I got into the PS Now beta and had a chance to try it out, and was blown away at how smooth it all worked. There are 25 games, mostly all terrible ones, all PS3 games. The menu looks sort of like the PS store, at first there are four options on the left bar, stuff like test connection, see games, etc. So i tested connection and it said I will be able to stream the games at the maximum visual quality, woohoo! I have like 10-13MPS on average.
So I went to the menu of games, again looks like the PS store, the square tiles, not the long banner ones. I chose something silly to start with, Pacific Rim the game, it takes you to the checkout screen from the PS Store. You have three options 1 day rental, 7 day and 30 days, all free for the beta. So I pick 30, it makes you check out, accept and then it takes you to a prep screen. It tests your connection then countdowns 15 seconds to start.
Then bam you are in the game. I did not see any proof that I was streaming other than the video quality not being super HD clear (though on this game i couldnt tell cause it is shit.) It starts a new save file, I start up the game and everything is responsive. All controls work as if I am playing it on my console. Pacific Rim is awful so I didn't last long playing it.
The PS button takes you to a specifal Now menu where you can access the PS3 XMB. the only options available are save data to the cloud, trophies and friends list with messaging. If you earn trophies you need to sync from PS Now to your account for it to show up on your system. Save files are created in some special Now cloud, separate from your Plus saved files.
Next I tried Pixeljunk Eden since I have it and wanted to compare. Again super easy to get in and it performed perfectly. Here the video quality was noticable, just a small lack of that clarity of it being a direct signal, colors were slightly muted. Basically it looks like a recorded vid from the PS4, maybe a little better than that. Now when I first loaded up eden it did not access my save. I entered the PS3 xmb and went to save menu, accessed my Plus cloud and transferred my eden file to the Now cloud. Now all my save data was there. Pretty sweet.
I tried some Eat Lead, omg so bad. Such a generic cover shooter, wow. Anyway played great. Next I figured to see how it runs when other things are going on online. So I loaded up Overlord and started to stream the nintendo e3 stuff on my computer. Overlord was the first game where I noticed input lag. It didnt hurt the game since that isnt really an action game but it was noticeable. The visuals stayed solid throughout. Even after stopping the stream the delay continued so it probably had nothing to do with the extra internet usage. Back in the PS4 main menu every game you try gets its own tile for quick access. Not my favorite idea as I have enough on that terrible never ending line of shit, where the hell is the update to organize your menu sony!?!a
Overall it works magically. This will kill redbox and gamefly. Why wait for a game, here you press a button and boom you are in. Old games from other systems, doesn't matter, it all plays just fine. And I dont have a super connection, ran beautifully to me. Now when everyone is using it who knows how it holds up but for now it is fantastic.
anyone doing a podcast this weekend?
Stephen Totilo, Kotaku: I can't ask you what's going on with Pikmin, because you've answered that for the last couple of years in a row. I can't ask you what's going on with Star Fox, because you answered that this year. So... what is going on with Metroid?
[everyone laughs]
Shigeru Miyamoto, Nintendo: The original creators of Metroid and the director who was the director of the Metroid Prime games who worked under me when I was producing those both now work for Mr. Takahashi, so you'll have to ask him.
Shinya Takahashi, Nintendo: So it has been a while since we released the last one and we're having discussions internally about what we can do next. So at this point we have two different types of Metroid games. We have the Prime style of Metroid game and we have the more traditional style of Metroid game. We feel that we do need to take care of both of these styles of play. And the hope is that at some point in the near future we'll be able to share something about them.
So .... Two Metroid games and one could be a PRIME????!!!!!!!!!!
Oh God! *faints*
best E3 news!
Metroid could end up a late Wii U swan song title pushing it to unheard of levels of badassness.
Se...if Matt Cassamassina still worked at IGN he would have had that news 3 days ago. Nobody dug out Nintendo news like him. Probably because he was digging it out of Perrin Kaplan's lovebox.
Uhh Nintendo has always done 3D and 2D Metroid. Same with Zelda and Mario. How is this news.
Not since 2010. Plus, this shows that it could be a Metroid Prime game which makes it even more exciting.
Yeah the prime thing is the biggest aspect to take out of this. I dont like it. Prime is over. We need a real 3D third person Metroid.
Oh actualy it never says anything about 3D or 2D. Prime and traditional. They forgot crazy weird Team Ninja, thank god. Traditional please.
I'm only interested in a Birthday Suit Samus Metroid game.
You prefer traditional side scroller over Prime? I prefer the DS version to be the side scroller.
BTW, I think Bayonetta looks about 10 times hotter with short hair. Just sayin'.
No, third person 3D Metroid is what I want. A real one, not that thing we got.
The real news is that there is no Metroid game in the works.
I'd much prefer Metroid to be third-person adventure game like Uncharted and Tomb Raider. I'm sick of FPS-Metroid, and I'm not too keen on sidescrolling Metroid games either.
