When I first played Gears of War my first impression of the third person point of veiw was, 'What a waste of what would have been a perfect first-person shooter'. Then, after adjusting to the duck and cover mechanic and the deliberate pace of the action, my thought was, 'Had this been a first-person shooter it would have been a waste of this game'.

Those expecting a first-person shooter will do well to hold off from making any judgements about this game until you have played it for an hour. 'Run and Gun' is not a strategy that will work all the time, as Gears rewards the player who is able to take in the environment and then make a judgement about the best plan of attack. The pacing of the game is, what one must imagine, closer to that of a combat setting and it is primarily what sets Gears apart from any shooter that came before it.

The graphics of Gears are as masterful as the original mode of play. I was expecting, Chronicles of Riddick-style graphics that are so good they are unrealistic, but to Gears tribute you don't notice the realism of the graphics as much as you notice the detail and beauty of the worlds you explore.

The score, to me, did not live up to the hype that surrounds it, though it is certainly a good complement to the action, giving cues as to how much danger you are in.

Gears is an almost perfect game, the only problem I experienced was that sometimes the cover button was more of a hindrance than a help.

While some find fault with the length I thought that any more would have been too much of a good thing. Because of the varying difficulty levels and branching paths (and beauty) in the game there is enough incentive for replay.

Gears is sure to get only better with age, I look forward to many sequels in the future.
