Leading up to the release of Resident Evil 5 I plan to do a full series playthrough, I will play all 7 games in the main series (and maybe UC as well since its canon) in order of their release. As I play them I will just throw up whatever thoughts on the game I have. Some of them I have not played in years so I wonder what my reaction will be, maybe I forgot a certain scare, or noticed something for the first time.

So why dont you guys join me. I am doing this on another site as well so this is a copy/paste job, dont worry I will get more personal with you guys if you respond here.

RESIDENT EVIL:

I will be playing the DS version of RE mainly cause it has no load times. I will be playing the original mode obviously. I will play as Jill cause that is my primary character for RE1, I have always loved her side more than Chris, why, cause of a red bearded badass of a man named Barry Burton (I heart Barry).

So the original, no game in this series even comes close to holding such a special place in my heart. Its not my favorite RE game, but its by far the most important to me. This is the game I know by heart, I know the lines, I know every room, every enemy, every scare, everything. Its the game that changed my whole view on gaming, its the reason I am here at a site like this. If I had entered into this series at a later point I doubt I would ever have the same love for this series, its all cause of this one game that I am the fan that I am.

The night I got this game, way back in 96, is seriously one of my best childhood memories, a sleep over with my brother and a friend, we stayed up playing this mindblowing game, something we had never seen before. I will never ever forget it, none of us will forget it, we still talk about that night to this day. This game was so ahead of its time, so groundbreaking. Every time I play this game all those feelings come rushing back

Ok enough about it, time to play it. I will start tomorrow and probably end it tomorrow, I can beat this game rather quickly. I will be back with all sorts of thoughts after I play.

Its only easier cause it has checkpoints every room. RE4 is a much harder game. Imagine if you had to start over at the beginning of each subchapter when you died. Most of you would be cursing the game to hell and back cause its so frustratingly hard.

Ah, maybe first time through. I got really good and hardly ever die after that. Maybe a couple of bosses would be sticking points though.

Same here, dying was far from a regularity.

Sure you get much better but you still die, have you honestly ever finished the game without dying once (no special weapons). I highly doubt that. On the other hand old RE games, I can do it all the time, its actually really simple, carry health and ammo and you are good.

The old RE games were meant to be beaten without dying, that was some of the requirements to get the best ranks. RE4 will kill you cause the enemies are a lot harder and cause it takes combat skill to get around. it doesn't matter how much health or ammo you have, some enemies or situations will mess you up in RE4 cause its an actual challenge.

I've finished it on Normal several times without dying.

I've only played through it once, but after a certain point (Ie. when I got used to the game) I honestly can't remember dying, except on a boss or two. If I played through it again I could probably do it.

Yeah but a game is easier if it does allow for generous checkpoints and infinite continues right? So RE4 is easier?

The older games are harder because of the fixed perspective and tank like controls.

You're  better than me. I haven't finished a single one of the Resident evil games.

Maybe I should go reinstall RE3...

All games RE games offer infinite continues in a way, when you save its there forever.

The point is which games take more skill, which one has more danger of dying, there is absolutly no question that its RE4.  Its so funny to see the ways different gamers view this cause you get into what some believe to be difficulty. I guess some find item management hard, or the maze like progression of older games to be more challenging on a puzzle like basis which it is. But actually getting through the games are a piece of cake as long as you have the equipment, no enemies in the old RE games really put up a challenge. On the other hand, you can have a ton of items stockpiled and if you are not careful you will die cause the enemies in RE4 are actually difficult, they actually offer a challenge.

Can you get by RE4 without dying, I'm sure you can but you have to be very careful to do it. I play the game recklessly, part of that is cause I do have instant checkpoints everywhere, I kind of like dying so that I can replay the same section and do it a different way. RE4 keeps me on my toes a hell of a lot more than any of the previous 6 RE games. For instance I have never went into a room in any of the old RE games and been like "damn that room with the hunters is too hard to get through", no you just bring the proper gun and ammo and you can kill them in two shots without them ever getting close. Now in RE4 I can think of many rooms where its like "oh crap, its the room with the two garradors, this is going to be hell" (holy crap that room caused me so many deaths the first time I played). Or that grand hall when you first enter the castle, enemies come from every where and you have to protect Ashley all the while, no places to hide cause all areas are open from two directions. Or the damn helicopter section, with those enemies on the turrets, if you are not careful one clean shot of that could kill you. RE4 is filled with tough sections, the only difficult aspect of any of the previous RE games was maybe the final boss, and that is only if you did a horrible job of stockpiling items, which I dont, every time I finish a RE game I have so much health and ammo I dont know what to do with it.

BTW if we count Outbreak games than its no question, the Outbreak games are above and beyond the hardest RE games out there.
