Game #23 – Final Fight: Double Impact

Publisher: Capcom

Developer: Proper Games

Platforms: PS3/360

As far as retro re-releases go, they're usually pretty standard nowadays. Port the game as best as you can and not do much else. Maybe chuck in an online multiplayer option, a couple of options to enhance the graphics...nothing special. Then you get something like Final Fight: Double Impact – two games in one, and worth every damned penny.

The collection is a port of 1989's Final Fight and 1989's Magic Sword, two decent, if not slightly dated games. Where this collection excels is the options given to you to play either game – both have excellent remixed soundtracks, near perfect online play (with drop in/drop out co-op, which is most excellent), various different visual modes (including a view that attempts to emulate your view of the cabinet) and some great extras. And when I say great, I mean that one of the extras is the Final Fight episode of the 1995 Street Fighter cartoon.

If you're down for some more Final Fight, and want possibly the best version of it, look no further. It sets the standard for future retro releases, and with plenty more on the way, they'd better be something special.

Aww, come on dude. Really is quite the impressive package - and an example how this thing should be done.

Serious question: how does that cabinet emulation mode work out?

Magic Sword was one of my favorite arcade games. I liked that they had so many different character classes to join you. Always seemed really cool.
