I'll keep this short and sweet. I wanted address all the fence sitters who were wary of buying this game because of its odd appearance or mixed blood development team. STORY Did you buy Metroid games for the story? Really?? The story is okay in a Resident Evilish sort of way. Samus gets some actual character. Some petulant female reviewers have harshly criticised the whole game based on this one point. Lets cut through the bullshit - Samus was a mute - mute is bottom of the ladder when it comes to character. A mute who suddenly gains the ability to speak automatically gains more personality than the still mute character. What really matters is: GAMEPLAY It's metroid. That should really be all I have to say because if you know Metroid you should get what that means instantly. It's Metroid, so it has that metroid game structure and associated power ups, abilities, smooth free running and shooting, first person investigating, scanning, the works. It also has a little Ninja Gaiden there with the frequent and hard-ish boss battles. The game is actually in 3D like Ninja Gaiden, you can move into and out of the screen but the fixed camera and auto aim means that you can play most of it from a side on Super Metroid perspective. CONTROLS They work. They F***ing work. They are fast, response, accurate, fun, intuitive. 1st person to 3rd person view changes are as smooth as butter. There are no complaints here. GRAPHICS Are great. In the first person you can see that the engine isn't nearly as good as the texture detail and quality of Prime 3. The art also isn't as good as the Prime games. But it all looks suitably Metroid-ish, it has some nice character models, effects, lighting, it's a reliable and steady framerate. OVERALL You like Metroid games? Well F***ing buy this. It's Metroid, it's high quality, it's quality is beyond what you would expect of a 3rd party Nintendo mash up. It's quality is that of a canon Metroid game. Sure it could use some better music. But its gameplay and presentation are all there, including a generous and large game map. It has as many areas as the 2D games, only fleshed out in proper 3D. It's polished, well paced, exciting and totally worthy of your time and money. |
