Quite possibly the most beautiful game I have ever played, that is the best thing I can say about Journey. I am not one of those gamers that saw this game as some incredible gaming experience, its fun and interesting but you don't do much of anything. Journey consists of lots of walking across beautiful landscapes. Unlike what I previously believed, that this game would be an open world for you to explore, this game is split into levels which are linear. Each level has some obstacle or theme to it to keep things fresh for all 2 hours the game lasts. Your character can walk and call out, when you call out near a ribbon thing you gain the ability to fly for a short while. This is basically the only gameplay mechanic in the entire game, keep your "fly meter" up so you can get around obstacles. Things get interesting when a co-op partner zaps into your game since when you call out you give your partner some power to fly and they can do the same to you. This basically gives you infinite flight if you time it correctly. None of this is necessary though as the game is designed to make sure one player can get around just fine. And so and maybe a partner go through this stunning, amazing, breathtaking world. There is no challenge, the hardest thing in the entire game is avoiding the gaze of a giant floating dragon like thing. There is nothing that can really be called a puzzle as everything is laid out for you. You will do some platforming across floating stones and you will sort of snowboard your way down giant sand dunes. There are some hidden objects to find and this serves as the bulk of your "exploration". The much discussed co-op is not really as interesting as I thought it would be. The devs made it sound like you would be exploring this vast open world and you may discover others on their own adventure in passing. This is not true. All this game does is simply connect two players in the same level together. If you are online you will have someone join you, there is no surprise to it, the game will always connect you to someone. The other player has nowhere else to go, each level is pretty small so you basically HAVE to work together or at least go in the same direction. That said I still found having a partner make the game feel much more lively. You become attached to this speechless friend you meet and if you get through the whole game together it adds a special touch to the experience. Did I mention how amazingly gorgeous this game is? For as boring as much of the gameplay is I kept wanting to go forward cause I could not wait to see what majestic scene I will encounter next. The graphics are simplistic but the way the lighting bounces off the sand is so impressive. There is one moment where you are sliding down a temple and you can see the sun setting through the windows, I was in awe. You can find much much better games for $15 on PSN but you won't find one as different as Journey. If this "experience" is what you are looking for as a gamer then you will enjoy this game more than me. If you are like me and you are looking for something fun to play this will be a nice two hour diversion but not much more. |

In my more mellow moments this reflects my opinions as well. Id still only give it a 6 at best though.
