You shouldn't. This is one of the justifiably obscure games that GG likes to unearth from the deepest hades pits from time to time. Nyaa

I know, I am just humoring him. Nyaa

Thise is from the guys that made Earth Defense Force 2017?  Then put me down for a copy that game was awesome.  I would write a review for it, but the official gamespot review is what I would have written word for word, particularly this part:

"If this were 1987 instead of 2007, some company like Data East or Irem would have churned this baby out on the NES or Sega Master System as a scrolling or top-down shooter with then-gigantic enemies that blew apart to pixelated messes. Now, fast-forward 20 years, render that same concept in 3D, scale all the creepy-crawly and mechanized enemies up by somewhere around 300-fold, and then don't touch the gameplay mechanics a lick except to throw in an awkward dodge maneuver, and you've got yourself Earth Defense Force 2017.

Of course, the incredible scale of the bugs, buildings, and bots you're blowing up helps alleviate somewhat the sensation that you have no business playing a game that feels this ancient on the Xbox 360, but even with its overly old-school mechanics, Earth Defense Force 2017 is a surprisingly good time--especially for its cheaper-than-average price."

Well, its by the group that did earth defence force which got some good reviews and nintendo's publishing it (have they published anything before with severed limbs and spurting blood?) and it has 4 player co-op online.  Might turn out fun, might be meh.

Assholes.

It's a Nintendo published game with motionplus sword controls fighting off massive bad guys by hacking their limbs off.

Did you watch the videos?

Sandlot are making it, the guys behind Earth Defense Force:

NTSC-uk

No game has gumption like EDF. No other game has the balls to make the most basic enemy an ant the size of a bus. No other game lets the player get away with such wanton collateral damage. No other game has the audacity to throw so much at you and fill the screen with such massive explosions that your neighbours will think aliens really have invaded and will hide in their cellars. The sheer spectacle is a sensory supernova.

There better be a lot of variety in the environments and enemies. I never played the earth defense game but I hope it's not exactly the same gameplay. In that game, besides shooting the bugs and stuff it looks like you could also run through the cityscapes and blow up buildings and the environment. I don't know how you could do that in Reginleiv and to me that seems like a fun side component that would be gone in a game that is pretty thin already on stuff to do. I just would like a little meat in there somewhere.

The enemies look pretty limited so far, I've seen a battle elephant, a flying fortress and several sizes of a standard ogre. However I have seen videos where you could slash parts of the environment, which are descrutible, also there is jumping and 300 weapons. EDF didn't have online co-op either.

I see what you mean though, it could get repetitive. You can level up though.

There are a shedload of new videos on the japanese site including more character videos:

http://www.nintendo.co.jp/wii/rznj/chara/index.html

Just click anything that says new.

I'm getting a little worried about control, I'm hearing and seeing that you use IR for slashing? I thought you used motion plus.

Oh ok - I watched that. Destructible farm fences don't compare to pancaking apartment buildings though. At least it looks like you can take out the trees.  So far it looks like a fantasy shmup but if they do that then I wish it was super fast paced.
Funny how it's a norse myth type thing and the character has a kind of skating glide thing going on...

I really don't like how some of the developers (little king's story, no more heroes, monster hunter) are ignoring the remote functions. It's why I bought the damn thing.

I think the ice skating thing is people playing the demo being impatient and using the dash constantly.

This game though, IR for sword slashing will be more accurate but not as satisfying as real sword slashing. Maybe that is what motionplus does once you enable it?

Tutorial video shows that its IR based.

It almost plays like you would imagine a DS game to work. You are drawing onto the screen to mark your slashes.

Hmmmm.

I want to slash and hack like Red Steel 2 with motionplus. I wonder if motionplus adds an alternate control scheme?

Maybe they were afraid of people having to do tons of repetitive slashing motions and are using ir so you can do small twitches.

It red steel still going the route of the harder you slash the more damage you do. I actually liked that idea. (I'm not a couch lounging game player -  well maybe for endless ocean)

I'd much prefer classic controller support for this kind of game.

I think the game was designed to work with the regular remote and then with motionplus as an add on. If it was designed like RS2 as a motionplus exclusive it might work in a different way.

It's a lot better having accurate control over regular waggle (assuming you dont have motionplus) I guess.

Okay looked at the new videos and it seems my initial impression of turning by moving the cursor at the edge of the screen was wrong. That only happens when using projectile weapons in aiming mode it seems.

You can clearly see that the analogue stick is used for turning and moving. Duckroll at gaf confirms this. Analogue stick for moving, turning. Hold c button to strafe and press c to jump.

Yes, of course. There would be no point in using the WM+ otherwise. The WM+ can track the orientation of the Wiimote even outside sensor bar range. My guess is that it will be used for melee weapons.

I watch some videos. And if you click on the woman next to Sinterklaas you can clearly hear her name Freya. So it is based on Norse mythology and the enemies are probably the arch enemies of the Asgardians, the Giants. The last boss must be Loki or perhaps Fenrir, the giant wolf. They really most localise this. Perhaps they should call it Midgard Defence Force?!
