to transform every two vertical lines to three. That means HD Universal Converter is capable to amplify the signal from 480p to 720p with very little quality loss. In other words, HD Universal Converter is able to enlarge an 852×480dpi image to 1280×720dpi as an original 1280x720dpi picture. The series supports output resolution upto 720p@60Hz. The reason we didn’t upgrade to 1080p was that wouldn’t be affordable for most families, and really no necessary to spend that much money for converting analogue signal to digital format. Developing great products with great price always is our mission. Love simple, and enjoy simple, with HD Universal Converter.

  7. Dual Audio inputs for both game console (any Ypbpr signal source) and computer. The audio single can be switched between computer and game console.
  8. USOE 2.0 (Uniform Scale Output Engine II) supports 1:1 pixel equivalence, offer three screen models for us – full screen, 16:9 and 4:3. Images can be reproduced perfectly on the screen at their original scales without any stretching.

  5. Comprehensive VGA outputs: 640X480, 800x600, 1024x768, 1280X768, 1280x1024, 1440x900, 1400X1050,1600x1200, 1680x1050, 1920x1200 and 1920x1200 RB (specifically for 24” widescreens of Dell and BenQ).

  9. USOE 2.0 (Uniform Scale Output Engine II) supports 1:1 pixel equivalence, offering three screen models – full screen, 16:9 and 4:3. Reproducing images perfectly on the screens without any stretching.
  10. Five pre-set colour models for express adjusting: “Standard”, “Vivid”, “Soft”, “Sharp” and “User”.

If we talk about monitors few years ago, most people would consider it as a part of computer and only for playing PC games, visiting internet or working etc. They more preferred to stick with their televisions for football games.

Then the time turned to the HD age. The generation of HD-DVDs, Blu-ray and new game consoles (PS3 and XBOX360 etc) result in great needs of the HDTVs. To play PS3 on a 40” HDTV certainly is great with the optical impression. However it’s neither good value for money nor for the people live in the university campus.

On the other hand, along with the technological advances, physical size of monitors arrives 24” and even larger. The shapes are selectable as 5:4 or 16:10, and the 1920X1200dpi resolution also indicates the dot-to-dot 1080p HD images now are reachable on the computer screens. In any event, a sumptuous 24” full HD monitor must feast your eyes either for playing games or watching movies. However a monitor equipped with comprehensive set of multimedia inputs (DVI, VGA, HDMI, S-VIDEO, AV and SCART etc) still stays at high price and in fact it hasn’t significant effect in the most cases. Despite the input sets, a screen supports 1:1 pixel equivalence certainly costs you more.

Therefore some converts have been developed with Ypbpr inputs and VGA (D-sub) outputs for playing video games or watching DVDs on the computer monitors. Due to this kind of “bridge” is added between the game console and the display, the final image quality would partly count on the converter’s capabilities. If the converter doesn’t support the 1:1 pixel equivalence, the images might be stretched to fill the full screens as 16:10 or 5:4 shapes. It could be worse if the converter doesn’t support high definition outputs. Despite the former limitation, most existing VGA converters usually have problems of overexposure, distortion and washed-out colours.

Since more and more gamers required a product which can reach the greatest employment of their monitors and game consoles, HD Gaming Pro was developed as a comprehensive converter for full range game consoles.

I'm looking at the online poll on the HD gaming pro device and its like 82% positive, 12 % negative with the rest not knowing what the device is.

Now I'm looking at ebay feedback on the HD Universal converter.

  • Happy with item, exactly as explained
  • Good product thanks
  • great product, fast response to a problem i had that was my equipment a++++++++++
  • works perfectly
  • excellent item thanks
  • Pretty decent converter. Not perfect image quality but an upgrade for sure

Sounds worth a try? I think the important thing is that because it delivers the picture via HDMI it means that I can enable game mode which should eliminate HD gaming lag.

Do it, GG. Take one bullet for the team. I'd love to see some screens of upscaled PS2 games. 60 sterling? Suspiciously affordable.

DO IT.

That's a big bullet to take.

I think the HD Gaming pro which puts consoles into a VGA output, well I dont think it actually upscales, even though it can output 1080p. Seems to be for people wanting to use monitors for gaming. Well I already have my 360 hooked up via VGA and if its going to pixel by pixel put 480p on a screen that is pointless.

So it sounds like the HD Universal Converter is better.

Some things worry me. It's a Chinese company that has expanded and set up a UK branch up north. The Universal converter is the result of "3 months hard work". Three frigging months?

They seem to deconstruct and rip off other peoples technology and make cheaper versions of it.

But some people say it works. Ehhh.

So the good thing about this Universal adaptor is that there are two versions.

Both versions support components.

One version supports SCART in addition which is a european cable similar in quality to component but interlaced.

The other version supports composite cables and S-Video in addition which would be more useful for US gamers with older consoles minus components.

It comes with a UK power adaptor but if it works you could easily buy it and get a power adaptor for your region.

Well the good thing is that if it works you US guys can get one and just buy an adaptor from Radio shack for the power. Otherwise they do ones with all the video sources/cable inputs you guys need.

There seems to be a thread here from someone who has it.

http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=27664&start=0

He has even uploaded comparison pics of how it works on PS2 games vs Component cables alone (on page 2) although I can't seem to download it at the mo.

Here are pics I took comparing Component PS2 cables vs Coosis HDBox. (btw Mushi pics were messed up due to my camera and some bad cables I'm not sure but disregard those for now.

Very quick and brief impressions at first.

Pros
It's working with all the consoles I've used so far
- Saturn (unknown problem)
- PSX
- PS2
- Wii

looks excellent no screen terring or line of doom
Simple plug and play that is it

Cons

There is delay... for many they won't care because it is very minor. For those very very nit picky people it maybe a problem but.... I'll have to research this further.

There is no menu option. It's just plug and play.
Games are all scaled to 720p.

It's as simple as that. You'll use your HDTV to adjust everything else.
It's quit easy and looks really nice.

I've done some lag research with the timer thing. I get 1.1-1.5 frames of lag with the unit. That's about 20mil-seconds I believe. If I'm wrong some one correct me.

Hey you know

My friends and I were playing Guilty Gear XX Accent Core last night and he was kicking my ass told me he didn't notice any delays at all. I guess it was only me because we tested it out on both connections one through the HDBox the other straight to the HDTV.

Not seeing a big difference in that guy's pics. It is a bit smoother and the are a bit colors brighter. All of the pics still look pretty bad, IMO. Some of that could be the camera, though.

Here's a few of that guy's pics. I've resized them down a bit because they are waay too big (files size) to post here, but the difference is still noticable.

He didn't snap a single 3D game shot. They're all 2D games. Sad

Yeah, off-screen caps can be a bit misleading. The one you pointed out is the most impressive, the rest show marginal improvements.
