I didnt go see Pirates cause I heard it sucked and I have been on a sucky movie streak lately so I needed to see something good. So I finally got to watch Fast Five, fuck yes! That is exactly what I needed. What a great action movie, with amazing action sequences and a killer cast.  The movie uses the heist movie plot so its not all underground street racing, if you have not cared for this series you can still enjoy this movie. Its easily the second best, I still put the first ahead just cause it was so original and trend setting at the time.

I dont think I have ever seen a movie series have such a comeback. After the first the next two sequels sucked balls, then the fourth kind of got back on track and now this one is back to the level of the firs

I just saw Hangover 2, not as good as the first and as you have heard its practically the same movie. Some plot points are predictable, the movie drags a bit but still has some hilarious moments. Go see it if you liked the original.

Loved Wonderfalls. I need to see that too.

I just finished Wonderfalls. The wax lion, lol.

I also watched Dead Like Me: The Complete Series, and enjoyed it as well. It sucks that all three shows that Bryan Fuller created were canceled so early. It also sucks that I knew nothing of these shows until this year! Sad

Saw this.

Actually, suprisingly awesome. Imagine what a teenage girl would do if she could leap through time and correct all the bad luck she's had in life? It's hilarious at times but also dramatic too. I wasn't intending on watching it all in one sitting but it kept me intrigued right to the end of the film and even had a really good plot revelation near the end.

Hollywoods needs to snap this up for a live action remake, it almost reminded me of those Disney movies like the Shaggy Dog.

I'm quoting myself, that's right bitches.

swars01.jpg

Because last night I saw Summer Wars, the new film by the same team that made The Girl Who Leapt Through Time. And it was awesome!

The reason I want to shout about it, is because it's people like US that will understand and appreciate this film more than anyone else. Remember the PSN hack? That's in this movie but the concept is expanded. So this girl gets a friend to pose as her fiance at a family get together over summer. During the course of the stay the boy accidentely hacks into Oz whih is like PS Home only a massive, all encompassing worldwide online system that is like the infrastructure of the world. Unleashed is a demon AI that starts to f*** with everything, traffic lights, weather reports, fake emergeny calls etc.

Eventually it gets its hands on an account which it can use to launch nuclear weapons and it has a 2 hr timer. It comes down to the family working together, both in the real world and virtual world. The film is at times, hilarious, touching, racously entertaining, delightfully whimsical and punch your fist in the air great. The battle is on to recover the stolen online Oz accounts and the ending, well do you remember  the end of Space Channel 5? Grinning

Also, at one point one of the older characters uses a DSi to enter Oz.

summer-wars-girl-bd.jpg

So much fun and I would reccomend buying the double pack bluray of both this film and the Girl Who leapt through time. When Satoshi Kon died I was worried about the state of Non-Ghibli animated movies but these two movies show that others are already there to plug the gaps whilst we wait for Otomo to make his once per decade great film.

Also the music is fantastic fun:

X-Men First Class is maybe the greatest Marvel comic book movie ever made!! Best movie of the year so far. A dream come true for all X-Men fans, I am so pumped, I need to watch some X-Men cartoons. The movie is so well done in all aspects, it avoids all the pitfalls of most comic book movies like really stupid villain plots and strange jumps and convenient loss of powers and crap, it simply delivers a top notch action film with an incredible story. The acting for the most part is superb, Fassbender brings loads of emotion to Magneto, its one of the finest acting jobs in a superhero movie. McAvoy is a pimp, the man is a terrific actor and his Xavier is so fun to watch cause its pre-old man teach Proffesor, this Prof X is trying to bang chicks and chuging beer, its awesome. When you heard Kevin Bacon is playing Sebastian Shaw you probably thought "what?", don't worry he plays it perfectly. They nail the character down, he is deliously evil all the while wearing very expensive clothing. They nail his power perfectly as well, it's not an easy one to convey but they do so in such a manner that its believable. The rest of the Hellfire Club are there to look cool, Emma Frost gets the most screen time but she was basically a walking and talking pair of boobs. The red Nightcrawler was awesome but gets almost no lines. There is a fake storm dude, he doesn't say a word in the movie. They were not the focus, they were there to kick ass as bad guys and they do that.

This is Magneto's movie, I know its called X-Men but the focus is squarely on the relationship between Xavier and Eric and how they end up on two different sides of a war. This film nails the heart of the X-Men conflict as it touches on all the issues the mutants face and how everyones life experiences influences to chose a side. It's emotional and powerful and as an X-Men fan I loved seeing it come to live in film that way. X2 was so great cause it really explored that aspect of the story, in some was X2 handles it better but it has a stronger focus in this film. The main problem is that the movie clearly is bias toward Magneto, it almost presents a one sided argument. You know that Xavier wants to help mankind but you never really see why, nor do the X-Men never get to express why they are doing what they are doing, in X2 they do. On the flip side Magneto gets all the motivation in the world by the end of the film its hard not to be like "damn he has a really good point".

Where this movie really sets itself apart from the other X-Men movies is the action, wow! This is the mutant on mutant comic book style fighting I have been dying to see. I saw X2 a few weeks ago and outside of Wolverine the action segements were so clunky. Singer could never handle superpowers in a large scale way. X3 does a better job but that movie is a complete mess. This movie has that over the top wow factor you expect to see when a bunch of super powered dudes start fighting each other. The action seqeunces are thrilling and filled with great effects that don't seem cheesy (Wolverine movie I am looking at you). I think the Spider-Man films captured the action of Spider-Man perfectly, here I think they finally captured the action of the X-Men comics on film.

But here is the biggest problem with the movie, at least for me, they are working with scraps, with a cast of B-list X-Men and Beast. The students are not the focus of the movie. Yes they get found , get trained in a good old fashion montage and thye form the first X-Men team but it never feels like the movie is about them. The Singer films were about the team and that is why they were so good despite their flaws. This is about Xavier and Magneto and hey look there are a bunch of kids doing cool stuff too! The audience is never given much reason to care about them and only two of them get any real screen time, Beast and Mystique. Honestly Kelsey Grammer Beast was better, maybe its cause he is still a kid in this one that I didn't care for the character much. Does anyone care for Banshee? Havok? I am kind of stunned that the director Matthew Vaughn got such a great movie using these characters. I could only imagine what he would do with the real cast of X-Men, I drool just thinking about it.

I highly recommend the movie to anyone that enjoys comic book movies. You do not need to know anything about the X-Men, this movie creates its own storyline it does not follow the comics at all. It is one of those rare summer movies with a lot of heart, it is not loud and dumb. It is no Batman, those movies are in a different league but its near the top of the next tier. I think I like it more than the first two Spider-Man movies. X2 is very special to me and I am still wondering if this movie surpasses that one. I think overall, removing source content from this mix that First Class is the better movie. But I can't just do that, I am an X-Men fan and a huge Wolverine fan and X2 brought those characters to life. It maybe didn't showcase the action the way I wanted it too but it nailed the characterizations of each of the major X-Men and an X-Men movie should be about X-Men. This is more of a Magneto movie co-starring Xavier, which is still an awesome story to cover but it's not X-Men.

Harry Knowles said FIrst Class had the best use of the word "Fuck" in a PG-13 movie ever, I agree.

Just saw Super 8, MAGICAL. Summer movies like these just don't exist anymore. Full of heart, emotion, story and still has the big epic moments. It is a movie that sucks you in, you could hear a pin drop in that theater. Every scare had everyone jump out of their seat, every funny moment had people laughing, and by the end everyone was clapping. One of the best movie going experiences you can have this year.

I wouldn't put it in the same league as Spielberg's masterpieces but its right under those. To me it was missing one big final moment of action or suspense, something to bring the end to a big dramatic finish, I felt it closed a bit too easy. Also the alien is kind of forgettable and is just a CG cartoon thing, for a movie that captured the 80s movie magic perfectly it would have been great to see practical effects used for parts of the alien.

Go see it if you loved all those awesome kids movies from the 80s you grew up with. The ones that were more than just special effects and things blowing up.

I just saw Green Lantern Emerald Knights, pretty good, better than the First Flight movie. It's a collection of Green Lantern tales that merge together to make a full film. It's more diverse and engaging than Flight flight although there is too much fighting.

I just finished watching the final episode of Lost.

Epic is the word - it was probably the best final episode of a series I have seen other than the last episode of Babylon 5.

Sure there were a few plotholes here and there, but it all worked out in the end. They actually explained most, if not all of the stuff they needed to. The acting was spot on from the characters as usual, the emotional intensity was there as well as the melancholy feeling.

The only thing I can really complain about is the woeful acting of Jacob's mother who was a like a block of talking wood.

I've been watching Lost for about 6 months or more, a few episodes a night and now that it's finally over I feel like I have a hole in my life, I will sorely miss seeing these characters and watching this show. As a series, overall I would say the first series is the weakest and you have to stick with it to finally get to the juicy stuff that happens later on. I would say there are a few ancillarly and even pointless characters - some people are inexplicably killed whilst others trek on regardless.

Well, it's over. Sad

*SPOILERS*

Lost was amazing.  A few characters, like Ecko, were killed because he wanted off the show.  Others, like Nikki and Paolo, were supposed to have bigger storylines, but were universally hated.  Others were killed for the shock effect, like Ana Lucia, though I believe the producers wanted her off the show because of her DUI arrest.

There's also a fifteen minute epilogue that explains the Hurley bird, the drop shipments of food and WALLLTTT!  Yep, everything actually is explained.  Lost is one great show.
