Tomb Raider Legend was the major reinvention for the franchise. I played the games out of order, I played Underworld last year before playing Legend so I had already experienced the change in controls. I still found Legend to be a great game with some interesting diverse locations and great platforming. Lara controls like a dream in the game, I must hand it to Crystal Dynamics cause they nailed the jumping/climbing combo that so many games use now, like Uncharted. Unlike Uncharted this game doesn't feel like it has an auto jump, the player always feels in full control of Lara. The game is at its best when you are traversing trap filled caves, hanging on rock walls above a bottomless pit, or even jumping around high rise buildings. The sheer variety of locations kept me glued to the game as I always wondered where I will be next. It wasn't endless tombs, nor did it feel like the game shouldn't be called Tomb Raider, it had a perfect balance of both. As always there is action to break up the jumping bits and in this game its as basic as it gets. You auto lock on and jump around like a crazy gun shooting gymnast, I guess that is what Lara Croft is. The only time the action is interesting is during boss fights which are usually pattern bosses, the gunplay is secondary to solving some type of environmental puzzle. Obviously this is a major weak point of the game but it didn't get in the way of my enjoyment at all. I found this game to be more focused than Underworld. I remember having certain issues with the game some technical. Underworld is longer and has better puzzles but I feel this is better game. I found Legend to be an exciting game from start to finish. The story is complete nonsense, I am glad they are scrapping this whole mythology and starting over. There are plenty of hidden artifacts to find in the levels, seriously hidden ones, I have no clue where to look. There is an option where you may explore the Croft mansion and inside are a locked rooms that open was you explore. The mansion itself becomes a puzzle filled, platforming testing level. It is a great game that really makes me want to play what most consider to be the best of this new kind of Tomb Raider game, Anniversary. |

Anniversary is a great game too. It's much harder than Legend, and longer too.
I am about 3 hours into Anniversary, which is less forgiving in terms of jumps and camera, so not sure I'll go back in time beyond that in terms of playing Tomb Raider.
The new one, from the limited amount seen so far sounds very interesting though
