I'm going completely off the topic here, because I'm not that interested in it, but I wanted to challenge you on this one.

How do you know what is good, bad, average etc... until you try it yourself?  You don't seem like the kind of person content to go along with the conventional wisdom.

The same way the rest people here commenting on complete, entire libraries they also haven't experienced do. Sense that comes from experience and plentiful freely available information. For WiiWare for example this site is pretty good at reviewing most games as they come. Not that I agree with all their scores or anything, but they provide enough information to know if that's the type of game I'd want to explore further, in case it's better than they think, or not. Of course, sometimes you don't even need that much information to be able to tell if something appeals to you (although you'd need more information to know if it's decent, whether it appeals to you or not) or if it's trash. Associating with likeminded people who play games you don't helps too.

YES IT IS. Don't even try to deny that. WiiWare has about 5% good games and 95% pure crap. PSN and XBLA have tons and tons and tons of good stuff, average stuff and yes bad stuff but it is nothing like WiiWare. WiiWare is a dumpster.

Shantae is the only one that really makes the DSiWare shop worthwhile.

While I will agree that DSiWare is rather pathetic overall, Shantae is hardly the only good game on there. In fact, for a fan of puzzle games it's a dream. The Art Style games are all very good and in the case of BoxLife and PictoBits, excellent.  And not all the cellphone game ports are bad. Oregon Trail was fun. Soul of Darkness was good despite being very short. And Zenonia is criminally underrated. It actually compares very well to some of the better adventure GBA games.

Frankly, while I will agree that overall most of the DSi and WiiWare is junk, a lot of it us also very overlooked. In a given week if 5 games are released, at least 1 is usually pretty good. However they're easy to dismiss because there's so little information out about all but the highest profile games, particularly with the DSiWare games. Nintendo really needs to find a better way to spotlight these games.  Sites most of the time won't even do a review, let alone previews or developer interviews. It ends up being very easy to dismiss a game simply because of a bad description or title. We do it all the time, myself included, and end up missing out on a few good games.

Okay.  I guess that's normal, though not for me.  I play pretty much everything, I've found too many hidden gems that other's have trashed.

I've found plenty hidden gems myself, I don't see how what I said excludes that possibility. I didn't say I follow what reviews claim to the letter or anything. Freely available information includes varied sources, from (not just mainstream) news sites to forums that may get me to investigate certain titles further, to checking out thorough gameplay videos (and many, in case the player sucked) and demos if available. I feel that for most games you can make an informed decision and judgement without experiencing them whole nowadays.

Oh look, more -s instead of rational discussion, most likely for grudges from other topics at that.
