I'm here to teach. I'm retired from competitive online chess

Why are you retired?

Two reasons. The first is that I was at a point where shorter games (15 minutes an under) weren't worthwhile anymore. I needed to spend more time on that to get anything out of it, but that's too long for online games against random strangers. The second is that winning became too important--I went over 1000 games on Clubhouse Games without a loss (that says something more about the competition, though) and thought more about that than anything else in the game .

Steel, position your King behind Yoda's Queen. Then do the move: Wang 3 to vagina 1.
You won't win but it'll feel good.

Thanks a lot for the analysis, yoda. Is there any online resource where I can read up a bit on common openings and development strategies?

Hmm, that's actually a tricky question. Stuff specifically on opening theory is too high level to be worthwhile at a low level. In terms of tutorials for reading, you're probably best to look at a book. How to Win in the Chess Openings by Horowitz (included in his collection of books, How to Win at Chess) does a very good job. In terms of building skills, the Chessmaster 10 and Chessmaster 11 (Grand Master Edition) have some excellent courses.
I'll put together something myself to get more to the point as well, since I don't simply have a webpage to point you to.
The best thing to do though is to play, and stick to a particular opening. For example, play 1. e4 every time you're white, followed by 2. Nf3 for almost every occasion, then build from there. Do the same as black.
What this does is it forces you to recognize patterns and act preemptively to stop opponent's threats. I basically went from your level to my level in 6 months, and vastly improved openings in about 2-4 weeks. I started with 1. e4 followed by 2. Qf3 (not recommended, BTW). By doing this over and over, there were certain threats I had to stop before they had a chance to occur, such as Bg4 attacking the queen.
I'll have something for you later this week. Until then, it's best to get another game going -- add me to your buddy list so we can challenge each other -- as well as you should play some lower level opponents (I suggest on a different site that isn't correspondence chess, such as Blitz on RedHotPawn, or at Yahoo games).

This goes way back to my beginnings on Clubhouse Games, so you can see some very rough play and how you're not far off.

Java cache most likely. Under Control Panel, find Java and clear cache.

Oh, thanks. Already taking notes.
