Many credit this game, which was ported from the arcade, as being the genesis of run-and-gun over-the-top basketball video game and while that credit should go to Midway's Arch Rivals, that does not diminish NBA Jam for the Super Nintendo in any way.

The two-on-two game play includes ridiculously long air-time, flame emblazoned dunks, hard fouls, laser guided passes and plenty of traveling. You pick from any of the NBA teams of the time picking from a handful of players on each team. I always play with a real-life duo that I hate -- John Stockton and Karl Malone of the Utah Jazz. Like most team combinations the big-headed versions of Stockton and Malone have a propensity for perfection beyond the three-point line (and dunks from behind the line as well).

The players are large and recognizable on the screen, sound is great as well with a Dick Vitale sound-a-like breaking off exclamations like "boom-lacka-lacka". The game is fast paced, and despite what you may think requires some level of skill to master. Player against a friend is, as always, the best way to play this game, but playing against the computer is more fun that most sports games usually are.

This game has the greatest in-game commentary ever.  I can't do anything related to basketball without hearing it in my head.
