"combat and platforming are the meat and potatoes and they taste delicious. It's the side order of overly-dramatic, uninteresting anime drama that messes with the palate".
"Voice acting is average. Strange inflections on phrases and some emotionality that misses the mark. Creepy music sets the scene well".
"Fairly satisfying plot..."
"When Other M is in its classic groove it plays fantastically, but without fail it'll take a schizophrenic turn that will kill the buzz. It might be an unskippable cutscene that goes five minutes too long, or an uncalled for perspective shift that forces you to shuffle walk, or a 'clue finding scene' where you are held prisoner in a Myst mini-game until you click on a particular polygon."
"...should have been much, much better."

Agnates said:I think many reviewers out there will try to pull the "ZELDA 8.8?!" stunt but we'll see. Of course, it's not like I think the game will be a solid 9 or 10, but it's not like every game rated that deserves it; why do so many reviewers start being "fair" when it comes to Nintendo games and still overhype other shit? I mean, I can see how some of these things could break the pace but on the other hand they aren't absurd, and could add to the variety of the experience. I don't see anything wrong with the investigation scenes, if anything it's a hint of Prime-type scanning/looking in an otherwise different game. I bet you if it had none of this it would be called a repetitive throwback to early 90s game design that should be available for $15 on WiiWare. How many long cut scenes can it have when it's got less than 2 hours of cut scenes spread in an at least 15 hour plus game? Or is it the intro and ending that annoyed, which are traditionally long even in games that otherwise have absolutely no cut scenes? And if the plot is "fairly satisfying" how is it a bad thing to have the occasional scene that exposes more of it? Do people complain about cut scenes in pretty much every other action game out there? What modern high-budget game does almost entirely away with plot these days, even if it focuses on the action? I can't think of any, but they're rated highly and that's never brought up as a negative even if it's the usual steroid-infused bald marine crap. Even the Half-Life series, famous for skipping traditional cut scenes in favor of immersion, has quite a few of them now. He doesn't even mention if the cut scenes are skippable the 2nd time and if there are any replay incentives?
Its one review, calm down. There is no way to form a consensus yet. From videos we cant get much from the full game outside of how it controls and plays. Maybe it is paced badly. For me story complaints are pointless so if that is the main reason for a less score than I don't care. This is coming from a MGS fan, I am an expert on annoying stories that interrupt gameplay.
I know that most of the reviews in the AU edition come from the US one but sometimes (as was the case with Monster Tri, the Aussies do their own reviews.

I said I think we will so I didn't comment on a consensus but on just that thought, and then that one review.

Dvader said:Guy on gaf said it took him 14 hours to complete and he only got 56% of the items. Longer than I expected.
How the heck did he get a early copy?
Anyway, hope that's legit. 14-15 hours ain't bad at all. As long as it wasn't like 8 hours like most shooters on the HD consoles!

This game will be exactly as I predicted, a game that will split reaction will be am 8 range game which is below average for a Metroid game.

So about Metroid Prime 3's quality?
I'm being generous, though.

"Late in the game, once Samus unlocks all of her abilities and begins meeting more familiar faces from the series, I experienced fleeting moments where it all clicked, and I saw glimpses of how great Other M could have been. But an hour or two of less painful gameplay can't make up for the bad design choices at this game's core. It especially can't make up for what Other M has done to Samus as a character. She'll forever be trapped in my mind as a whiny, talkative child who is too willing to give up her freedom and too petulant to be likable. Metroid: Other M is the most disappointing Nintendo release in quite some time and a blemish that isn't likely to be forgotten on an otherwise superb franchise."

"As a Metroid fan, coming down hard on Other M for its faults isn't easy. I was so torn with my initial playthrough impressions that I sat down and played through the game a second time, something I almost never do for review (or for pleasure). It's not that Other M doesn't fit my expectations of what I wanted in a Metroid game, which may be true to some extent. It's simply that, despite a few high points, what's here is a mostly average third-person action/adventure title. Stripped of its references to this beloved franchise, it's likely that most gamers wouldn't give this title a second glance."

"Metroid: Other
M" is an authentic experience that will please many fans of the
series. Unfortunately it is also fundamentally flawed in some
potentially game-killing ways. If you can get past the occasional
frustrations, there's a lot of fun and fan service to be had.
